  • The Lives of the Jews of Horažd'ovice
The lives of the Jews of Horažd’ovice In Memoriam WESTMINSTER SYNAGOGUE Our community’s visit to Horažďovice confirmed that no brutality or oppression can ever destroy the spirit of humanity. #e inhabitants of that little town not only showed us their respect and love for those who were so cruelly taken from their midst but also that no amount of fear placed into people’s minds and hearts whether it was through fascism or communism can destroy the spark of godly spirit implanted within us. #e preservation of the Horažďovice scroll and the scrolls from other Czech cities is a reminder of our duty to foster their memories both within the Jewish community and outside, to pass it on to our children and to future generations, forming a chain strong enough to always overcome. It also tells us how important it is to respect one another and not allow prejudice to rear its ugly head. #ere has to be tolerance and understanding and our role here, with our friends in Horažďovice and with the world at large, is to ensure that this never ever should happen again. We must be vigilant and never remain silent in the face of danger or where truth is at stake. We owe this duty to all those who have perished in the horrors of the Holocaust and also to those who today, in different parts of the World, suffer because they are seemingly different. Humanity is only one, just as there is One God whose watchword we say twice a day, Hear O Israel the Lord our God the Lord is One.

How to repair the world Electronic copy available at: http://ssrn.com/abstract=2385947 The Assimilation of Tikkun Olam Levi Cooper1 “Tikkun olam” is most commonly heard as a slogan for activism, political involvement, and social justice. The term has had numerous lives, such that its endurance and malleability over time are truly impressive. It has been used as a pliable legislative justification for changing specific laws and as an eschatological ideal that may describe a human process or the divine end. It has had practical implications for some, and mystical connotations for others. In the twentieth century the term tikkun olam has been used in reference to Jewish political involvement, or to argue for abstinence from any political participation whatsoever. More recently it has become a banner, bandied around for almost any value, including energy conservation, recycling, government health care packages, the fight against terrorism, better nutrition, looking after stray animals, and the list goes on. This paper will touch on the main waystations of the term, starting with a brief look at the term’s etymology, and journeying from rabbinic literature to modern times. This whistle stop tour will provide an overview of the vicissitudes of the term tikkun olam, and will demonstrate how it has come to connote a disparate array of values.

O’Neill Professor Anne-Lise François Summer 2018 © 2018 Matthew Stanhope Mewhinney All Rights Reserved Abstract The Lyric Forms of the Literati Mind: Yosa Buson, Ema Saikō, Masaoka Shiki and Natsume Sōseki by Matthew Stanhope Mewhinney Doctor of Philosophy in Japanese Language University of California, Berkeley Professor Alan Tansman, Chair This dissertation examines the transformation of lyric thinking in Japanese literati (bunjin) culture from the eighteenth century to the early twentieth century. I examine four poet- painters associated with the Japanese literati tradition in the Edo (1603-1867) and Meiji (1867- 1912) periods: Yosa Buson (1716-83), Ema Saikō (1787-1861), Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902) and Natsume Sōseki (1867-1916). Each artist fashions a lyric subjectivity constituted by the kinds of blending found in literati painting and poetry. I argue that each artist’s thoughts and feelings emerge in the tensions generated in the process of blending forms, genres, and the ideas (aesthetic, philosophical, social, cultural, and historical) that they carry with them.
