CEU eTD Collection Abstract The purpose of literature in Soviet Central Asia was to integrate its population into the Soviet project. Despite that, the historiography of Soviet Central Asia’s literary experiences is a newly developing branch of study and so far remains limited, while children’s literature in Soviet Central Asia is a practically unstudied field. This thesis looks at the case of Soviet literature in Turkmenistan, specifically at the Soviet endeavor to bring the new reality into Turkmen life through the medium of the newly created Soviet Turkmen children’s literature. The thesis addresses the process of creation of children’s literature in Soviet Turkmenistan from its origins in the early 1930s till the early 1950s. The goal of the thesis is to look at one aspect of how the program of creating Turkmen Soviet children’s literature happened in the Turkmen context of the early Soviet rule and what its literary results represented. -

Like the Soviet Union, Soviet literature was a consciously multinational, multiethnic project. This dissertation approaches Soviet literature in its broadest sense – as a cultural field incorporating texts, institutions, theories, and practices such as writing, editing, reading, canonization, education, performance, and translation. It uses archival materials to analyze how Soviet literary institutions combined Russia’s literary heritage, the doctrine of socialist realism, and nationalities policy to conceptualize the national literatures, a term used to define the literatures of the non-Russian peripheries. It then explores how such conceptions functioned in practice in the early 1930s, in both Moscow and Baku, the capital of Soviet Azerbaijan. Although the debates over national literatures started well before the Revolution, this study focuses on 1932-34 as the period when they crystallized under the leadership of the Union of Soviet Writers. -

TURKIC LITERATURE Culha, Tulay, PhD Course Description The aim of this course is to provide for an outline of the literature of the Turkic language peoples called “Turkish world” with its leading representatives. For the purpose of providing an account of the Turkish world, the fact that Turkic people have lived across a wide geography for centuries should be taken into account and it should be indicated within historical as well as contemporary context and additionally within the context of folk literature bearing the traces of a common culture. Within the context of this evaluation, as the historical and contemporary Turkish literature regarded as the literature of Turkish spoken in Turkey is an independent research subject on its own, it will be excluded from the scope of this course. About the Professor Tülay Çulha currently gives lectures as an associate professor in Modern Turkish Language of the Department of Turkish Language and Literature in Kocaeli University. The area of expertise of Dr. Çulha includes the Turkish World North-West (Kypchak) Turkish language and literature, especially Karaim Turkish and Literature and recently conducts academic research in this field. Nurmuhammed Andalyp (1660-1740) of Garazmazy (in present-day Konye-Urgench) was an innovator of Turkmen oral and written literature. Andalyp’s collection of works serves as a testament of his adroit skill in composing “ ghazal, ruba ci, and mukhammas ”, and dastans, among other literary forms. 1 His achievements and accomplishments as a writer and poet have garnered universal acclaim among Turkmen scholars and thinkers. Although his compositions remain few and far in between (compared to later Turkmen literary figures), they stand as pinnacle representations of fine Turkmen literature. Among his most cherished works are the dastans of “Oguzname”, “Leyla and Mejnun” and “Baba Rovshen”. Based on Andalyp’s literary prowess, Turkmen President, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, distinguished him as one of the few Turkmen exemplars, along with other literary heroes like Magtymguly and Azadi, to whom the Turkmen nation should reverently bow their heads. 2 These words do more than simply call the Turkmens together to honor the spirits of their forefathers, but remind them of the roles these writers had served in morally guiding the people and in awakening national consciousness during a time of conflict and instability. 3 Andalyp’s works, such as “Zeynelarap” and “Baba Rovshen”, through verse and prose, provide lessons on proper ethics and how to conduct oneself towards others while his longer epic, “Oguzname”, instills a sense of national identity and pride that is rare to find among his Turkmen contemporaries. -

Using the example of such works as the heroic epos "Manas", "Kitaby Dede Korkut" of Oguzes, as well as the poems of "Kissa-i Yusuf" by Kul Gali, the works of Turkmen writers Berdy Kerbabaev, Makhtumkuli, Zahir Bigiyev, Shakir Muhammadov, the literary and cultural interrelations of the Turkic peoples are revealed. The Turkmen poet Makhtumkuli is among them. There is information about the distribution of his works among the Tatars in manuscripts, some works were published in pre-revolutionary Tatar publications. The article deals with the history of creation, study, analysis and publication of the poems by Makhtumkuli in Tatar and Turkmen languages. Der Artikel widmet sich der Analyse der Kultur Turkestans in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Das soziale, wirtschaftliche, politische und kulturelle Leben der Mangit-Dynastie in Buchara wird enthüllt. Die Handels- und diplomatischen Beziehungen zwischen Buchara und Russland sind geklärt. Anhand der Arbeiten von Ahmad Donish werden die wirtschaftliche und politische Situation in Buchara sowie die Beziehungen zu den Nachbarländern untersucht. Der Autor beleuchtet das militärisch- bürokratische Kolonialsystem des Zarismus in Turkestan und diskutiert die Faktoren, die zur Geburt nationaler Befreiungskonzepte im Land führten. Anhand von Beispielen wird das Leben Bucharas vor und nach der Invasion des Zarismus analysiert. The article is devoted to the analysis of the culture of Turkestan in the second half of the 19th century. The Mangit dynasty's social, economic, political, and cultural life in Bukhara is revealed. Bukhara and Russia's trade and diplomatic connections have been clarified. On the basis of the works of Ahmad Donish, the economic and political situation in Bukhara, as well as relations with neighboring countries, are studied. The author highlights Turkestan’s military-bureaucratic colonial system of tsarism and discusses the factors that led to the birth of national liberation concepts in the country. -

Email: [email protected] Received: July 10, 2019 Accepted: August 19, 2019 Online Published: September 1, 2019 doi: 10.23918/ijsses.v6i1p171 Abstract: Horyat is a kind of poetry which is passed from one generation to the next and written and told as puns and stanzas. Although it is known with different names in different places in the world, it is called horyat among Iraqi Turkmens by functioning as a media to transfer language and culture. It is not needed to be educated to tell and write horyat. Horyat is a national gratification used to carry language and culture of people from one generation to the next. Generally, it has 4 lines and 7 syllables. There can be change with additional words called “miyan” at the beginning, in the mid or at the end of lines. The aim of it is to point the pun. Horyats are the most important type of Iraqi Turkmen oral folk literature. People who tell horyat are called “horyat çığıran” (horyat yeller), “horyat sazlıyan” (horyat player). This type of folk poetry can be found in different names in Iraq. In this research, we mentioned different variations of horyat in different cultures of Turkish speaking people and ideas of contemporary Turkmen poets and masters of horyat such as Ziyad Akkoyunlu and Ata Terzibasi. -
