Mainland China, Hong Kong (the former British colony), and Taiwan experienced different sociocultural developments under their respective political reigns in the previous hundred years. Different ways of romanizing Chinese names in these areas have come to serve their political ideologies, representing people’s political and cultural identity. It is therefore my best hope that when I romanize individuals’ names, I do so following their personal wishes. With this consideration in mind, I develop the following

    Special Issue Taiwan and Ireland In

    TAIWAN IN COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVE Taiwan in Comparative Perspective is the first scholarly journal based outside Taiwan to contextualize processes of modernization and globalization through interdisciplinary studies of significant issues that use Taiwan as a point of comparison. The primary aim of the Journal is to promote grounded, critical, and contextualized analysis in English of economic, political, societal, and environmental change from a cultural perspective, while locating modern Taiwan in its Asian and global contexts. The history and position of Taiwan make it a particularly interesting location from which to examine the dynamics and interactions of our globalizing world. In addition, the Journal seeks to use the study of Taiwan as a fulcrum for discussing theoretical and methodological questions pertinent not only to the study of Taiwan but to the study of cultures and societies more generally. Thereby the rationale of Taiwan in Comparative Perspective is to act as a forum and catalyst for the development of new theoretical and methodological perspectives generated via critical scrutiny of the particular experience of Taiwan in an increasingly unstable and fragmented world. CHANT In many cultures, chant is used to heighten the delivery of text in religious or ritual contexts. The musical delivery is often received as a more spiritual means of expression than the spoken word. In most cases, chant is exclusively a vocal repertoire (without instrumental accompaniment), and usually consists of a single (‘monophonic’) melody line. Although chant presents many of the attributes associated with secular musical performance—out of context, chant may sound like song—it is often not classed as ‘music’ itself: its purpose is not primarily to provide enjoyment to its listeners, but rather to add weight or ceremony to the (often sacred) words that chant accompanies, and/or to facilitate comprehension or recollection of the ritual. As such, chant is functional, reserved for use in certain ritual activities. The remainder of this entry examines a small selection of the world’s chant traditions, placing them in their historical and cultural contexts, in order to provide insight into some of the various forms and practices in which chant is used. Gregorian chant The most widespread form of plainchant in the Latin Christian West, both in the middle ages and today, is ‘Gregorian’ chant; other medieval repertories included Old Hispanic (see below), Gallican, Old Roman, Beneventan and Ambrosian chant. The name ‘Gregorian’ is misleading and stems from the once-held belief that the repertory was composed by Pope Gregory I (590-604). It is now widely accepted that ‘Gregorian’ chant cannot be traced back to Gregory I (sources contemporary to the pope provide no evidence for his involvement in composing chant or arranging the liturgy—‘liturgy’ being the regular, formal, communal acts of worship, rather than private devotion), but instead emerged in the eighth century in the Carolingian empire.
