In our research, we aim to predict attributes of human play- ers based on observations of their gameplay. If such predictions can be made with sufficient accuracy, games can use them to automatically adapt to the player’s needs. In previous research, however, no conven- tional classification techniques have been able to achieve accuracies of sufficient height for this purpose. In the present paper, we aim to find out if deep learning networks can be used to build accurate classifiers for gameplay behaviours. We compare a deep learning network with logistic regression and random forests, to predict the platform used by Battle- field 4 players, their nationality and their gaming culture. We find that deep learning networks provide significantly higher accuracies and supe- rior generalization when compared to the more conventional techniques for some of these tasks. That interest stems partially from the advent of so-called “serious games”, i.e., games used for educational purposes [5]. While most serious games use a “one size fits all” approach to their users, adapting a game to a user’s personality, skills, and needs, has the potential to make the games more effective [10]. Developers have thus shown interest in modeling the characteristics and behaviours of game players [11]. -

“ROFL F*ck You”: Understanding the Current State of Toxicity in Battlefield V By Justin Juvrud Supervisor: Dr Susann Baez Ullberg 2020 Nr 99 2 Abstract: With the birth of “virtual worlds,” created a new space for social norms to evolve and change within a subset community. This thesis focuses on toxicity within the virtual world of EA DICE’s Battlefield V title. The goal of this research is to understand toxicity on a micro scale inside the world of Battlefield V from a gaming anthropological perspective. Along with understanding what toxicity looked like within the virtual world ofBattlefield V, the thesis obtained data for how the community and EA DICE employees perceived toxicity. This research has components of interviews with these members of the communities/staff as well as a netnography of the virtual world of Battlefield V gameplay. Findings and analysis were categorized under the themes of toxic language, power/freedom, virtual world creation, and gender toxicity. Battlefield V toxicity is ever evolving and shaped by player techne (player actions). Player chat consumes the majority of toxicity and therefore diving into toxic language was vital. Understanding the player perspective of power and freedom while gaming was just the first step as the thesis also dove into the developer’s perspective and analyzed the interviews with the backbone of Malaby’s (2009) contingency concepts to see how the developers have a large role to play when it comes to toxicity in games, even if they may not realize it. Just as in the “real world” the virtual world of Battlefield V also had a major theme of gender discrimination winessed and discussed via both community members and staff members of EA DICE. -

The game industry produces many game titles that are similar in terms of mechanics and controls, for example, first person shooter games. This thesis investigates if the differences in sound design matter. Where many first person shooter games are very similar in terms of gameplay, controls and sound design, these sound designs are similar though not identical. With new information on how players use sound when they play games, interesting new games styles, mechanics and kinds of game-play could be explored. This study found that players use the sounds of his or her allies in the game more than any other sound when presented different tasks in games. It was also shown that players use the sound of weapon fire to know where their targets are and when they need to take cover to avoid defeat. Finally it was suggested that loud weapons might impact the perceived difficulty as it might cover the sounds of the various voices. -

Evers Fall Semester 2013 MICRO-TRANSACTIONS AND PLAYER SATISFACTION 2 Abstract Micro-transactions are more frequently used as payment model in online games as compared to other payment models like monthly subscriptions. Although there are some non-empirical thoughts and statements about the consequences of the use of micro-transactions for the satisfaction of users with them, this has not been empirically tested. In three studies using players in different social competitive online games, we found no direct support for the hypothesis that micro-transactions could also be detrimental for the satisfaction of players. More specifically, after players imagined a certain combat scenario in these games, their satisfaction was only influenced by the outcome of the game (loss vs. win), but not by the way the outcome was materialized (bought vs. skill). Thus, in contrast with our predictions, this means that when (other) players had bought an advantage using real money, they did not become less satisfied with the game. As a result, game developers seem to make the right call when they state that the use of micro-transactions will not be detrimental for the satisfaction of their users. This study further discusses the theoretical background, alternative explanations and practical implications of these findings. -
