Welcome Welcome to the eighth annual Friendship Sloop Days. During the spring of 1961, plans were hastily made for a race that was to be a homecoming for Friendship Sloops. Little did we realize that we were grabbing a bear by the tail. With our eighth regatta coming up shortly, we know what enthusiasm and love there is for these boats. Our first year was a one1 day, one race affair, but so many sloops travelled so many miles to join in tht. fun, it was decided in order to make it worthwhile for them to travel so far, three days should be set aside for racing. This has worked out well, and everyone seems happy with the arrangement. Thanks to a competent Race Committee, the race itself has been one of our lesser problems. Accommodating the crowds of people who want to see these boats from shore or watch them race from other boats has been quite an undertaking for a small fishing village of 800 people. Such problems as feed- ing up to 5,000 people, and parking their cars seemed insurmountable, but thanks to the veracity of "many handsJmake light work," the impossible was easily accomplished. DEDICATION is dedicated to the town of Friendship. His dedication to the town is what brought about the sloop races. Other men had the idea but it was Herald who brought it to fruition. None of the existing organizations or committees in the town wanted to tackle such a tremendous undertaking, so almost single-handedly, Herald set up a new organization to promote this tremendous idea. Thus the Friendship Sloop Society was born. The first year was difficult. It was not easy to solicit help because people thought it couldn't be done. Russia’s Empress-Navigator: Transforming Modes of Monarchy During the Reign of Anna Ivanovna, 1730-1740 Jacob Bell University of Illinois 2019 Winner of the James Madison Award for Excellence in Historical Scholarship The eighteenth century was a markedly volatile period in the history of Russia, seeing its development and international emergence as a European-styled empire. In narratives of this time of change, historians tend to view the century in two parts: the reign of Peter I (r. 1682-1725), who purportedly spurred Russia into modernization, and Catherine II (r. 1762-96), the German princess-turned-empress who presided over the culmination of Russia’s transformation. Yet, dismissal of nearly forty years of Russia’s history does a severe disservice to the sovereigns and governments that formed the process of change. Recently, Catherine Evtuhov turned her attention to investigating Russia under the rule of Elizabeth Petrovna (r. 1741-62), bolstering the conversation with a greater perspective of one of these “forgotten reigns,” but Elizabeth owed much to her post-Petrine predecessors. Specifically, Empress Anna Ivanovna (r. 1730-40) remains one of the most overlooked and underappreciated sovereigns of the interim between the “Greats.”1 Anna Ivanovna was born on February 7, 1693, the daughter of Praskovia Saltykova and Ivan V Alekseyvich (r. 1682-96), the son of Tsar Aleksey Mikhailovich (r. 1645-1676). When Anna was 1 Anna’s patronymic is also transliterated as Anna Ioannovna. I elected to use “Ivanovna” to closer resemble modern Russian. CHAPTER 4 Early Yachts IN THE R.V.Y.C. FROM 1903 TO ABOUT 1933 The following list of the first sail yachts in the Club cannot be said to be complete, nevertheless it provides a record of the better known vessels and was compiled from newspaper files of The Province, News-Advertiser, The World and The Sun during the first three decades of the Club activities. Vancouver newspapers gave very complete coverage of sailing events in that period when yacht racing commanded wide public interest. ABEGWEIT—32 ft. aux. Columbia River centerboard cruising sloop built at Steveston in 1912 for H. C. Shaw, who joined the Club in 1911. ADANAC-18 ft. sloop designed and built by Horace Stone in 1910. ADDIE—27 ft. open catboat sloop built in 1902 for Bert Austin at Vancouver Shipyard by William Watt, the first yacht constructed at the yard. Addie was in the original R.V.Y.C. fleet. ADELPIII—44 ft. schooner designed by E. B. Schock for Thicke brothers. Built 1912, sailed by the Thicke brothers till 1919 when sold to Bert Austin, who sold it in 1922 to Seattle. AILSA 1-28.5 ft. D class aux. yawl, Mower design. Built 1907 by Bob Granger, originally named Ta-Meri. Subsequent owners included Ron Maitland, Tom Ramsay, Alan Leckie, Bill Ball and N. S. McDonald. AILSA II—22.5 ft. D class aux. yawl built 1911 by Bob Granger. Owners included J. H. Willard and Joe Wilkinson. ALEXANDRA-45 ft. sloop designed for R.V.Y.C. syndicate by William Fyfe of Fairlie, Scotland and built 1907 by Wm.
