Thomas This year’s Kentucky Derby report was in jeopardy. Not because of all that has been going on in the world, but because the uncertainty and overwhelming emotional stress in my personal life had me close to pulling out the white flag. My dearly beloved life-partner Tonia, who had been battling cancer since the summer of 2018, passed away in March. Breast cancer had traveled to her brain, (my father died of brain cancer, also at home, in 2002) and two days after my birthday on October 22, 2020, we were told Tonia had 6 months to live. She passed on March 6th, 2021. Two days after Tonia left us, my mother, who I also am caregiver for, fell and fractured her hip. At the writing of this very sentence my mother is yet in a rehab facility struggling to recover. It goes without saying that as March churned into April, doing our 11th derby report wasn’t high on my list of things to do. But there was something that wasn’t right about not doing our analysis of the contenders. It was a quiet nudge I was unable to ignore. I just couldn’t let the horses run away from me. I began to realize that not doing the report wasn’t an option, I needed the distraction. Horses are my passion and racing is the sport I love.

He won the Curlin Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park in his last start, and an allowance race, also at Gulfstream, before that on Feb. 26 and is trained by two-time Derby-winning trainer Todd Pletcher (Always Dreaming, 2017 and Super Saver, 2010). The Florida Derby has produced more Ken- tucky Derby winners than any other prep race (24) and six Kentucky Derby winners since 2000. Third in the Rem- sen (G2) won by Brooklyn Strong at Aqueduct on Dec. 5 and fifth in the Sam Davis (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs on Feb. 6, Known Agenda looks to be a “getting good at the right time” horse with the addition of blinkers for his last two races. Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. is a plus, even among the world’s best and post one. Known Agenda #2 Like the King, 50-1 Won the Grade 3 Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park in his last race and his first career victory was on turf, so rac- ing on dirt for him is a question mark. In two starts on dirt, he was second in his career debut in July and third against allowance horses at Keeneland in October. Although this is the first Derby starter for trainer Wesley Ward, he has a reputation for his horses performing well on a world stage. He’s also the current consensus pick as top 3-year-old. This Brad Cox-trained colt has done everything right in two 2021 starts. He romped home in the Grade 3 Southwest at Oaklawn Park and then out-fought a game, pace scenario- aided Highly Motivated at Keeneland to win the Grade 2 Blue Grass by a neck. He races a bit off the pace early, but can quickly reach contention when prompted. He has won by as much as four and one-quarter lengths and by as little as a neck. Last September, he broke his maiden first time out going six furlongs at Churchill Downs, so you know he likes the track. Jockey Luis Saez seeks redemption aboard this colt for the disappointment and criticism the rider endured following the disqualification of his mount Maximum Security from first to 17th in the 2019 Kentucky Derby. Trainer Brad Cox won last season’s Eclipse Award as the nation’s top trainer. But Elliott Walden, the president and CEO of WinStar Farm, the co-owners of the horse, told horseracingnation.com that Life Is Good would be "out for a few months." If that turns out to be the case, he will not make the Derby. In the last round of betting in the Derby Future wager, Life Is Good was the 2-1 favorite. The victory gave trainer Bob Baffert his record seventh Kentucky Derby victory and rider John Velazquez his fourth. Baffert broke a tie with Ben Jones for most Derby victories with Saturday’s triumph. His previous wins came with Silver Charm (1997), Real Quiet (1998), War Emblem (2002), Triple Crown winner American Pharoah (2015), Triple Crown winner Justify (2018) and Authentic (2020). Velazquez, who won last year on Authentic had previous wins on Always Dreaming (2017) and Animal Kingdom (2011). Velazquez became the eighth rider to win the Kentucky Oaks and Derby in the same year having piloted Malathaat to victory Friday. The most recent rider to do that was Calvin Borel in 2009. Medina Spirit broke sharply from the gate but favored Essential Quality and second choice Rock Your World bumped shortly after the start eliminating some pace pressure from Velazquez. Medina Spirit led the field through fractions of :23.09, :46.70 and 1:11.21 while under mild pressure from Soup and Sandwich with Mandaloun tracking in third. Cox reported both juveniles came out of their races well and he’s excited about next year with them, although no firm plans have been made yet. “It was a fantastic day,” Cox said. “Both came out of their races really well. So far so good. Both are a little tired, but they have a right to be. They both appear to have bounced out of the races very well. We’ll see how things go moving forward. We don’t have anything picked out as far as races, but we’re looking very forward to coming up with a game plan for next year. These are both horses that have shown us a lot since we picked them up in the spring. It’s a long process getting to a point like this and it’s just a testament to the help, the assistants, the foremen, the exercise riders, the hotwalkers, the grooms, everyone we have in place. I’m just really proud of our staff and really appreciative of the opportunities owners have given us with really nice horses.
