HOT PICKS BELMONT SUPERFECTA Belmont Post Time: 6:49PM #-HORSE trainer JOCKEY 7- ROCK YOUR WORLD JOHN SADLER JOEL ROSARIO He was Hot Picks top selection in the Kentucky Derby, but his day was basically over two steps out of the starting gate. Essential Quality broke outward, Highly Motivated broke inward and Rock Your World got wiped out, losing all chance to compete. If he breaks cleanly, Rock Your World has enough speed to make the lead before the clubhouse turn and take them start to finish like he did in his most impressive Santa Anita Derby score. 6- KNOWN AGENDA TODD PLETCHER IRAD ORTIZ JR. The “value” horse in the Belmont can be excused for his dud in the Derby when, by breaking from post one, he got caught in behind horses and shuffled back to 17th place before the field reached the first turn. Like everyone else in the field, he was unable to make up any ground after that. Trainer Pletcher has had quite a bit of success in the Belmont Stakes, and we expect to see big-time improvement from this well-bred colt. 2- ESSENTIAL QUALITY BRAD COX LUIS SAEZ Last year’s juvenile champion raced wide around both turns in the Derby and, while he failed to pass anyone down the stretch, he didn’t lose any ground either. Even though he was a beaten favorite in the Derby, he starts as the 2-1 morning-line favorite based on his consistency and pedigree. History, however, is against him: Only three 2-year-old champions have won the Belmont since 1978, Affirmed, Easy Goer and American Pharoah, and because of that, we also will take a stand against him. 4- HOT ROD CHARLIE DOUG O’NEILL FLAVIEN PRAT Ran a big race in the Derby and may eventually be placed second if Medina Spirit is disqualified. But the question is, can he stay the Test-of-the-Champion distance if forced to sit off expected leader Rock Your World throughout? He’ll get first run at Rock Your World, but we’re simply not sure that will be enough to win the final Triple Crown jewel. 153 7-6-2-4 21-0616.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Former Southern California-based racing executive Martin Panza survived his first winter in New York. Oh, yeah, and the weather was tough, too. After a difficult Aqueduct winter/spring meet in terms of quality and quantity, Panza hopes for bigger and better things when Belmont Park opens Thursday for its 54-day spring/summer meet, which runs through July 13. “Bigger is better” certainly will be a theme for the meet, highlighted by a beefed-up Belmont Stakes Day program June 7. Already the highlight of any Belmont Park spring/summer meet, Belmont Stakes Day will be must-see viewing, with 10 stakes totaling $7.7 million and a total of 13 races worth $8 million, making it the second-richest day on the North America racing calendar behind only Breeders’ Cup Saturday. In addition to the Belmont Stakes, which got a purse enhancement to $1.5 million, the card will include the $1.25 million Metropolitan Handicap and the $1 million Ogden Phipps, a race that is expected to draw Beholder, Princess of Sylmar, and Close Hatches, the stars of last year’s 3- year-old filly division who have already combined to go 4 for 4 this year. The June 7 card also features the $1 million Manhattan, $750,000 Acorn, $750,000 Just a Game, $500,000 Brooklyn Invitational, and $500,000 Woody Stephens.

Thomas This year’s Kentucky Derby report was in jeopardy. Not because of all that has been going on in the world, but because the uncertainty and overwhelming emotional stress in my personal life had me close to pulling out the white flag. My dearly beloved life-partner Tonia, who had been battling cancer since the summer of 2018, passed away in March. Breast cancer had traveled to her brain, (my father died of brain cancer, also at home, in 2002) and two days after my birthday on October 22, 2020, we were told Tonia had 6 months to live. She passed on March 6th, 2021. Two days after Tonia left us, my mother, who I also am caregiver for, fell and fractured her hip. At the writing of this very sentence my mother is yet in a rehab facility struggling to recover. It goes without saying that as March churned into April, doing our 11th derby report wasn’t high on my list of things to do. But there was something that wasn’t right about not doing our analysis of the contenders. It was a quiet nudge I was unable to ignore. I just couldn’t let the horses run away from me. I began to realize that not doing the report wasn’t an option, I needed the distraction. Horses are my passion and racing is the sport I love.

His son, trainer Marty Jones, said his father had been in hospice care and died of natural causes. He was 76. AHe was an amazing person, first and foremost,@ his son said. AFor me, that=s the most important thing. On top of that, he was a great horse trainer.@ Gary Jones was the son of longtime California-based trainer Farrell Jones and took over his father=s stable upon his retirement in 1975.
