WXXI On-line...... www.wxxi.org project is slated to kick off July 2020 in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Our efforts in disability related stories began 15 years ago, when we partnered with the Al Sigl Community of Agencies to produce Dialogue on Disability, a one-week initiative weaving programming and news coverage focused on disabilities. In the first year Dialogue on Disability reached 30,000 people. As the initiative grew to a yearlong project and earned support from the Golisano Foundation, WXXI added more production and digital platforms to the programming, added film-screening events at the Little Theatre, and a dedicated Inclusion Desk within WXXI’s News department. We’re looking forward to building a more inclusive community by spotlighting people’s different abilities and encouraging dialogue about disability issues across the country. Throughout the year I’ll be sharing more details about this project, so stay tuned. On another note, I’m pleased to report that the staff at CITY Newspaper has moved their offices into our building at 280 State Street and that David Andreatta has started his new position as Editor. We are proud to have David join the talented and committed staff at CITY to help preserve and expand independent local journalism in the Rochester area. We look forward to enhanced coverage of arts and culture, neighborhoods, and important issues facing our community. Add that to the extensive reporting from WXXI and you can see why many are considering ours to be the preeminent news team in the region.

Best regards,

Norm Silverstein [email protected] | @normWXXI 3 Q&A with a WXXI CORPORATE SPONSOR Self-dubbed the Greatest Show & Tell on Earth, MAKER FAIRE is a celebration of the DIY spirit in the heart of Downtown Rochester and a showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness. Saturday November 23rd marks the 6th annual Maker Faire Rochester event. With over one hundred and ffty maker exhibits, you’ll fnd a space to learn new skills and an opportunity to see everything from robots and rockets to fre-blasting trumpets and giant interactive sculptures. Organizer and Co-Chair Dan Schneiderman shares more. Q. How do you find makers in our community? Makers are everywhere! In fact, everyone is a maker! You can fnd them in schools, makerspaces, on stage, in repair shops, on Etsy and Kickstarter, or at home. Anyone who makes, performs, fxes, or takes something apart is a maker. Q. Why is the “Maker Movement” so important today? The Maker Movement impacts everything from economic development (with makers starting and growing their own companies), to healthcare and education initiatives. It allows us to stretch our EVENTS way of creative problem solving. Within the movement, people have become activated to solve both local and global issues. The movement is not about singular tools or technologies, but about creating a whole ecosystem that brings communities together through making. Q. Why is the Maker Faire a particularly important event for kids? Maker Faire feeds their curiosity and helps inspire kids to think creatively. We’ve seen kids learn how to use tools while being exposed to creations they never would have thought of before. It also provides a platform where kids and adults can share their passions and projects at the same level. We’ve had makers as young as seven years old explain how robots work to local retirees. Q. What do you hope Faire-goers take away from the event? Anyone can be a maker and it is never too late to learn a new skill or try to make something crazy. Q. A few of your favorite maker moments from previous faires? A few standouts are seeing people’s reactions to Heavy Meta’s nineteen foot tall fre-breathing dragon parked on Main Street, watching kids learn new skills, and seeing a couch drive down the halls with Mermaid Tory riding next to a few other makers.
