For struggling readers, literate identity is also influenced by the assigning of a label based on a lack of reading skills. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of the interactions between teachers and students within a summer one-to-one tutoring situation on the identity development of students identified as struggling readers. The summer one-to-one tutoring program was part of a master’s level course on assessment and evaluation of reading difficulties at a Midwestern university. A qualitative multi-case study approach was used to collect and analyze data. Data were collected over a 6-month period and included observations of tutoring sessions, interviews of both teachers and students, work samples from teachers and students, transcripts of both in-class and on- line university class discussions, and observations and interviews of the students and their new teachers in the fall. Data analysis included thematic coding and microanalysis and revealed two types of interactions between the teachers and the students: those at the point of difficulty and the asking of questions by the teacher. -

Without these documents, the best investigative reporting in the world could not have produced a book, and the secrets of CIA mind-control work would have remained buried forever, as the men who knew them had always intended. From the documentary base, I was able to expand my knowledge through interviews and readings in the behavioral sciences. Neverthe- less, the final result is not the whole story of the CIA's attack on the mind. Only a few insiders could have written that, and they choose to remain silent. I have done the best I can to make the book as accurate as possible, but I have been hampered by the refusal of most of the principal characters to be interviewed and by the CIA's destruction in 1973 of many of the key docu- ments. -

Together they cover a land mass of 28,400 km². As of 2006, the vast majority of the 552,438 people living on the Solomon Islands are ethnically Melanesian (94.5%) followed by Polynesian (3%) and Micronesian (1.2%). A history of the coconut industry in Solomon Islands is given by Ilala (1989). Since the ethnic tension in 1998, copra and cocoa have been the focus of most international extension and development projects. Moves to introduce high-yielding hybrids were unsuccessful in most cases because of resistance by farmers, poor husbandry and susceptibility to pest, disease and weed infestation. Coconut research has been carried out since 1952 in the Solomon Islands. In 1960 a Joint Coconut Research Scheme was established by the Solomon Island Government and the Levers company, Russell Islands Plantation Estates Ltd, based at Yandina, Central Province. A seed garden for the production of Dwarf x Tall hybrids seednuts was producing up to 240,000 seednuts a year. Sixteen coconut varieties were also conserved at Yandina, until the blaze at the Dodo Creek Research Station in 2000. Levers was the largest single producer and buyer of copra and cocoa in the country (and the largest employer), but the company was declared bankrupt in 2001. -

Nomination form International Memory of the World Register THE MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL, CLAUDE NOBS’ LEGACY (Switzerland) 2012-15 1.0 Summary (max 200 words) « It’s the most important testimonial to the history of music, covering jazz, blues and rock ». These are the words that Quincy Jones pronounced to present the preservation and restoration project of one of the musical monuments from the 20th century, the Montreux Jazz Festival Archives. From Aretha Franklin or Ray Charles to David Bowie or Prince, more than 5,000 hours of concerts have been recorded both in audio and video, since the creation of the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1967, by the visionary Claude Nobs. This collection contains many of the greatest names in middle and mainstream Jazz, including Errol Garner, Count Basie, Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson to Herbie Hancock. Most of them composed great number of improvised jam sessions extremely rare. Miles Davis played his last performance, conducted by Quincy Jones in 1991. Many artists, like Marvin Gaye, recorded their first and only performance for television in Montreux. This collection of “live” music recordings, ranging from 1967-2012, with universal significance and intercultural dimensions has no direct equal in the world. This musical library traces a timeline of stylistic influences from the early styles of jazz to the present day. THE SOUNDS OF LIBERATION: RESISTANCE, CULTURAL RETENTION, AND PROGRESSIVE TRADITIONS FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE IN AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSIC A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Professional Studies by Luqman Muhammad Abdullah May 2009 © 2009 Luqman Muhammad Abdullah ABSTRACT The cultural production of music in the Black community has traditionally operated as much more than a source of entertainment. In fact, my thesis illustrates how progressive traditions for social justice in Black music have acted as a source of agency and a tool for resistance against oppression. This study also explains how the music of African Americans has served as a primary mechanism for disseminating their cultural legacy. I have selected four Black artists who exhibit the aforementioned principles in their musical production. Bernice Johnson Reagon, John Coltrane, Curtis Mayfield and Gil Scott-Heron comprise the talented cadre of musicians that exemplify the progressive Black musical tradition for social justice in their respective genres of gospel, jazz, soul and spoken word. The methods utilized for my study include a socio-historical account of the origins of Black music, an overview of the artists’ careers, and a lyrical analysis of selected songs created by each of the artists. This study will contribute to the body of literature surrounding the progressive roles, functions and utilities of African American music. Department of The University of British Columbia Vancouver 8, Canada ABSTRACT This thesis seeks to identify the philosophical arguments behind William Carlos Williams' constant attack upon accepted patterns of thought, behaviour and art. The first chapter outlines Williams' belief in the necessity of a continual process of renewal in order to prevent traditional approaches to experience from decaying individual perception into unconscious habits of pre• conception. The thesis then debates the possibility and value of pure perception in contrast to preconception, of objectivity in contrast to subjectivity, of the need for artistic impartiality to prevent biassed perception. This line of inquiry develops into a discussion of Williams' doctrine of change as essential to clear perception: Williams'advocation of the new, of the perception of present, local reality is a struggle against the traditional habitual concentration upon the past, the foreign and upon future abstractions.
