THE CRIER The official publication of Epes Randolph Lodge #32 Free and Accepted Masons 3959 E. Mabel Street, Tucson AZ 85712 POB 652 Tucson AZ 85702-0652 www.epesRandolphLodge32.org Editor :Bro Jerry Estruth, [email protected] May 2014 MASTER’S MESSAGE It was a great pleasure to participate in the raising of Bro. Marcos Castro to the Third De- gree on March 26th. Rumor has it from an unnamed former DDGM that Bro. Marcos was im- pressed with the Solemnity of the Proceedings. He has expressed interest in being an officer. Bro. Kenneth Lewis continues to amaze with his ability to learn Ritual at lightning speed and will be completing his proficiency in the 3rd Degree shortly. Quickly thereafter he will be one of our new Stewards. We had 1st Degrees on the 2nd and 16th of April. Bro. Jon Stevens will be presenting his proficiency in the Entered Apprentice Degree shortly and will be Passed to the degree of Fel- lowcraft on the 23rd of April. Bro. Jon plans on joining our line of Officers soon. Education night will follow on the 30th, then Bro. Mike Garland will be Raised to the Third Degree on the 7th of May. Bro. Ahmet Erdemir, our Senior Deacon, will be conferring the 1st Degrees mentioned above. I will then be pursuing the necessary steps to arrange an election with the goal of his moving into the Junior Warden position. He has been doing great work! Bro. Rufus Tamayo, along with doing an excellent job as 3rd Ruffian during the four 3rd Degrees we have already done this year, has agreed to become Junior Deacon; The hope is for Bro. James Loftquist moving to Senior Deacon after Bro. Ahmet moves up. Thanks to all of you for your willingness to be of service. On the 29th of March Bro’s Walter Williams, James Loftquist and Ahmet Erdemir and I attended the Masonic Leadership Academy in Casa Grande. It was an excellent program, de- signed and implemented by our own R.W.Bro. J. Michael Atchley, Senior Grand Warden. One of my take aways from it is having a weekly Discussion group of those interested in learn- ing about Freemasonry who are not in the Fraternity. Another great announcement at the Academy concerned the Master Ritualist Award. Ba- sically it amounts to knowing all 3 lectures and every part in every degree. Wow! We know W.Bro Brian Pilz is already close to this lofty goal. In the future look for Bro. Jim Nicewan- der, who has already learned a Lecture and will be presenting it on April 2nd, and Bro. Ken Lewis, to be potential Master Ritualists from our Lodge (hint hint). We, as a lodge, are moving ahead! Craig P. As members of Epes Randolph lodge no. 32 it would only be fitting we had at least some knowledge of who Epes Randolph was. Since we will be visiting his grave soon, it is even more appropriate. Epes Randolph is an interesting character in Arizona's history and is a good example not only of Freemasonry in the west, but also of the type of individual who helped shape the future of Arizona. Randolph road and what was once and always will be in spirit Randolph Park, are both named after him. But what did he do ? Epes Randolph was born August 16th 1856 the son of Eston Randolph and Sarah Lavina in Lunenberg County, Virginia. His family were claimed descendents of Pocahontas and influential in his state of birth. Randolph was an important figure in the early railroad in the United States. From 1876 to 1885 he loacted sites for rail lines, constructed and maintained them throughout parts of the southern United States and then Mexico. He was married to Eleanor Taylor in January of 1886 while living in Ohio and after becoming very sick with respiratory issues,he took a job in Tucson in 1895 as superintendent for the Southern Pacific Railroad which was headquartered in Tucson and was responsi- ble for Arizona and New Mexico. Along with Levi Manning he helped finance the historic Santa Rita hotel and was a large investor in several banks, railroads and mines in Arizona including the famous King of Arizona mine in Yuma. The "Randolph" lines connected Phoenix and Tucson as well as several outlying communities of southern Arizona. In1901 he resigned to briefly work in Los Angeles for the Los Angeles Railway Company and Pacific Electric Railway Company where he served as Vice President and General Manager. While working in Los Angeles he built over seven hundred miles of electric line, a record setting achievement for the time. In 1905 he was invited to rejoin the Southern Pacific railroad and returned to Tucson. From 1906 to 1907 Epes Randolph while serving as spe- cial assistant to E.H Harriman received a special request from then President Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt also a Mason, requested that the Colorado river be partially rerouted after a massive flood threatened several developments and millions of acres of federal land. Under Epes Randolph's direction rail bridges were constructed across huge crevasses carved out by flood waters allowing rail cars loaded with boulders, clay and rock to be dumped in strategic locations and help reroute the Colorado back to the Gulf of California In his private and Masonic life Epes Randolph was no less successful. Before his death on August 22 1921 of a pulmonary hemorrhage he had spent 20 years as a member of Blue Lodge including time at Tucson #4 of which he was a member and of a Florida lodge where he had been raised. He had recieved the 33rd degree from the Tucson Scottish Rite, was the Vice President of the Scottish Rite Cathe- dral Association, Eminent Grand Commander of Arizona Commandery Knights Templar and was a Potentate of El Zaribah Shrine. He was instrumental in the development of the City of Tucson, and served as Chancellor of the University of Arizona of which he was a large supporter. "Forty-five years I have labored. The laboring man, whoever he may be and however he may labor, with head or hands, has my sincere sympathies and utmost goodwill." - Epes RandolphAllen, Paul L.
