The Social Constmction of a Coilective " Indian" Ethno-Religious Identity in a Context of Ethnic Diversity: A Case Study of an Indo-Caribbean Hindu Temple in Toronto Simboonath Sin& Department of Sociology University of Toronto ABSTRACT The direct face-to-face encounters between Indo-Caribbeans and their estranged ancestral South Asian "cousins" have not only resulted in the gradua1 transformation of the traditionai Indo-Caribbean ethnic identity, but have also created the conditions for the development of a new "Indian" identity in the Canadian diaspora. In this study, 1 have exarnined the consequences of this "meeting-up" and the impact that it has had (or is currently having) on ethnic identification among Indo-Caribbeans. The construction of ethnic identity and culture is the result of both convention and innovation - a diaiectic played out by ethnic goups for reshaping and redefining cthnic self-conceptions and culture. The Hindu mandir exmined in this thesis was characterized by a synchretistic fusion of Indo-Caribbean and South Asian cultural traditions, and this has resulted in the emergence of a new and second diasporic Indo-Caribbean ethnic identity: an identity that takes the form of an iniaginary South Asian Indian identity. For Indo-Caribbeans, the melding together of elements from both the past and present is cmcial for redefining who and what they are and wish to be. This new "Indian" identity is tantamount to the creation of "new ethnicity" or ethnic rediscovery. The idea of trying to reconnect with one's ethnic "roots" is not just simply an aspect of ethnic renewal or ethnic rediscovery, but one that represents a significant instance of constructed ethnicity. As such, this study contributes significantly to our understanding of ethnicity as a socially consmicted phenornenon. This sociological ethnographic case study was located within the Social Constnictionist approach to ethnicity - a theoretical mode1 that ernphasizes the dynamic and fluid nature of ethnic relations. In keeping with the qualitative nature of the case study methodology, this snidy necessitated the utilization of field research. The rich body of ethnographic data derived fiom participant observation and in-depth semi-stmctured interviews contributed to our understanding of inductive theoretical refomulation made possible through the grounded theory approach. All are users of the bbcurdu.com website, and all are part of the global Pakistani diaspora. The term diaspora is used to describe the global dispersion of migrant groups of various kinds. Diasporas are of growing economic, political and cultural significance. In a world where migration, geopolitical dynamics, communication technologies and transport links are continually changing, it is clear that culture and geography no longer map neatly onto one another. Understanding diaspora groups inside and outside its base at Bush House, London, is ever more important for the BBC World Service, too. Diaspora audiences are increasingly influencing the way the BBC conceives and delivers output. For example, over 60% of the weekly users of bbcurdu.com are accessing the site from outside the subcontinent, and this proportion is rising. The same trend has been observed for other BBC language websites. (See BBC World Agenda, September 2008.) The research presented here is based on a unique partnership between BBC World Service Marketing Communication and Audiences (MC&A) and The Open University. The structural imbalances caused by the policy of active intervention in the localities could not be offset by the ’paternalistic* and personalised district administration. In Midnapur, the situation was compounded by the inability of government to secure its traditional political base based on zamindars. Real power in the countryside lay in the hands of petty landlords and intermediaries who consolidated their hold in the economic environment of growing commercialisation in agriculture. This was reinforced by a caste movement of the Mahishyas which injected the district with its own version of 'peasant-pride'.

    Middle Atlantic Review of Latin American Studies, 2020 Vol. 4, No. 2, 174-193 Beyond Créolité and Coolitude, the Indian on the Plantation: Recreolization in the Transoceanic Frame Ananya Jahanara Kabir Kings College London [email protected] This essay explores the ways in which Caribbean artists of Indian heritage memorialize the transformation of Caribbean history, demography, and lifeways through the arrival of their ancestors, and their transformation, in turn, by this new space. Identifying for this purpose an iconic figure that I term “the Indian on the Plantation,” I demonstrate how the influential theories of Caribbean identity-formation that serve as useful starting points for explicating the play of memory and identity that shapes Indo-Caribbean artistic praxis—coolitude (as coined by Mauritian author Khal Torabully) and créolité (as most influentially articulated by the Martinican trio of Jean Barnabé, Patrick Chamoiseau, and Raphaël Confiant)—are nevertheless constrained by certain discursive limitations. Unpacking these limitations, I offer instead evidence from curatorial and quotidian realms in Guadeloupe as a lens through which to assess an emergent artistic practice that cuts across Francophone and Anglophone constituencies to occupy the Caribbean Plantation while privileging signifiers of an Indic heritage. Reading these attempts as examples of decreolization that actually suggest an ongoing and unpredictable recreolization of culture, I situate this apparent paradox within a transoceanic heuristic frame that brings
