Page 2 Riding The Range • Fall 2008 Riding The Range ARHA PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE ARHA Quarterly Newsletter Dear Members, Volume 4 Number 15 2008 ARHA has had a good year. Even with the soaring gas prices and a slow The economy, this tells me that the members are starving for a place to gather and show their horses with fellow horsemen. There are still several events on the calendar; go to the ARHA website (www.americanranchhorse.net) “Events Calendar”, choose an event and attend!

Next issue: THE CHARTERS NEED YOU! I am © challenging those of you who do not belong to a charter….join one. Those of you who belong to a CONTENTS charter….become active in your charter. It is not the ARHA that provides the shows you love to attend. It is the individual charters that make the shows possible. The charter shows enable you to earn points and achieve ARHA Contributing Writers: Mona Prater • Nikki Sutton titles for your horses. But these shows do not happen on their own. It takes ARHA Cartoon Artist Jimmy Shaw Graphic/Design Layout: Erica Keeney more than a handful of people to make it happen. Numerous volunteer hours are spent planning and preparing before a show takes place. Then, on the Page 2………………………………………Jimmy Driver Training Page 3………………………………………..Presidents Message show date, it takes more man hours to make the plan smoothly and Page 4………………………………………….Calendar of Events efficiently. Wisconsin Ranch Horse Association It has been a very busy few months here at WRHA. This char- ter club was formed over a breakfast meeting of eight people back in February of this year. We now have about 50 mem- bers. And our goal is to double that by next year.

Our first fully stationed ARHA show was held on September 28th at 2K Ranch and Cattle Company in Helenville, Wisconsin. I won’t say the show went off without a hitch, but pretty close to it, even the weather cooperated.

Thanks to a generous member, we gave away some gorgeous hi-point awards. GIST trophy buckles for open and youth hi- point and a COPE customized saddle pad for our amateur hi- point winner.

We had 48 horses in attendance, 201 entries, signed up 12 new WRHA members, 15 new ARHA members and 17 new Wisconsin Ranch Horse Association September ARHA horses. Our sponsorship drive was very successful, Show High-Point Winners. South KY Ranch Horse Association In 2004 the first American Ranch Horse Association charter was formed. It was named “South Kentucky Ranch Horse As- sociation”. We are well into our 5th season of having fun, working hard and having more fun.

Our goal from the start was to develop and build our horses to be a competitive ranch horse. Most of all, we wanted a family atmosphere, to have fun and make everyone feel welcome. Our members are very proud of what SKRHA is becoming.

This season we had 3 successful shows. Our April show was headlines with the first Friday night “Reining 101” clinic with Jed Lawrence. The clinic was enjoyed by all. In June, at the World Show, Derf Garner and Billy Bittle a with the Annual Pancake Breakfast. Debbie & Tex Nelson put on a cole hole tournament at the World Show...fun was had by all. Combined with our October 4th & 5th show SKRHA was proud to offer the annual Worm Garner Ranch Horse Chal- lenge. $1250 in cash prizes, buckles and awards were given. 2008 SKRHA Officers Plus on Friday night we had the 4th Annual Scott Stevenson (From left to right) Memorial Freestylin’ Friday Nite. Volunteer Ranch Horse Association Cattle Futurity and Derby Article by Nikki Sutton ● Photos Courtesy by Folster Photography

September 6 and 7, Murfreesboro, Tennessee was gearing up for the Volunteer Ranch Horse Association’s Cattle Futurity. With guaranteed money back in the Futurities and Derbies to the first place horse no matter how many entries, it was a win-win situation.

The show started off with a large group of cutting horses. With four judges to show to the points race was high. One Catalystic Cat, owned by Gary Peevehouse and shown by Ernie Tracy overtook Peppys Butterscotch for first in the All Age Cutting and walked away with 40 points for one class. Peppys Butterscotch, owned and shown by Mike Clark came back in the Derby to prove himself and walked away with $360.00 in winnings. He was followed by One Catalystic Cat with $240.00 in winnings.

Ramsey Goolsby & Ranch Cutting followed with Mike Clark once again showing his talent on a Smooth To Touch cutting horse by winning the Futurity on Royal Sun Peponita owned by Roger Pratt, and coming in second on Peppys Foxy Lady owned by Sherryl Horton. Winnings were $264.00 and $176.00 respectively. Mike also won the Ranch Cutting Derby on Peppys Butterscotch with winnings of $300.00

Ranch Roping followed with Perry Neal wrapping up the Derby on Sonny Dot with winnings of $125.00.

The Working Ranch Horse Derby was a tight race with Mike Clark winning on Peppys Butterscotch with earnings of $200.00. Brandon Sutton riding Indian Soldier for Amy Robinson came in a close second.

The Working Cow Horse Derby brought in a new top horse ridden by Joe Harper for Vicki Black. Pepper Lena Lynx took home $200.00 in winnings.

The Steer Stopping Derby was won by Haidas April Fool ridden by Brandon Sutton for Nikki Sutton with winnings of $125.00. And the Ranch Sorting Derby was won by Jimmy Russell riding Miss Starlights Glo and Mitchell Martin on HL Coyote Ann with winnings of $125.00 each.

Weekend Hi Point winners were Ramsey Goolsby in the Youth, riding Smooth To Touch. Nikki Sutton in Amateur riding Haidas April Fool, and the Hi Point Mike Clark & Peppys Butterscotch Open Horse was Playguns Travalena ridden by Brandon Sutton for Dr. Brad Newman.

For those who didn’t attend, plan on it next year. This show offers the competitor a huge opportunity to gather points while showing in a wonderful atmosphere with others who appreciate the value of a great cow horse. With four of the top cow horse judges, Roger Elder, Billy Prather, George Fluhr and Wayne Whitehead the judging was intense and competitors waited anxiously for the results. Up to 40 points per class were available, and as most competitors know it takes a lot of shows and hauling to get that many points.

A surprising amount of spectators came to watch, and the office staff stayed busy answering questions and giving out information on the events and the American Ranch Horse Association in general. Several new members were signed up, and the feedback was very positive on the show in general. ##
