  • Authenticity in Electronic Dance Music in Serbia at the Turn of the Centuries
The Other by Itself: Authenticity in electronic dance music in Serbia at the turn of the centuries Inaugural dissertation submitted to attain the academic degree of Dr phil., to Department 07 – History and Cultural Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz Irina Maksimović Belgrade Mainz 2016 Supervisor: Co-supervisor: Date of oral examination: May 10th 2017 Abstract Electronic dance music (shortly EDM) in Serbia was an authentic phenomenon of popular culture whose development went hand in hand with a socio-political situation in the country during the 1990s. After the disintegration of Yugoslavia in 1991 to the moment of the official end of communism in 2000, Serbia was experiencing turbulent situations. On one hand, it was one of the most difficult periods in contemporary history of the country. On the other – it was one of the most original. In that period, EDM officially made its entrance upon the stage of popular culture and began shaping the new scene. My explanation sheds light on the fact that a specific space and a particular time allow the authenticity of transposing a certain phenomenon from one context to another. Transposition of worldwide EDM culture in local environment in Serbia resulted in scene development during the 1990s, interesting DJ tracks and live performances. The other authenticity is the concept that led me to research. This concept is mostly inspired by the book “Death of the Image” by philosopher Milorad Belančić, who says that the image today is moved to the level of new screen and digital spaces. The other authenticity offers another interpretation of a work, or an event, while the criterion by which certain phenomena, based on pre-existing material can be noted is to be different, to stand out by their specificity in a new context.

  • Alternate African Reality. Electronic, Electroacoustic and Experimental Music from Africa and the Diaspora
Alternate African Reality, cover for the digital release by Cedrik Fermont, 2020. Alternate African Reality. Electronic, electroacoustic and experimental music from Africa and the diaspora. Introduction and critique. "Always use the word ‘Africa’ or ‘Darkness’ or ‘Safari’ in your title. Subtitles may include the words ‘Zanzibar’, ‘Masai’, ‘Zulu’, ‘Zambezi’, ‘Congo’, ‘Nile’, ‘Big’, ‘Sky’, ‘Shadow’, ‘Drum’, ‘Sun’ or ‘Bygone’. Also useful are words such as ‘Guerrillas’, ‘Timeless’, ‘Primordial’ and ‘Tribal’. Note that ‘People’ means Africans who are not black, while ‘The People’ means black Africans. Never have a picture of a well-adjusted African on the cover of your book, or in it, unless that African has won the Nobel Prize. An AK-47, prominent ribs, naked breasts: use these. If you must include an African, make sure you get one in Masai or Zulu or Dogon dress." – Binyavanga Wainaina (1971-2019). © Binyavanga Wainaina, 2005. Originally published in Granta 92, 2005. Photo taken in the streets of Maputo, Mozambique by Cedrik Fermont, 2018. "Africa – the dark continent of the tyrants, the beautiful girls, the bizarre rituals, the tropical fruits, the pygmies, the guns, the mercenaries, the tribal wars, the unusual diseases, the abject poverty, the sumptuous riches, the widespread executions, the praetorian colonialists, the exotic wildlife - and the music." (extract from the booklet of Extreme Music from Africa (Susan Lawly, 1997). Whether intended as prank, provocation or patronisation or, who knows, all of these at once, producer William Bennett's fake African compilation Extreme Music from Africa perfectly fits the African clichés that Binyavanga Wainaina described in his essay How To Write About Africa : the concept, the cover, the lame references, the stereotypical drawing made by Trevor Brown..

It continues to evolve at a terrifying speed, becoming more powerful and harder than its predecessor, and once again Drumcorps is plunging into unprecedented territory. The elements of hardcore punk overlap with the energies of early Drumcorps grindcore and breakcore, with increased metallic weight and increased brutality, reminiscent of the impact of Drumcorps' debut "Rmx or Die". The craftsmanship of Amen Break and glitch noise is also wonderful, and all the materials are perfectly fused without being buried. While maintaining the complexity of the song composition, it simply delivers the pure power of the song, completing the next-level electronic hardcore punk that only Drumcorps can make. We have released works at a high pace since last year, and all of them are super high-dimensional level, Drumcorps / Aaron Specter, which is a series of masterpieces, but this work is also the best work that greatly exceeds the expectations of fans. .. Dance music of the 1990s largely rejected the simple, jovial, hedonistic approach to body movement that had ruled since James Brown invented funk music in the 1960s. Disco, techno and house had simply imported new technologies (both for rhythm and arrangements) into the paradigm of funk. The 1990s continued that process, but further removing the "joy" of dancing from the beats, and, in fact, replacing it with fits of acute neurosis. One of the most important ideas to come out of Britain was "jungle" or "drum'n'bass", a syncopated, polyrhythmic and frantic variant of house, a fusion of hip-hop and techno that relied on extremely fast drum-machines, epileptic breakbeats and huge bass lines. Precursors of jungle included, in the USA, Bug In The Bassbin (1989), the rhythmic workout of Carl Craig's Innerzone Orchestra, and, in Britain, Perfecto's Baz De Conga (1989). The experiments of Plaid and Meat Beat Manifesto also laid the foundations of jungle. Jungle saw the light in 1992 in London with tracks such as Leakage Trip's Psychotronic, Nebula II's Flatliners and Johnny Jungle's Johnny, followed by Andy C's Valley Of The Shadows (1993) and Ed Rush's Bloodclot Attack (1993), while Omni Trio's Renegade Snares (1993) and especially LTJ Bukem's Music (1993) invented "ambient jungle" (a calmer, introverted version of that hyperkinetic dance music).

  • Arbeit Schickert Schneider
ARBEIT SCHICKERT SCHNEIDER A S S CD / vinyl (+CD) / digital Out: April 29, 2016 Three guitarists, three generations, one album together Günter Schickert, Jochen Arbeit and Dirk Dresselhaus are three renowned Berlin guitarists. They epitomize three generations of experimental musicians: Schickert personifies the Krautrock of the 1970s, Arbeit 1980s post-punk and Dresselhaus the neo-electronica of the late 1990s/2000s period. Their artist approaches may differ on account of their diverse musical backgrounds, yet what they do have in common is a fundamental interest in developing the guitar as a sound object, seeking out unusual structures and harmonies. They now present the results of their explorations and ideas on a joint album. The end product is very much more than just the sum of its parts, due not only to the participants' different musical philosophies, but also through the use of instruments not usually associated with this type of music (e.g. balafon, conch, mbira, electronic drums, modular system). Their joint album concocts a kind of musical magic from a myriad of influences (Krautrock, psychedelic, free jazz, punk, industrial, techno, minimal-electronic and so forth) yet simultaneously transcends them to create a new form of music. Günter Schickert (*1949) has been an active member of the Berlin music scene since 1964. He released two albums in 1974 and 1979 on two legendary Krautrock labels, Brain and Sky Records. Since then he has played in various projects, such as the band Ziguri, and pursued a solo career. Jochen Arbeit (*1961) moved to Berlin in 1980 and joined the “Geniale Dilletanten” art group who mixed punk rock and Dada.

The most infernal atmosphere and beats were packed on Disco Rigido (1989), the debut album by Die Warzau (1). Chicago also benefited by the work of former Killing Joke's drummer Martin Atkins, whose supergroup Pigface (1) interpreted industrial music as a producer's product, not unlike the producer of hip-hop: rhythm and noise form the foundation for a slew of guest vocalists such as Chris Connelly, Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), Nivek Ogre (Skinny Puppy), Mary Byker (Gaye Bykers On Acid) and En Esch (KMFDM) to deliver shocking lyrics on albums such as Fook (1992). From this fertile soil Trent Reznor's Nine Inch Nails (12) were born, and the fate of industrial music changed dramatically. Reznor created a persona that was a cross of Dostoevsky's "demons", Goethe's Werther, Nietzsche's "ueber-mensch", and De Sade's perverts.

  • Techno » Techno
Club Guide » Techno » Techno http://www.clubguide.it/?p=1023 Techno Techno is a form of electronic dance music (EDM) that emerged in Detroit, Michigan, USA during the mid to late 1980s. The first recorded use of the word techno, in reference to a genre of music, was in 1988.Many styles of techno now exist, but Detroit techno is seen as the foundation upon which a number of subgenres have been built. The initial take on techno arose from the melding of Eurocentric synthesizer-based music with various African American styles such as Chicago house, funk, electro, and electric jazz. Added to this was the influence of futuristic and fictional themes that were relevant to life in American late capitalist society: most particularly the book The Third Wave by Alvin Toffler.Pioneering producer Juan Atkins cites Toffler’s phrase “techno rebels” as inspiring him to use the word techno to describe the musical style he helped to create. This unique blend of influences aligns techno with the aesthetic referred to as afrofuturism. To producers such as Derrick May, the transference of spirit from the body to the machine is often a central preoccupation; essentially an expression of technological spirituality. In this manner: “techno dance music defeats what Adorno saw as the alienating effect of mechanisation on the modern consciousness“. Music journalists and fans of techno are generally selective in their use of the term; so a clear distinction can be made between sometimes related but often qualitatively different styles, such as tech house and trance. “Techno” is also commonly confused with generalized descriptors, such as electronic music and dance music.
