As a guitarist, A & R man, engineer, producer, songwriting partner of Otis Redding, Eddie Floyd and a dozen others and founding member of both Booker T. and the MG’s and The Mar-Keys, Cropper was literally involved in virtually every record issued by Stax from the fall of 1961 through year end 1970.Such credits assure Cropper of an honored place in the soul music hall of fame. As co-writer of (Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay, Knock On Wood and In The Midnight Hour, Cropper is in line for immortality. Born on October 21, 1941 on a farm near Dora, Missouri, Steve Cropper moved with his family to Memphis at the age of nine. In Missouri he had been exposed to a wealth of country music and little else. In his adopted home, his thirsty ears amply drank of the fountain of Gospel, R & B and nascent Rock and Roll that thundered over the airwaves of both black and white Memphis radio. Bit by the music bug, Cropper acquired his first mail order guitar at the age of 14. Personal guitar heroes included Tal Farlow, Chuck Berry, Jimmy Reed, Chet Atkins, Lowman Pauling of the Five Royales and Billy Butler of the Bill Doggett band. -
Music and Inter-Generational Experiences of Social Change in South Africa

The research and writing of this project was made financially possible through a generous studentship from the ESRC. I also benefitted from the receipt of a completion grant from the Goldsmiths Anthropology Department. Sophie Day took over my supervision at a difficult point, and has patiently assisted me to see the project through to submission. John Hutnyk’s and Sari Wastel’s early supervision guided the incubation of the project. Frances Pine and David Graeber facilitated an inspiring and supportive writing up group to formulate and test ideas. Keith Hart’s reading of earlier sections always provided critical and pragmatic feedback that drove the work forward. Julian Henriques and Isaak Niehaus’s helpful comments during the first Viva made it possible for this version to take shape. Hugh Macnicol and Ali Clark ensured a smooth administrative journey, if the academic one was a little bumpy. Maia Marie read and commented on drafts in the welcoming space of our writing circle, keeping my creative fires burning during dark times. -
A Comprehensive History of Techno and Finding God in the Music with Ellen Allien
Editorial A Comprehensive History of Techno and Finding God in the Music With Ellen Allien Kian McHugh | August 3, 2020 When my Zoom call with Ellen Allien connects, at last, I feel weeks of anticipation turn to uncontrollable excitement. My fingers, sweaty from nerves, and a poorly brewed Starbucks coffee, type out the instructions on how to get her audio configured. Ellen is lounging in her Ibiza flat where she has painted all of the walls completely black so that when the sun shines through her window, the room glows yellow. The first fully formed thought I could pencil down was that her posture seemed to denote a sincere attention to detail and confidence in comfort that most others lack. For the first 2 minutes of the call, we both instinctively laugh, muted, and unaware that our discussion of Techno would soon gravitate toward, and then find unexpected momentum in… a deep consideration of Techno, God, and religion. “Rap is where you rst heard it… If rap is more an American phenomenon, techno is where it all comes together in Europe as producers and musicians engage in a dialogue of dazzling speed.” – Jon Savage (English writer, broadcaster and music journalist). In Hanif Abdurraqib’s 2019 book, Go Ahead in the Rain: Notes to A Tribe Called Quest, he so beautifully praises “the low end” of a track: “The feeling of something familiar that sits so deep in your chest that you have to hum it out … where the bass and the kick drums exist.” His point rings true across all music that is heavily percussion driven. -

Genres, Stile Und Musikalische Strömungen Populärer Musik in Deutschland
Politizace Ceske Freetekno Subkultury
MASARYKOVA UNIVERZITA FAKULTA SOCIÁLNÍCH STUDIÍ Katedra sociologie POLITIZACE ČESKÉ FREETEKNO SUBKULTURY Diplomová práce Jan Segeš Vedoucí práce: doc. PhDr. Csaba Szaló, Ph.D. UČO: 137526 Obor: Sociologie Imatrikulační ročník: 2009 Brno, 2011 Čestné prohlášení Prohlašuji, ţe jsem diplomovou práci „Politizace české freetekno subkultury“ vypracoval samostatně a pouze s pouţitím pramenů uvedených v seznamu literatury. ................................... V Brně dne 15. května 2011 Jan Segeš Poděkování Děkuji doc. PhDr. Ta je odkrývána díky re-definici subkultury pomocí post- subkulturních teorií, zejména pak Maffesoliho konceptem neotribalismu a teorie dočasné autonomní zóny Hakima Beye. Práce se snaţí odkrýt obě úrovně politizace freetekno subkultury v českém prostředí pomocí analýzy dostupných dokumentů týkajících se teknivalů CzechTek, CzaroTek a pouličního festivalu DIY Karneval. Rozsah práce: základní text + poznámky pod čarou, titulní list, obsah, rejstřík, anotace a seznam literatury je 138 866 znaků. Klíčová slova: freetekno, politizace, dočasná autonomní zóna, DAZ, neo-kmen, neotribalismus, CzechTek, subkultura, post-subkultury ANNOTATION The presented work focuses on the politicization of the freetekno subculture in the Czech Republic. The politicization is perceived in two dimensions. The first dimension is the explicit politicization, which could be represented as the active political participation. -

What's That Sound?
What‘s That Sound? Bittles‘ Magazine | Record Review When I tell you that there is lots of great music coming out this month I am not just saying this because I have been given lots of huge bribes. It is actually true! That is why, this month, the new album reviews will be spread out over two whole weeks instead of the usual one. By JOHN BITTLES And what a line up of fantastic records there is! This week alone we’ve got the raucous rock of Royal Blood, the psychedelic weirdness of The Wytches, the lush house of Roman Flügel, the strange, techno atmospherics of Ital and tons more. So get your ears ready, your headphones on your head, and let us begin. Since I have been obsessed with this record over these last couple of weeks it is only right to start with the gorgeous house stylings of Happiness is Happening by techno legend Roman Flügel. The follow-up to 2011’s excellent Fatty Folders has been a long time coming, yet it is more than worth the wait. With a light house feel the record’s ten tracks touch on ambient, shoegaze, acid and just about every style of music you would care to name. Opener Connecting The Ghost is a beautiful chug of a tune recalling M83 in its spectral majesty. Friendship Song quickly follows, with a laidback italo-style groove that leads us into the first half of the album which is stuffed full of gently chilled delights. The second half is more dancefloor-based, but is every bit as good. -
Music Business in Detroit
October 18, 2013 Music Business in Detroit: Estimating the Size of the Music Industry in the Motor City Prepared by: Anderson Economic Group, LLC Colby Spencer Cesaro, Senior Analyst Alex Rosaen, Senior Consultant Lauren Branneman, Senior Analyst Forward by: Patrick L. Anderson, Principal & CEO Anderson Economic Group, LLC 1555 Watertower Place, Suite 100 East Lansing, Michigan 48823 Tel: (517) 333-6984 Fax: (517) 333-7058 www.AndersonEconomicGroup.com © Anderson Economic Group, LLC, 2013 Permission to reproduce in entirety granted with proper citation. All other rights reserved. Foreword I'm pleased to share with readers of Crain's Detroit Business, as well as with others in the Detroit region, this first-of-its-kind study of the business of music in southeast Michigan. Everyone that grew up in this area knows of the "Motown sound," as well as the heritage of jazz, blues, and rock that has steeped into our culture. Many of us are also aware of the more recent innovations of techno and hip-hop, much of which has roots in Detroit. However, until now there has been no systematic analysis of the business of music in our area. Our Anderson Economic Group consultants have combed census and other business records; examined the geographic pattern of nightclubs and perfor- mance venues; scanned demographic patterns for concentrations of heavy enter- tainment consumers; and even conducted primary research into the days/nights of live music available to metro Detroiters at over two hundred specific bars, taverns, and clubs. What we have assembled is a thorough analysis of an indus- try that has always been important to our culture, but can now also be known for its contributions to our employment and earnings.
