Arbeit Schickert Schneider ARBEIT SCHICKERT SCHNEIDER A S S CD / vinyl (+CD) / digital Out: April 29, 2016 Three guitarists, three generations, one album together Günter Schickert, Jochen Arbeit and Dirk Dresselhaus are three renowned Berlin guitarists. They epitomize three generations of experimental musicians: Schickert personifies the Krautrock of the 1970s, Arbeit 1980s post-punk and Dresselhaus the neo-electronica of the late 1990s/2000s period. Their artist approaches may differ on account of their diverse musical backgrounds, yet what they do have in common is a fundamental interest in developing the guitar as a sound object, seeking out unusual structures and harmonies. They now present the results of their explorations and ideas on a joint album. The end product is very much more than just the sum of its parts, due not only to the participants' different musical philosophies, but also through the use of instruments not usually associated with this type of music (e.g. balafon, conch, mbira, electronic drums, modular system). Their joint album concocts a kind of musical magic from a myriad of influences (Krautrock, psychedelic, free jazz, punk, industrial, techno, minimal-electronic and so forth) yet simultaneously transcends them to create a new form of music. Günter Schickert (*1949) has been an active member of the Berlin music scene since 1964. He released two albums in 1974 and 1979 on two legendary Krautrock labels, Brain and Sky Records. Since then he has played in various projects, such as the band Ziguri, and pursued a solo career. Jochen Arbeit (*1961) moved to Berlin in 1980 and joined the “Geniale Dilletanten” art group who mixed punk rock and Dada. In 1983 he began touring the world with his instrumental rock band Die Haut. He has been a member of Einstürzende Neubauten since 1997 and Automat since 2012. Dirk Dresselhaus (*1970) has been involved in various musical fields since the late 1980s. Between 1989 and 1997 he played and sang in indie/noise rock and pop bands like Locust Fudge and Hip Young Things, before focussing more on electronic music from 1997 onwards, starting up his project Schneider TM. In 1999 Dresselhaus formed the duo Angel together with Ilpo Väisänen. • Cobra Fakir Press Quotes
WHAT THE PRESS HAS SAID ABOUT MIRIODOR COBRA FAKIR CUNEIFORM 2013 “The band is nestled within a Rock in Opposition (R.I.O) stylization that transcends progressive rock... Steeped in experimentalism. ... The band unites hi-tech electronics with acoustic-electric frameworks and colorific layers of sound. They fuse some razzle- dazzle type escapades with zinging odd-metered ostinatos, quirky deviations and regimented patterns. ... "Maringouin," boasts a hummable melody line, driven by a warm electric piano riff... majestic choruses... this piece would serve as the most radio accessible entry on the album. ... A superfine album by this time-honored unit.” [4 stars] - Glenn Astarita, All About Jazz, February 2014 “French-Canadian band Miriodor have carved out an instantly recognisable sound that straddles avant rock and jazz, and in the process have become stalwarts of the Rock In Opposition scene. ... Miriodor’s sound is accessible, playful, and rarely ventures down wilfully dark and obscure alleys. ... This album is...a good place to start with RIO. ...Cobra Fakir, or “Snake Charmer”, is a suitably hypnotic and involving album... The title track..unwinds slowly into a... second segment, Univers Zero with a lighter touch. One can hear Henry Cow’s more accessible melodic structures in here, too. ... some fabulous and tricky interplay, the rhythm section keeping things in strict control. ... Entirely instrumental, the titles have the freedom to say what they want. So we have pulsing songs about bicycle races rubbing shoulders with…speed dating on Mars. ...fun and adventure...runs through Cobra Fakir. ... We have been well and truly entertained. ... Anyone with a sense of wonder at the way some musicians can get the old synapses firing in perhaps unexpected ways should definitely investigate this complex but highly enjoyable album.

  • Authenticity in Electronic Dance Music in Serbia at the Turn of the Centuries
The Other by Itself: Authenticity in electronic dance music in Serbia at the turn of the centuries Inaugural dissertation submitted to attain the academic degree of Dr phil., to Department 07 – History and Cultural Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz Irina Maksimović Belgrade Mainz 2016 Supervisor: Co-supervisor: Date of oral examination: May 10th 2017 Abstract Electronic dance music (shortly EDM) in Serbia was an authentic phenomenon of popular culture whose development went hand in hand with a socio-political situation in the country during the 1990s. After the disintegration of Yugoslavia in 1991 to the moment of the official end of communism in 2000, Serbia was experiencing turbulent situations. On one hand, it was one of the most difficult periods in contemporary history of the country. On the other – it was one of the most original. In that period, EDM officially made its entrance upon the stage of popular culture and began shaping the new scene. My explanation sheds light on the fact that a specific space and a particular time allow the authenticity of transposing a certain phenomenon from one context to another. Transposition of worldwide EDM culture in local environment in Serbia resulted in scene development during the 1990s, interesting DJ tracks and live performances. The other authenticity is the concept that led me to research. This concept is mostly inspired by the book “Death of the Image” by philosopher Milorad Belančić, who says that the image today is moved to the level of new screen and digital spaces. The other authenticity offers another interpretation of a work, or an event, while the criterion by which certain phenomena, based on pre-existing material can be noted is to be different, to stand out by their specificity in a new context.

  • In the Studio: the Role of Recording Techniques in Rock Music (2006)
21 In the Studio: The Role of Recording Techniques in Rock Music (2006) John Covach I want this record to be perfect. Meticulously perfect. Steely Dan-perfect. -Dave Grohl, commencing work on the Foo Fighters 2002 record One by One When we speak of popular music, we should speak not of songs but rather; of recordings, which are created in the studio by musicians, engineers and producers who aim not only to capture good performances, but more, to create aesthetic objects. (Zak 200 I, xvi-xvii) In this "interlude" Jon Covach, Professor of Music at the Eastman School of Music, provides a clear introduction to the basic elements of recorded sound: ambience, which includes reverb and echo; equalization; and stereo placement He also describes a particularly useful means of visualizing and analyzing recordings. The student might begin by becoming sensitive to the three dimensions of height (frequency range), width (stereo placement) and depth (ambience), and from there go on to con sider other special effects. One way to analyze the music, then, is to work backward from the final product, to listen carefully and imagine how it was created by the engineer and producer. To illustrate this process, Covach provides analyses .of two songs created by famous producers in different eras: Steely Dan's "Josie" and Phil Spector's "Da Doo Ron Ron:' Records, tapes, and CDs are central to the history of rock music, and since the mid 1990s, digital downloading and file sharing have also become significant factors in how music gets from the artists to listeners. Live performance is also important, and some groups-such as the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers Band, and more recently Phish and Widespread Panic-have been more oriented toward performances that change from night to night than with authoritative versions of tunes that are produced in a recording studio.

  • Alternate African Reality. Electronic, Electroacoustic and Experimental Music from Africa and the Diaspora
Alternate African Reality, cover for the digital release by Cedrik Fermont, 2020. Alternate African Reality. Electronic, electroacoustic and experimental music from Africa and the diaspora. Introduction and critique. "Always use the word ‘Africa’ or ‘Darkness’ or ‘Safari’ in your title. Subtitles may include the words ‘Zanzibar’, ‘Masai’, ‘Zulu’, ‘Zambezi’, ‘Congo’, ‘Nile’, ‘Big’, ‘Sky’, ‘Shadow’, ‘Drum’, ‘Sun’ or ‘Bygone’. Also useful are words such as ‘Guerrillas’, ‘Timeless’, ‘Primordial’ and ‘Tribal’. Note that ‘People’ means Africans who are not black, while ‘The People’ means black Africans. Never have a picture of a well-adjusted African on the cover of your book, or in it, unless that African has won the Nobel Prize. An AK-47, prominent ribs, naked breasts: use these. If you must include an African, make sure you get one in Masai or Zulu or Dogon dress." – Binyavanga Wainaina (1971-2019). © Binyavanga Wainaina, 2005. Originally published in Granta 92, 2005. Photo taken in the streets of Maputo, Mozambique by Cedrik Fermont, 2018. "Africa – the dark continent of the tyrants, the beautiful girls, the bizarre rituals, the tropical fruits, the pygmies, the guns, the mercenaries, the tribal wars, the unusual diseases, the abject poverty, the sumptuous riches, the widespread executions, the praetorian colonialists, the exotic wildlife - and the music." (extract from the booklet of Extreme Music from Africa (Susan Lawly, 1997). Whether intended as prank, provocation or patronisation or, who knows, all of these at once, producer William Bennett's fake African compilation Extreme Music from Africa perfectly fits the African clichés that Binyavanga Wainaina described in his essay How To Write About Africa : the concept, the cover, the lame references, the stereotypical drawing made by Trevor Brown..

The Squirrel Bait and Rodan genealogies continued to dominate Kentucky's and Chicago's post-rock scene during the 1990s. Half of Rodan, i.e. Tara Jane O'Neil (now on vocals and guitar) and Kevin Coultas, formed Sonora Pine with keyboardist and guitarist Sean Meadows, violinist Samara Lubelski and pianist Rachel Grimes. Their debut album, Sonora Pine (1996), basically applied Rodan's aesthetics to the format of the folk lullaby. Another member of Rodan, guitarist Jeff Mueller, formed June Of 44 (11), a sort of supergroup comprising Sonora Pine's guitarist Sean Meadows, Codeine's drummer and keyboardist Doug Scharin, and bassist and trumpet player Fred Erskine. Engine Takes To The Water (1995) signaled the evolution of "slo-core" towards a coldly neurotic form, which achieved a hypnotic and catatonic tone, besides a classic austerity, on the mini-album Tropics And Meridians (1996). Sustained by abrasive and inconclusive guitar doodling, mutant rhythm and off-key counterpoint of violin and trumpet, Four Great Points (1998) metabolized dub, raga, jazz, pop in a theater of calculated gestures.

Able to create myriad musical statements that are memorable despite the absence of lyrics, its music proves that words can indeed sometimes get in the way. Gösta Berlings Saga’s music evokes the expansive, filmic potential of ‘70s instrumental music without repeating the past. Without retro affectation, the foursome Gösta Berlings Saga combine the cool sleekness of the Ventures and Shadows, the jazz-informed psychedelia of Gong, the wry humor of fellow Scandinavian Laika & the Cosmonauts, the textured knottiness of Yes (in their early ‘70s prime), the exotic evocations of film music (Howard Shore’s scores for Naked Lunch and Ed Wood), the eclectic whimsy of the Canterbury school, and the droll menace of Mogwai. Glue Works is Gösta Berlings Saga’s third album, its first recording released outside Sweden, and its first on Cuneiform. It is one of the most breathtaking instrumental albums to come out in recent years, capable of sending shivers down your spine one minute and making you wonder…what’s next? Cuneiform asked the Swedish group for some of their thoughts on Glue Works, here’s what they said: For glue to work it is of importance that the molecules involved are polarized – that is, they have a positive end and a negative end.
