trinity prep alumni magazine — 2018-19 SCHOOL YEAR — trinityprep.org — 29 HOMECOMING Spirit Week & Athletic Hall of Fame Spirit Week was as active as ever this year. Themed costume days, the pep rally’s contests and powderpuff dance routines, Friday night’s Booster Carnival, Alumni Tailgate, the football game, floats and court, and, of course, the Homecoming dance filled the week with excitement.

A highlight of Spirit Week was the Athletic Hall of Fame induction that honors Trinity Prep’s outstanding athletes, coaches, and administrators who excelled in their endeavors during their time at the school. Trinity Prep was excited to welcome back to campus MIKE SPATOLA, LAWRENCE GOLOMB ’88, and RYAN TRUCHELUT ’04.

The honorees shared their thoughts about their TPS experiences at the all-school ceremony. We’d like to share their accomplishments and some of their remarks with you.

Jingle Mingle What do we do during the holidays? We get together with family and friends, of course! The Alumni Jingle Mingle in mid-December was the perfect excuse, and the Brewstillery in Winter Park was the perfect venue to gather with our Trinity family and friends. Alumni home from college, faculty members old and new, and local alumni came together to celebrate the season and each other.

PHILADELPHIA Road Trip Reunions Philadelphia and New York City were in our sights during the spring semester, with trips in February and April. What fun it was to see members of the northeast branch of the Trinity family! Alumni from all decades came together for the events at The Continental Midtown in Philly and Haswell Green’s in NYC, as we exchanged stories, memories, and business cards. Everyone had such a good time that we’re making plans for next year!

Outside the window in my office, I had a small glimpse into Mary Helyn’s world. Her tireless work ethic was on full display each and every day. Before school, during school and after school, she was there for the students, and they know it. One student comments, “Math is difficult for me, and she is very helpful when I have questions. When I get a good grade she gets excited for me, making me want to do even better next time!” Another one comments, “Mrs. Luse is an extremely intelligent, qualified, and experienced teacher. She commands respect in the classroom, so that we are able to move through the material in a timely fashion. She has an insanely strong grasp of all aspects of calculus and is able to clearly teach and explain the material. She does all that she can to prepare us for college.” Over my short time at Trinity Prep, I have heard multiple students talk about the binders they kept in her class, filled with detailed notes recorded from her assigned problem sets, group work, and lectures. Tests and quizzes were organized in their own sections. These notebooks will make their way into college dorms. I have heard from so many alumni, “Thank you for helping me ace Calc 101 in college. I took your notes with me to college, and I helped to tutor my friends!” Maybe along with a family photo, the honors calculus binder is a fixture in many graduates’ dorm rooms across the country.

Margaret, Lynne, and Mary Helyn, know how much you will all be remembered here at Trinity Prep.
