Aquesta exposició, però, pretén mantenir un diàleg íntim i sorprenent amb l’espectador. Sorprenent perquè aborda un tema tan popular com el cinema de Hollywood des d’un vessant inèdit, l’anunci de films en revistes nord-americanes de gran tiratge com Life, The Saturday Evening Post, Ladies’ Home Journal, Colliers o Esquire. Íntim perquè no és el mateix “un crit al carrer” concebut en grans dimensions, que un cara a cara amb una proposta nogensmenys engrescadora. L’objectiu era el mateix, que anessis al cinema, però el mitjà, amb elements compartits, tenia en compte criteris gràfics diferents per mida, proporcions i distància de visió. Aquesta exposició reuneix més d’un centenar d’anuncis procedents de revistes nord- americanes, publicats entre el 1930 i el 1964, de la col·lecció Roger Biosca. I la seva raresa és conseqüència directa de la seva senzillesa: qui guarda els anuncis que apareixien enmig d’unes revistes que eren llençades una vegada llegides? Els cartells, els programes de mà, fins i tot les fotografies promocionals han estat objecte de col·leccionisme des dels inicis del mitjà. Però ningú –o gairebé– es plantejà de col·leccionar els anuncis de pel·lícules inserits en revistes. I avui pràcticament no hi ha informació sobre aquest rar tresor gràfic. -

INVENTORY TO ARCHIVAL BOXES IN THE MOTION PICTURE, BROADCASTING, AND RECORDED SOUND DIVISION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Compiled by MBRS Staff (Last Update December 2017) Introduction The following is an inventory of film and television related paper and manuscript materials held by the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress. Our collection of paper materials includes continuities, scripts, tie-in-books, scrapbooks, press releases, newsreel summaries, publicity notebooks, press books, lobby cards, theater programs, production notes, and much more. These items have been acquired through copyright deposit, purchased, or gifted to the division. How to Use this Inventory The inventory is organized by box number with each letter representing a specific box type. The majority of the boxes listed include content information. Please note that over the years, the content of the boxes has been described in different ways and are not consistent. The “card” column used to refer to a set of card catalogs that documented our holdings of particular paper materials: press book, posters, continuity, reviews, and other. The majority of this information has been entered into our Merged Audiovisual Information System (MAVIS) database. Boxes indicating “MAVIS” in the last column have catalog records within the new database. To locate material, use the CTRL-F function to search the document by keyword, title, or format. Paper and manuscript materials are also listed in the MAVIS database. This database is only accessible on-site in the Moving Image Research Center. Paint It Black: The Family Tree of the Film Noir Raymond Durgnat (1970) In 1946 French critics having missed Hollywood films for five years saw suddenly, sharply, a darkening tone, darkest around the crime film. The English spoke only of the "tough, cynical Hammett-Chandler thriller," although a bleak, cynical tone was invading all genres, from The Long Voyage Home to Duel in the Sun. The tone was often castigated as Hollywood decadence, although black classics are as numerous as rosy (Euripides, Calvin, Ford, Tourneur, Goya, Lautreamont, Dostoievsky, Grosz, Faulkner, Francis Bacon). Black is as ubiquitous as shadow, and if the term film noir has a slightly exotic ring it's no doubt because it appears as figure against the rosy ground of Anglo-Saxon middle-class, and especially Hol- Iywoodian, optimism and puritanism. If the term is French it's no doubt because, helped by their more lucid (and/or mellow, or cynical, or decadent) culture, the French first understood the full import of the American development. Greek tragedy, Jacobean drama and the Romantic Agony (to name three black cycles) are earlier responses to epochs of disillusionment and alienation. But the socio-cultural parallels can't be made mechanically. Late '40s Hollywood is blacker than '30s precisely because its audience, being more secure, no longer needed cheering up. On the other hand, it was arguably insufficiently mature to enjoy the open, realistic discontent of, say, Hotel du Nord. Look Back In Anger, or Norman Mailer. The American film noir, in the narrower sense, paraphrases its social undertones by the melodramatics of crime and the underworld; Scarface and On the Waterfront mark its limits, both also "realistic" films. -

Introduction The Intellectual Context At a Variety magazine conference at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2004, film producer Lawrence Bender responded dramatically to a question about media censorship in the United States. Censorship had increased suddenly in February 2004 after the inopportune exposure of singer Janet Jackson’s breast at the live televised Superbowl from Houston, Texas, and Bender’s response was biting: ‘I feel like I’m going back to the fifties here . the conservatives are taking over the country’.1 This unease about censorship was shared by many directors, writers and producers in Cannes 2004, with the rise of the Right on American network television and talk radio, and the threat of the Federal Communications Commission imposing large fines on net- works, making it increasingly difficult to debate issues freely or to offer oppositional views to George W. Bush’s Republican administration. Given the widespread dissent from the film industry to Bush’s presidency, it was not surprising that in the last year of Bush’s first term the satirist and filmmaker Michael Moore won the Palme d’Or for Fahrenheit 9/11, his documentary attempt to topple the Republicans. -

Exceptions to American Exceptionalism in Hollywood

Published by the Nordic Association for American Studies (NAAS). “I’ve Got a Hunch We’re Going Around in Circles”: Exceptions to American Exceptionalism in Hollywood Korean War Films Junghyun Hwang Hansung University in Seoul Abstract: Hollywood Korean War films primarily aimed at integrating American citi- zenry into national narratives of cohesion and teleology by displacing contradictions onto the exteriority of American identity. The films dismiss the Korean War as not worth fighting for, yet simultaneously propose that fighting is the only viable option to cope with the futility of war. This paper argues that this closed rationality of we-fight- simply-because-we-fight is a symptom of cold war liberalism. And the cold war sub- ject, caught in the circular movement of finding-while-missing the meaning, prefigures a postmodern subject of drive that transcends the fundamental lack in the process of subjectivization and finds satisfaction in the endless circular movement with no desti- nation. Crucially, American exceptionalism functions as the state fantasy in this pro- cess of denying/displacing inconsistencies inherent to the imagined national identity. This circular rationality, which constitutes the paradigmatic subject-position of late- capitalist American culture, was constructed in the early years of the cold war, and its cultural manifestations can be traced in Hollywood films about the Korean War.
