Visualisation During Large-Scale Events Blekinge Institute of Technology School of Engineering Department of Interaction & Systems Design Master thesis June 2004 VISUALISATION DURING LARGE-SCALE EVENTS - TECHNICAL SUPPORT FOR VOLUNTEERS MASTER THESIS IN COMPUTER SCIENCE & HUMAN WORK SCIENCE AUTHORS: Veronica Carlsson Jessica Sjölander SUPERVISORS: Bo Helgeson Olle Lindeberg Visualisation During Large-Scale Events -Technical Support for Volunteers ABSTRACT Our work, which this master thesis is based upon, has been committed to analysing the settings of large-scale events, proposing, and designing an IT-artefact that can be adapted to different contexts depending on the event. In order to give examples of the contexts of which the IT-artefact could be used, it was developed tailored to two temporary large-scale events. Throughout the thesis we have been struggling with the question of how it is possible to facilitate the co-ordination during large-scale events through visualising tasks and resources. Our aim has been that the design proposal shall support the sharing of tasks and resources to facilitate the cooperation among volunteers during the realisation of temporary large-scale events. We conclude that our design proposal of the IT-artefact should be investigated further in the settings presented in this thesis and others, as we see prospects to develop and adapt the design proposal to various large-scale events in the nearby future. A special thanks is addressed to Isa Hardemo, for the amount of time she spent exchanging ideas and to her providence of much input to this thesis. We want to thank the Work Practice Laboratory, WPL, for their participation brainstorming our design proposal during a research seminar. Our supervisors’ Bo Helgeson and Olle Lindeberg deserve much credit for many precise comments on the drafts for this thesis and for the discussions we have had on the subjects. Especially we want to thank Klas Hallqvist for his support of our ideas and his effort of making our field studies realised. He made it possible for us doing our observations to better grasp the user domain at the Vasaloppet. We want to address thanks to the WHAT-project for good collaboration and sharing of information. A big thanks goes to our collaboration partners at the Hultsfredsfestival and the Vasaloppet, for their kind treatment, their inspiring ideas and their dedicated time to our work. Finally we want to address a special thanks to Olav Berthelsen and Nils Bundgaard at the university of Aarhus, Denmark, for the valuable insights in their work concerning the Roskilde festival. Veronica Carlsson & Jessica Sjölander ii Visualisation During Large-Scale Events -Technical Support for Volunteers PREFACE We are students at Blekinge Institute of Technology and the course, MDA (Human, Computer Technology, Working life). The MDA-course is interdisciplinary, which integrates Computer Science with Human Work Science. It aims at develop software with a special focus on the user. After obtained degree we are qualified in both subjects. Throughout our university education we have been doing projects within both the industry and the government sector. During our project, we perform field studies, analyse the results, and propose new ideas, which we finally design and implement. Bear in mind that we within this work process cooperate with the expected user. The reason behind carrying out field studies is to understand the context in which the user is situated, to mange to integrate the software in a satisfying way for the parties involved. Furthermore, our MDA-course has taught us to perceive the learning and adapting of new technology as an important role within an organisation’s developmental process. We would like to point out that our work has implied collaboration with other university educational backgrounds such as the software engineering course. Hence this is reflected in our work. It is with this previous knowledge and along with these catchwords we have performed our master’s degree. Swedish Dimensional Adjectives. (Svenska dimensionsadjektiv.) Acta Universitatis Stockholmiensis. Stockholm Studies in Scandinavian Philology. New Series. 36. Almqvist & Wiksell International. 377 pp. The purpose of this study is to give a thorough and detailed account and analysis of the semantics of twelve Swedish dimensional adjectives: hög ‘high/tall’, låg ‘low’, bred ‘broad/wide’, smal ‘narrow/thin’, vid ‘broad’, trång ‘narrow’, tjock ‘thick’, tunn ‘thin’, djup ‘deep’, grund ‘narrow’, lång ‘long’ and kort ‘short’. Focus has been placed on their spatial, non-metaphorical sense. The study was written within the framework of cognitive linguistics, where lexical definitions may be given in terms of prototypical and peripheral uses. Four sources of data have been considered: a corpus, consisting of contemporary fiction, an elicitation test, designed for the purpose, dictionary articles on the pertinent adjectives, and the author’s own linguistic intuition as a native speaker. The methodology has involved categorisation of combinations of adjective and noun, based upon three major themes: orientation, function, and shape. In order to determine prototypical uses, precedence has been given to the outcome of the elicitation test over the corpus search. For both sources, frequency has played an important part. The ranking of senses as stated in the dictionary articles has also been considered.

  • SVALA: Annotation of Second-Language Learner Text Based on Mostly Automatic Alignment of Parallel Corpora
SVALA: Annotation of Second-Language Learner Text Based on Mostly Automatic Alignment of Parallel Corpora Mats Wiren´ Arild Matsson Department of Linguistics Sprakbanken,˚ Department of Swedish Stockholm University, Sweden University of Gothenburg, Sweden [email protected] [email protected] Dan Rosen´ Elena Volodina Sprakbanken,˚ Department of Swedish Sprakbanken,˚ Department of Swedish University of Gothenburg, Sweden University of Gothenburg, Sweden [email protected] [email protected] Abstract Annotation of second-language learner text is a cumbersome manual task which in turn requires interpretation to postulate the intended meaning of the learner’s language. This paper describes SVALA, a tool which separates the logical steps in this process while providing rich visual sup- port for each of them. The first step is to pseudonymize the learner text to fulfil the legal and ethical requirements for a distributable learner corpus. The second step is to correct the text, which is carried out in the simplest possible way by text editing. During the editing, SVALA au- tomatically maintains a parallel corpus with alignments between words in the learner source text and corrected text, while the annotator may repair inconsistent word alignments. Finally, the ac- tual labelling of the corrections (the postulated errors) is performed. We describe the objectives, design and workflow of SVALA, and our plans for further development. 1 Introduction Corpus annotation, whether manual or automatic, is typically performed in a pipeline that includes tok- enization, morphosyntactic tagging, lemmatization and syntactic parsing. Because of the deviations from the standard language, however, learner data puts special demands on annotation.

AVAILABLE FROM The Population 'Council, 245 Park Avenue, New Yorke; New York 10017 (Free) EDRS PRICE MF-$0.65 HC -$3.29 DESCRIPTORS *Demography; *Developed Nations; *Family Planning; Health Education; National Programs; Population Distribution; Population Growth; *Population Trends; Social Sciences IDENTIFIERS Sweden ABSTRACT A profile of Sweden is sketched in this paper. Emphasis is placed on the nature, scope, and accomplishments of population activities in the country. Topics and sub-topics include: location and description of the country; population -- size, growth patterns, age structure, urban/rural distribution, ethnic and religious composition;, migration, literacy, economic status, future trends; population growth and socio-economic development -- relationships to national income, size of the labor force, agriculture, social welfare expenditures; history of population programs -- objectives, organization, operations, research and evaluation; private efforts in family planning; educational and scientific efforts in population; and foreign assistance for family planning activities. In many social aspects, Sweden is unique. It has, for example, the highest life expectancy and lowest infant mortality in the world. Per capita gross national product is third largest in the world and has been growing at almost 5 percent a year. Unemployment has been low. An analysis of generation replacement for Swedish females born in 1870 and afterward reveals that, in cohort terms, Swedish fertility has been at or just slightly below replacement roughly from the 1895 cohort onward. Today, the main deficiency in the Swedish family planning program is shortage of personnel and facilities.

  • Beowulf, the Canterbury Tales, and Ljósvetninga Saga
THE PROBLEM OF REVENGE IN MEDIEVAL LITERATURE: BEOWULF, THE CANTERBURY TALES, AND LJÓSVETNINGA SAGA by Ann Park Lanpher A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Ph.D. Graduate Department of English University of Toronto © Copyright by Ann Park Lanpher 2010 The Problem of Revenge in Medieval Literature: Beowulf, The Canterbury Tales, and Ljósvetninga saga Ann Park Lanpher Doctor of Philosophy Department of English University of Toronto 2010 ABSTRACT This dissertation considers the literary treatment of revenge in medieval England and Iceland. Vengeance and feud were an essential part of these cultures; far from the reckless, impulsive action that the word conjures up in modern minds, revenge was considered both a right and a duty and was legislated and regulated by social norms. It was an important tool for obtaining justice and protecting property, family, and reputation. Accordingly, many medieval literary works seem to accept revenge without question. Many, however, evince a great sensitivity to the ambiguities and paradoxes inherent in an act of revenge. In my study, I consider three works that are emblematic of this responsiveness to and indeed, anxiety about revenge. Chapter one focuses on the Old English poem Beowulf; chapter two moves on to discuss Chaucer’s Reeve’s Tale and Tale of Melibee from the Canterbury Tales; and chapter three examines the Old Icelandic family saga, Ljósvetninga saga. I focus in particular on the ii treatment of the avenger in each work. The poet or author of each work acknowledges the perspective of the avenger by allowing him to express his motivations, desires, and justifications for revenge in direct speech.
