MODERN DRUMMER VOL. 8, NO. 12 Cover Photo by Layne Murdock CONTENTS FEATURES TERRY BOZZIO Although his work with such artists as Frank Zappa, the Brecker Brothers, and UK established Terry Bozzio's reputation as a fine drummer, his work with Missing Persons has revealed that there is more to Bozzio than was demonstrated in those other situations. Here, he talks about the hard work that went into starting his own band, explains his feelings that drummers should be more visible, and details his self-designed electronic drumset. by Rick Mattingly 8 OMAR HAKIM The fact that Weather Report and David Bowie have been sharing the same drummer says a lot about Omar Hakim's versatility, especially when one considers the wide range of styles that each of those situations encompasses. But Hakim's background prepared him well for the many diverse musical settings he has encountered, and he recounts that background in this amiable discussion of his life and career. by Robin Tolleson 14 INSIDE CALATO by Rick Van Horn 18 IAN PAICE The drummer for Deep Purple reminisces about the group's formation, discusses the band's reunion after an eight-year breakup, and describes Deep Purple's effect on today's music. He also talks about his experiences as the drummer for Whitesnake and Gary Moore, and explains the differences in playing with a guitar-oriented versus a vocal-oriented band. by Robyn Flans 22 TRISTAN FRY Modest Virtuoso by Simon Goodwin 26 DRIVER'S SEAT COLUMNS Phrasing With A Big Band PROFILES by Mark Hurley 112 PORTRAITS EDUCATION JAZZ DRUMMERS WORKSHOP Allen Herman New Concepts For Improved by Don Perman 30 THE MUSICAL DRUMMER Performance Chord Changes—Part 2 by Laura Metallo, Ph.D. -
Interstellar: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Deluxe Digital Version)
1 2 D A Y O N E Each successive film I’ve done with Hans, I’ve tried to involve him at an earlier and earlier stage. Adding music to a film doesn’t work for me - it’s the reason I can’t temp a movie (edit using some other movie’s music to be replaced later). To me the music has to be a fundamental ingredient, not a condiment to be sprinkled on the finished meal. To this end, I called Hans before I’d even started work on INTERSTELLAR and proposed a radical new approach to our collaboration. I asked him to give me one day of his time. I’d give him an envelope with one page - a page explaining the fable at the heart of my next project. The page would contain no information as to genre or specifics of plot, merely lay out the heart of the movie-to-be. Hans would open the envelope, read it, start writing and at the end of the day he’d play me whatever he’d accomplished. That would be the basis of our score. Hans agreed. I think he shared my frustration with trying to wrangle the mechanics of a massive film right at the tail end of a years-long process of construction - the sheer difficulty of trying to see past what you’ve all built and get back to the beating heart of the story, as a great score must. He understood that what I wanted to do was turn his usual process inside out, giving his musical and emotional instincts free reign, so that the seed from which the score would eventually grow would be fused with the narrative at its earliest stage. -
Richard Harvey
RICHARD HARVEY SELECTED CREDITS THE LITTLE PRINCE (2015) (co-composer) INTERSTELLAR (2014) (conductor) DEATH OF A PRESIDENT (2006) (composer) THE DA VINCI CODE (2006) (conductor, composer: “Kyrie for the Magdalene”) LUTHER (2003) (composer) BIOGRAPHY Since graduating from the Royal College of Music in 1972, at the age of 18, Richard Harvey has been a ubiquitous and diverse presence on the London music scene, not only as a prolific composer and conductor but an exceptional virtuoso performer of almost 700 instruments from around the world - blown, plucked, keyed, bowed, beaten and programmed. Richard's early forays into the professional world involved performing on medieval and Renaissance-era instruments with early music ensemble Musica Reservata, and his own progressive rock and folk band, Gryphon, in which he toured three continents, recorded five albums, and played over 30 different instruments. Richard has come a long way since starting recorder lessons at the age of four, progressing via a stint as first clarinet with the British Youth Symphony Orchestra to recording for and collaborating with major contemporary composers including John Williams, Stanley Myers, Harry Gregson-Williams, Sir Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello and many others. Most recently Richard and long term collaborator and Hollywood legend Hans Zimmer co- composed the score for Onyx’s 2016 production ‘The Little Prince’, an enchanting animation directed by Mark Osborne. Prior to this, Richard conducted the orchestra for Hans Zimmer’s 2014 ‘Interstellar’, an adventure sci-fi starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway. Richard’s collaborations continued in 2014 with Bill Conran with a co- composition for the score of horror film, ‘Curse of the Pheonix’. -

SIOBHAN COSGROVE Studied Flute and Piano at the Royal Academy of Music, Graduating with Honours in 1980
ANN MILLER came to England from her native California in 1972 to further her musical studies. After completing one post graduate year at Trinity College, London and a further year at the Royal Academy of Music, she chose to stay on in this country and become a freelance musician and teacher. She has played with many of the Lon- don orchestras and ballet companies, including the Philharmonia and Birmingham Royal Ballet, and has travelled throughout Europe on concert tours. Since marrying her musician husband and having her two children she now concentrates on music copying and engraving, but has continued to play regularly as time allows. As a copyist, Ann has worked on the music of Richard Harvey, Jerry Goldsmith, Harry Gregson-Williams, John Taverner, Peter Maxwell-Davies and Harrison Birtwistle, and has produced music for television, cinema and all forms of live performance. As a flautist, she now thoroughly enjoys playing in pubs and restaurants with occasional London concerts thrown in for variety .... SIOBHAN COSGROVE studied flute and piano at the Royal Academy of Music, graduating with honours in 1980. Following a period of freelance playing and teaching in London, then 18 months touring abroad, Siobhan arrived on the Island in 1985 to take up a post as a peripatetic woodwind teacher. After two years of peripatetic teaching (and being young and enthusiastic!!) she taught for nine years as head of music at West Wight and Lake Middle schools. In 1996 she saw the error of her ways and went back to teaching for the Isle of Wight Music Service.
