Michala Petri, Recorder MICHALA PETRI, RECORDER Michala Petri, born in 1958 began playing the recorder at the age of three and could be heard for the first time on Danish radio by the age of five. She made her debut as a concert soloist in 1969 in the Tivoli Concert Hall, Copenhagen. Since then, she has toured all the continents and has appeared in the most famous concert halls and festivals in the world. Her astonishing mastery of her instruments as well as the infectious musicality she communicates instantly to audiences have been devoted to works ranging from the baroque to contemporary music. Throughout her career numerous composers have composed and dedicated works to her, including Joan Alberg Amargos, whose 'Northern Concerto' was nominated for a US Grammy 2007 in the category 'Best Contemporary Composition'. To date Michala Petri has premiered more than 100 works by composers like Vagn Holmboe, Per Nørgård, Thomas Koppel, Malcolm Arnold, Steven Stucky and Chen Yi. In the concert hall or on record Michala Petri has worked with artists like Heinz Holliger, James Galway, Gidon Kremer, Pinchas Zukerman, Claudio Abbado, Christopher Hogwood or Keith Jarrett; while ensembles like the English Chamber Orchestra, the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, the Moscow Virtuosi, the Berlin Baroque Soloists and Kremerata Baltica have been her partners on stage or in the studio. Nordic Artists Management / Denmark VAT number: DK29514143 http://nordicartistsmanagement.com Michala Petri is particularly interested in the literature of the flute and guitar, and she has toured extensively with Göran Söllscher, Kazuhito Yamashita and Manuel Barrueco. Since 1992, she has played with Nordic Artists Management / Denmark VAT number: DK29514143 http://nordicartistsmanagement.com the guitarist and lutenist Lars Hannibal and has performed with him all over the world. In recent years Michala Petri has taken part in developing the "modern recorder" with a larger sound capable of matching a modern symphony orchestra - which has already led to several concertos being composed for recorder and large orchestra, the latest being Richard Harvey's "Concerto Incantato", premiered in October 2009 to mark the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong Chamber Orchestra. Other activities in the 2009/10 season have included concerts in Lincoln Center's newly renovated Alice Tully Hall in New York with Cho Liang-Lin, Anthony Newman and others; in Berlin Philharmonie on the occasion of Berliner Barock Solisten's 15. Anniversary and in Beijing Arts Centre with China National Orchestra. Future plans include concerts and cd-recording of four Chinese recorder concertos with Copenhagen Philharmonic and Lan Shui, a tour and cd- recording with DR Vocal Ensemble and Stephen Layton of new works for recorder and choir, composed by Nordic composers, and a premiere of Anders Koppel`s Double Concerto for Recorder, Saxophone and Orchestra. Over the years Michala Petri has received a wealth of honours and awards, including (several times) the German "Echo" Disc Award, the Léonie Sonning Music Prize, the Wilhelm Hansen Music Prize and the H.C. Lumbye Prize for her success in bringing classical music to a wide audience. Michala Petri is Vice President of the Danish Society for Fighting Cancer and a board member of UNICEF Denmark. • MICHALA PETRI Recorder
MICHALA PETRI recorder For 50 years, Michala Petri has been one of the most universally recognized and beloved recorder players in the world. She has performed almost 5.000 concerts and has discography of more than 70 critically-acclaimed and award winning recordings. Michala Petri was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, on July 7, 1958 to musical parents. A child prodigy, she first picked up a recorder at the age of three and by the time she was ten, she made her concerto debut in Tivoli Concert Hall and began her formal studies at the at Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hannover, Germany, with Professor Ferdinand Conrad. By the time she was seventeen, she was already making recordings with the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields. Her repertoire spans the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic eras and extends into contemporary and improvised music and multi-media. This versatility, together with a flawless technique, an insatiable curiosity, and the ability to make an emotional connection with her audiences has contributed to her special appeal as an artist. Her list of collaborators reads like a ‘Who’s Who’ of late 20th century classical music, including such legendary artists as Sir Neville Marriner, Claudio Abbado, Sir James Galway, Gidon Kremer, Heinz Holliger, Henryk Szeryng, Pinchas Zukerman, Maurice Andre, Joshua Bell, Mahan Esfahani, Hille Perl and Keith Jarrett. From her youth, Petri was fascinated with the musical potential of her chosen instrument, however, at the time of her studies the recorder was considered mainly an instrument for early music. But gradually, contemporary composers began taking interest and through Petri’s prompting – and virtuosity - started composing works for her.

A little more than 30 years ago, most western audiences’ knowledge of contemporary Chinese music rested upon two works: The “Yellow River” Piano Concerto and the “Butterfly Lovers” Violin Concerto. Indeed, 30 years ago, these were the only two works permitted to be per- formed for western audiences. But everything changed after the death of Mao and the end of the Cultural Revolution. As a result of the economic reforms instituted by Deng Xiaoping, China was suddenly thrust upon the world’s stage and when the universities reopened in 1977 (most were closed for the duration of the Cultural Revolution), there was a manic drive for China to take her place in the modern world. The past 30 years have witnessed one of the most phenomenal episodes in human history: fol- lowing Deng’s reforms and the subsequent opening up of China, the entirety of 20th century western cultural innovations were suddenly made available to China’s artists and musicians. From Isaac Stern’s pioneering visit to China in 1979, to the later cultural exchanges that brought over many of the West’s most progressive composers and artists to lecture and teach (including George Crumb and Alexander Goehr), the country’s young composers were all at once exposed to the totality of 20th century western music, from Debussy (a composer whose music was detested by Madame Mao), to John Cage! It was during this cultural melee, that the Central Conservatory in Beijing reopened. Students from around the country who had been “sent down” to work in China’s rural areas during the Cultural Revolution rushed to Beijing to be considered for admission.

  • Missing a Beat
Missing a Beat Bridging Ireland's Orchestral Gaps A Review of Orchestral Provision in Ireland Review of Orchestral Provision in Ireland 1 Introductory note from The Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon This note introduces the Report 'Missing a Beat: bridging Ireland's orchestral gaps', from the perspective of the Arts Council. In response to feedback gathered during a major consultation process (2005), in the resulting document, Partnership for the Arts, the Arts Council undertook to “examine national orchestral needs and develop appropriate responses”1. This led to commissioning a review of orchestral provision in late 2007. Much of the primary research was undertaken during 2008 and 2009. The resulting report 'Missing a Beat, Bridging Ireland's Orchestral Gaps' written by Fergus Sheil, was finalised in November 2010. A postscript to the original report was written by the author in May 2012, in order to reflect developments since the original report was completed. This postscript is now appended to the original document. The report offers an overview and analysis of issues affecting orchestral provision in Ireland. It draws upon a wide range of examples of international practice to illustrate what it regards as 'gaps' and to highlight the potential that may exist for development within Ireland. Beyond its usefulness as an important reference document, the report has the potential to stimulate both further dialogue and practical cooperation amongst a broad range of stakeholders within the music sector. In this regard, the report itself notes and anticipates the need for the music sector to develop new models of practice. Embracing such an approach may prove to be essential in terms of ensuring the longer term development and sustainability of orchestral music provision in Ireland.

NORTHERN STARS MUSIC FROM THE NORDIC AND BALTIC REGIONS NAXOS • MARCO POLO • ONDINE • PROPRIUS • SWEDISH SOCIETY • DACAPO Northern Stars Often inspired by folk tradition, nature, landscape and a potent spirit of independence, the music of Scandinavia, Finland and the Baltic states is distinctive and varied, with each country’s music influenced by its neighbours, yet shaped and coloured by its individual heritage. Traveling composers such as Sweden’s Joseph Kraus introduced 18th and early 19th century classical trends from Germany and Italy, but with national identity gaining increasing importance as Romantic ideals took hold, influential and distinctive creative lines were soon established. The muscular strength of Carl Nielsen’s symphonies grew out of the Danish nationalist vigor shown by Friedrich Kuhlau and Niels Gade, extending to names such as Per Nørgård today. Gade was a teacher of Edvard Grieg, who owes his position as Norway’s leading composer, at least in part, to the country’s traditional folk music and the poignant lyricism of the Hardanger fiddle. The music of Finland is dominated by the rugged symphonies of Jean Sibelius, and his Finlandia ensured his status as an enduring national symbol. Sibelius successfully combined the lessons of Viennese romanticism with a strong Nordic character, and this pragmatic approach has generated numerous contemporary giants such as Aus Sallinen, Einojuhani Rautavaara, Kalevi Aho and Kaija Saariaho. Turbulent history in the Baltic States partially explains a conspicuous individualism amongst the region’s composers, few more so than with Arvo Pärt, whose work distils the strong Estonian vocal tradition into music of striking intensity and crystalline beauty.
