The debut LP of Italianate concerti grossi had a monochrome photograph of a church porch on the cover and the modest title “A Recital”. Humble beginnings indeed, but in 1962 “The Gramophone” devoted a full page to an enthusiastic review, concluding that it was played “with more sense of style than all the chamber orchestras in Europe put together”. Even so, it was more than a year before the sequel, “A Second Recital”, appeared. Two more such concert programmes ensued [all four are on CDs 1-2] but by then the Academy had been taken up by another label with a shift in policy more attuned to record collectors than to concert goers.

MODERN DRUMMER VOL. 8, NO. 12 Cover Photo by Layne Murdock CONTENTS FEATURES TERRY BOZZIO Although his work with such artists as Frank Zappa, the Brecker Brothers, and UK established Terry Bozzio's reputation as a fine drummer, his work with Missing Persons has revealed that there is more to Bozzio than was demonstrated in those other situations. Here, he talks about the hard work that went into starting his own band, explains his feelings that drummers should be more visible, and details his self-designed electronic drumset. by Rick Mattingly 8 OMAR HAKIM The fact that Weather Report and David Bowie have been sharing the same drummer says a lot about Omar Hakim's versatility, especially when one considers the wide range of styles that each of those situations encompasses. But Hakim's background prepared him well for the many diverse musical settings he has encountered, and he recounts that background in this amiable discussion of his life and career. by Robin Tolleson 14 INSIDE CALATO by Rick Van Horn 18 IAN PAICE The drummer for Deep Purple reminisces about the group's formation, discusses the band's reunion after an eight-year breakup, and describes Deep Purple's effect on today's music. He also talks about his experiences as the drummer for Whitesnake and Gary Moore, and explains the differences in playing with a guitar-oriented versus a vocal-oriented band. by Robyn Flans 22 TRISTAN FRY Modest Virtuoso by Simon Goodwin 26 DRIVER'S SEAT COLUMNS Phrasing With A Big Band PROFILES by Mark Hurley 112 PORTRAITS EDUCATION JAZZ DRUMMERS WORKSHOP Allen Herman New Concepts For Improved by Don Perman 30 THE MUSICAL DRUMMER Performance Chord Changes—Part 2 by Laura Metallo, Ph.D.

  • Vinyl Vulture
‘D.W’ is for Dick WALTER INTERVIEW FOR VINYL VULTURE ‘Once More from the Top’ As one of the UK’s busiest and most gifted arrangers and composers, Dick Walter has to his credit many television, library music and advertisement scores, whilst specialising in writing for big band. Oliver Lomax speaks to the man behind the music Dick Walter falls into that category of composer/arranger who has had almost their entire canon of work issued in the catalogues of production music companies, unavailable to the record- buying public. In Dick’s case, they include Amphonic, KPM and Conroy and, for the past thirty- five years, he has been supplying library music publishers with finely crafted compositions that bear the hallmarks of an exceptionally gifted and original composer, unafraid to experiment and move forward. In the heyday of British library music during the late 1960s and ’70s, Dick, alongside such names as Keith Mansfield, Syd Dale, Johnny Pearson and Alan Hawkshaw, was one of the composers who took jazz and big band music and remodelled it in his own image. Evidence of this is heard on various Amphonic vinyl albums, which were among the first releases to feature Dick’s work as a composer. LPs such as A Tune for Everyone (Amphonic, 1973) include Dick’s ‘Hacienda Happenings’, an exhilarating big band piece based around a modern, driving rhythm section that has more in common with rock or pop music than the swinging big band style. Super Sounds Unlimited (Amphonic, 1974) features several colourful big band workouts that makes use of some very funky rhythmic patterns.

  • SHADOWS of the SEVENTIES an Article Covering the Shadows’ Most Creative but Criminally Overlooked Decade
SHADOWS OF THE SEVENTIES An article covering the Shadows’ most creative but criminally overlooked decade. By Chris Drake 1 In August 2013, Music Club Deluxe/Parlophone released a 2CD Shadows compilation CD entitled The Collection . The slipcase and inner insert featured a big close-up of the by now obligatory red and white Fender Stratocaster, which during the past 30 or so years has become synonymous with virtually any Shadows-related product. It’s an attractive and eye-catching image. What is worth remarking in this case is that the 35 tracks contained within come almost entirely from the 1970s – a period of the Shadows’ history in which there wasn’t a single red (or Salmon Pink !) Fender Strat in sight. But, in fairness, would a close-up of the scratch plate, body and other furnishings, all uniformly in black, have made the product stand out on the shelves? What is interesting also is that the period covered represents something of a commercial low-point for the band, with very little in terms of hit singles and albums compared to the previous decade. What it does contain, on the other hand, is some of the band’s most creative and impressive recordings and suggests that perhaps the Shadows’ output of the 1970s is worth listening to and evaluating after all. The basis of this article, therefore, will be the contents of MCDLX187: The Collection . Before venturing into the territory so comprehensively covered by the compilation, let’s just pause for a few moments to consider the period leading up to it and the way in which the Shadows seemed to prepare the ground for this new and potentially very exciting decade.

  • Knot a Fanzine #1
KNOT A FANZINE #1 December 2020 Produced by Marc Ortlieb P.O. Box 215, Forest Hill, Vic 3131 Australia who doesn’t do that sort of thing anymore. [email protected] NOTES FROM THE SPECTACLE CASE A number of years ago I decided that I wasn’t going to produce fanzines any more. The cost of postage was ridiculously high and I’d pretty much severed my connections with fandom, with the exception of the occasional poker game with Julian Warner, Seth Lockwood, Carey Handfield, Cindy Clarkson and Justin Ackroyd, none of whom produced fanzines any more either. I had limited contact with some fannish friends, via Facebook. I even dropped in on a couple of Melbourne conventions - albeit usually briefly. But I’d discovered an alternate “fandom” - Scouting - which managed to expand to the point that I was looking after a District of Cub Scouts, was looking after a Box Hill Scout Group, was assisting on courses training Cub Scout Leaders, was on the committee for a major annual camp for Scout Leaders and was attending Cub Scout camps at Pack, District and State level. I also managed to fit in working full time as a Science Teacher. Anyway, things changed. In October 2018, ANZAPA (The Australia New Zealand Amateur Press Association) celebrated its 50th anniversary and, given that I’d first joined in 1975, I figured that I should contribute to the mailing. I’d retired from teaching and, though my involvement in Scouting hadn’t decreased (and still hasn’t) I found that I had time on my hands.
