Using information gathered at these conferences as a point of departure, the Commission undertook this study of the wide-ranging civil rights issues facing Asian Americans in the 1990s. Asian American groups considered in the report are persons having origins in the Far East, Southeast Asia, and the Indian subcontinent. This report presents the results of that investigation. Evidence is presented that Asian Americans face widespread prejudice, discrimination, and barriers to equal opportunity. The following chapters highlight specificareas: (1) "Introduction," an overview of the problems;(2) "Bigotry and Violence Against Asian Americans"; (3) "Police Community Relations"; (4) "Access to Educational Opportunity: Asian American Immigrant Children in Primary and Secondary Schools";(5) "Access to Educational Opportunity: Higher Education"; (6) "Employment Discrimination";(7) "Other Civil Rights Issues Confronting Asian AmericansH; and (8) "Conclusions and Recommendations." More than 40 recommendations for legislative, programmatic, and administrative efforts are made. -

I juxtapose Celeste Ng’s novel Everything I Never Told You with Season One of the podcast Serial in order to explore state procedures and the process of knowledge generation through the dead. I do so in order to consider the relationship between the state and the marginalized and address the gaps in the state’s epistemological processes. I also examine the death and after life of Vincent Chin. Chin has become an integral part of Asian American Studies because of the racial elements involved in his murder and the panethnic Asian American organizing that arose in the wake of his death. -

STATEMENT OF HISTORIC CONTEXTS INTRODUCTION In 1998 the U.S. Congress authorized the National Park Service to prepare a National Historic Landmarks Theme Study on the history of racial desegregation in public education. The purpose of the study is to identify historic places that best exemplify and illustrate the historical movement to provide for a racially nondiscriminatory education. This movement is defined and shaped by constitutional law that first authorized public school segregation and later authorized desegregation. Properties identified in this theme study are associated with events that both led to and followed these judicial decisions. Some properties have already been identified as National Historic Landmarks (NHLs) for their association with well-known decisions and events in the African American strategy to desegregate schools. Currently three landmark schools represent the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Brown v. Board of Education (1954) that overturned the “separate but equal” doctrine of Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) that found separate facilities for blacks constitutional if they were equal to the facilities for whites. Another landmark school, Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, is associated with President Eisenhower’s decision to use federal troops to enforce school desegregation under the U.S. Constitution. These and other historically designated properties discussed in this study are identified as NHL for National Historic Landmark or NHS for National Historic Site and the year designated, i.e., Hampton Institute (NHL, 1969). -

The Righteous Fists of Harmony: Asian American Revolutionaries in the Radical Minority and Third World Liberation Movements, 1968-1978 By Angela L. Zhao Presented to the Department of History in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the BA Degree The University of Chicago April 6, 2018 Abstract In the late 1960s, a group comprised mostly of young second-generation Asian Americans began an attempt to start a socialist political revolution alongside other radical groups of color to uplift their communities from racial discrimination and poverty and critique the capitalist and imperialist structures that caused oppression. The group became the first national Asian American political organization and called themselves I Wor Kuen (IWK), meaning The Righteous Fists of Harmony. This thesis traces the origins and growth of IWK between 1968 and 1978 to show how it radicalized the Asian American political identity by connecting with the activism of the Black Panthers and the Puerto Rican Young Lords, as well as with revolutionary uprisings particularly in Asia but throughout the “Third World.” Predominantly featuring oral histories, I argue that I Wor Kuen played a fundamental role in shaping the concept of Asian American by turning it into an political identity that used racial solidarity and global revolutionary inspiration to resist assimilation and contest racial, class-based, and gendered systems of oppression.
