Gute Pointen Gegen Eine Schlechte Welt Zum Tode Des Kritikers Und Kollegen Hellmuth Karasek (1934 Bis 2015) Nachruf Gute Pointen gegen eine schlechte Welt Zum Tode des Kritikers und Kollegen Hellmuth Karasek (1934 bis 2015) r war, in jeder Hinsicht, freigiebig, mit Anekdoten, Champagner, Rat - Eschlägen und Zusagen für Artikel, Lesungen, TV-Auftritte aller Art. Er, der großzügig Gebende, wollte anderen gefallen, wusste das und machte sich gelegentlich sogar darüber lustig. Hellmuth Karasek, der unterhaltsame Intellektuelle und intellektuelle Entertai - ner, war ein Flüchtling. Das hat ihn ge - prägt. Die ostschlesische Heimat musste er 1944 verlassen, er wollte ankommen, irgendwo und möglichst schnell.   • Populism and Collective Memory; Comparing Fascist Legacies In
    Populism and Collective Memory Right-wing populism is a global phenomenon that challenges several pillars of liberal democracy, and it is often described as a dangerous political ideology because it resonates with the fascist idea of power in terms of anti-pluralism and lack of minorities’ protection. In Western Europe, many political actors are exploiting the fears and insecurities linked to globalization, economic crisis, and mass migrations to attract voters. However, while right-wing populist discourses are mainstream in certain countries, they are almost completely taboo in others. Why is right-wing populism so successful in Italy, Austria, and France while in Germany it is marginal and socially unacceptable? It is because each country developed a certain collective memory of the fascist past, which stigmatizes that past to different levels. For this reason, right-wing populism can find favorable conditions to thrive in certain countries, while in others it is considered as an illegitimate and dangerous idea of power. Through a comparative study of eight European countries, this book shows that short-term factors linked to levels of corruption, economic situation, and quality of democracy interact with long-term cultural elements and collective memories in determining the social acceptability of right-wing populist discourses. Luca Manucci is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Lisbon, Portugal. He obtained his PhD at the University of Zurich, where he worked at the Department of Political Science. A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts February 1973 ABSTRACT Max Frisch, a Swiss, and one-time professional architect, is considered one of the most important literary men writing in German since World War II. He cannot easily be classified in conventional literary terms; his scope of artistic activity is too broad and therefore evades a single and clear-cut definition. This thesis is primarily concerned with Max Frisch, the playwright. There are numerous ways in which one can view the theatrical efforts of Frisch. He is often considered a devoted disciple of Bertolt Brecht, an antithetical imitator of Thornton Wilder, and a friendly rival of Friedrich Durrenmatt. I have chosen a less comparative view of Frisch's plays, and will concentrate on one essential feature of his dramaturgy: how his plays reflect his personal and lingering humanistic concerns. Frisch's sincere interest in the humanistic ethic is, however, crucially different from the humanism of the past. This new understanding of the meaning of humanism will be discussed in the introductory pages of this thesis. The inhumanity clearly displayed during World War II was the instigating factor for Frisch's serious and sincere probing of man, the social and political creature.

Morgan College of Education ABSTRACT While scholars have widely discussed the cultural, economic, and political influence of the United States on Europe in general and Germany in particular, the realm of sports has received surprisingly little attention. This study ties in with the scholarly debate about Americanization and / or globalization that started in the first half the 1990s. It examines the presentation of American football in England from the 1890s through World War II as well as in Germany following the war to the present day. The study discusses what non-Americans wrote about football and what their countrymen and –women read about it. The study draws on English and German newspapers and magazines, particularly the London Times and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. It also examines the role American military, radio, television, and movies played in the diffusion of American football. In the case of Germany, the researcher draws on extensive qualitative interviews with several of the “founding fathers” of American football in Germany as well as his own experiences in the sport. The work demonstrates that American football arrived in Germany on a field that had been prepared by a three-hundred-year process of imagining Amerika.
