Despite changes in editorship, the periodical's primary emphasis was consistently upon the varied aspects of the British theatre: the drama, criticism, personalities, history, the audience, and management. Papers contributed to the magazine by the most prominent actors, critics, managers, and other dramatic author­ ities gave it unusual substance and prestige. Taken as a whole, The Theatre provides a highly illuminating historical picture of the numerous facets of the late Victorian theatre, a period of great significance in British dramatic history. This study is devoted to a descriptive analysis of certain major aspects of the late Victorian theatre as reported in The Theatre from July, 1878, through December, 1897. The thirty-nine volumes of the maga­ zine have furnished the primary source of material, with certain supple­ mentary sources utilized as required. The first chapter gives a kaleidoscopic picture of the magazine as a whole, with a description of its salient features as treated by each of its editors. The second chapter consists of a descriptive analysis of four major themes in the periodical which concerned the th e a tre I ts e lf . These are: the make-up and conduct of the audience; the merits of a proposed subsidised theatre; the worth of a proposed dramatic academy; certain problems in playwritlng. Similarly, the iv third chapter comprises a descriptive analysis of the relationships of the Stage and four potent social forces: The Church; Government Censor­ ship; the Press as represented by the dramatic critics; and Society. The fourth chapter consists of a critical examen of the advent of Henrik Ibsen's plays upon the British stage and their subsequent far- reaching effects. The Theatre witnessed numerous changes In the development of the stage. Among those noted were changes in the composition and attitudes of audiences, attributable in part to a decrease In the prejudice toward the acted drama. Pressing problems involving theatre patrons centered about the pit, theatre etiquette, and the issuing of passes. Also ob­ served were the Increasingly friendly relations between the Stage and the Church, and between the Stage and Society. The most momentous change of all, however, was the emergence of the British drama of thesis, given Its greatest impetus by the realism of the social dramas of Henrik Ibsen. Major controversies during the period covered by the magazine centered about dramatic writing, criticism, government censorship, a proposed subsidised theatre, and a proposed dramatic academy. The merits and demerits of the Issues raised In the course of the debates on these subjects were faithfully chronicled in The Theatre. The Theatre, therefore, Is valuable to the present-day dramatic student because It Is an accurate mirror of the late Victorian stage In all of Its aspects. v INTRODUCTION Robert W. Lowe, a well known dramatic authority, writing In 1888, commented on The Theatre magazine as follows: This Is one of the most valuable of dramatic records. Giving, as It does, the full cast, date of production, etc. of every play of any Importance, and giving also admirable portraits of actors, authors, and critics, it Is In Itself a complete history of the contemporary stage and will be, to coming generations, a work of priceless value. Sets are, even now, scarce, and bring high p rice s.* Walter Graham, In his monumental survey of English literary periodicals, singled out The Theatre for specific comment: Among the legion of theatrical periodicals in the latter half of the century, The Theatre, a [sic] Monthly Review and Magazine (1877-1897) Is distinguished not only by Its longer life but also by the scope of Its design. In the 'eighties and 'nineties, The Theatre was unquestionably a periodical of dominating prestige and influence. In fact, not one among those which have flourished since seems to command quite the same respect from readers or support from the great actors of the age. The Theatre was founded in January, 1877, as a "weekly critical review," and continued as a weekly until July, 1878. Beginning with August, 1878, however, It became a monthly with the subtitle "A Monthly Review and Magazine." In Its twenty years of existence the editorship of the magazine changed hands from time to time. Yet its primary ^Robert W. As Graham suggested, articles on such subjects contributed by the prominent actors, managers, critics, and theatrical historians of the day gave this magazine ”an unusual substance.” Taken as a whole, the contents of The Theatre give the reader of today a highly illumi­ nating historical picture of the numerous facets of the late Victorian th e a tre . From January, 1880, to June, 1893, Inclusive, the scope of the periodical was enlarged to encompass not only the drama, but also the fine arts and music. Consonant with this change, the subtitle during those years was ”A Monthly Review of the Drama, Music, and the Fine Arts.” Although The Theatre *s coverage of music and the fine arts

    A LIVELY THEatRE There’s a revolution afoot in theatre design, believes architectural consultant RICHARD PILBROW, that takes its cue from the three-dimensional spaces of centuries past The 20th century has not been a good time for theatre architecture. In the years from the 1920s to the 1970s, the world became littered with overlarge, often fan-shaped auditoriums that are barren in feeling and lacking in intimacy--places that are seldom conducive to that interplay between actor and audience that lies at the heart of the theatre experience. Why do theatres of the 19th century feel so much more “theatrical”? And why do so many actors and audiences prefer the old to the new? More generally, does theatre architecture really matter? There are some that believe that as soon as the house lights dim, the audience only needs to see and hear what happens on the stage. Perhaps audiences don’t hiss, boo and shout during a performance any more, but most actors and directors know that an audience’s reaction critically affects the performance. The nature of the theatre space, the configuration of the audience and the intimacy engendered by the form of the auditorium can powerfully assist in the formation of that reaction. A theatre auditorium may be a dead space or a lively one. Theatres designed like cinemas or lecture halls can lay a dead hand on the theatre experience. Happily, the past 20 years have seen a revolution in attitude to theatre design. No longer is a theatre only a place for listening or viewing.

Translation and Authenticity There would be no dispute that few works of art have been ‘translated’ more widely than some plays in the Shakespeare canon. With a Shakespeare play, translation does not confine itself to language alone; its theatrical mode also undergoes a transformation when it is staged in a new cultural environment. Odd it may sound, Shakespeare has been translated even in England. It was Harley Granville-Barker who first emphasized the temporal distance between Shakespeare’s plays and the modern audience that needs to be translated: “The literature of the past is a foreign literature. We must either learn its language or suffer it to be translated”(7). Elizabethan plays “are like music written to be performed upon an 202 Yeeyon Im instrument now broken almost beyond repair”(9). Shakespeare’s plays, their putative universality notwithstanding, underwent changes and adaptations to suit the demands of different times. Shakespeare was ‘translated’ in terms of theatre as well. Anachronism was essential on the Elizabethan stage, which accommodated the fictional world of drama as well as the reality of the audience’s everyday life through presentation and representation. Elizabethan anachronism gave way to a more accurate representation of the dramatic world in the illusionist proscenium stage of the Victorian age. At present, modern directors are at liberty to ‘translate’ Shakespeare’s plays virtually in any period and style as they wish; it took an iconoclastic experimental spirit to break with the long‐standing Victorian tradition of archaeologically correct and pictorially spectacular staging.

In particular, this study investigates the use of nineteenth and twentieth century established gesture in the Shakespearean film adaptations from 1899-1922. The gestures described and illustrated by published gesture manuals are juxtaposed with at least one leading actor from each film. The research involves films from the experimental phase (1899-1907), the transitional phase (1908-1913), and the feature film phase (1912-1922). THE UNIVERSITY OF WINCHESTER ABSTRACT FOR THESIS ‘Respectable Capers’: Class, Respectability and the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company 1877-1909 Michael Stephen Goron This thesis will demonstrate ways in which late Victorian social and cultural attitudes influenced the development and work of the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company, and the early professional production and performance of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas. The underlying enquiry concerns the extent to which the D’Oyly Carte Opera organisation and its work relate to an ideology, or collective mentalité, maintained and advocated by the Victorian middle- classes. The thesis will argue that a need to reflect bourgeois notions of respectability, status and gender influenced the practices of a theatrical organisation whose success depended on making large-scale musical theatre palatable to ‘respectable’ Victorians. It will examine ways in which managerial regulation of employees was imposed to contribute to both a brand image and a commercial product which matched the ethical values and tastes of the target audience. The establishment of a company performance style will be shown to have evolved from behavioural practices derived from the absorption and representation of shared cultural outlooks. The working lives and professional preoccupations of authors, managers and performers will be investigated to demonstrate how the attitudes and working lives of Savoy personnel exemplified concerns typical to many West End theatre practitioners of the period, such as the drive towards social acceptability and the recognition of theatre work as a valid professional pursuit, particularly for women.

  • The Mid-Victorian Opera Burlesque and Its Bourgeois Audience Abstract
    From Satirical Piece to Commercial Product: the Mid-Victorian Opera Burlesque and its Bourgeois Audience Abstract (150 words) Current studies of burlesque position it as a subversive genre that questioned cultural and social hierarchies and spoke to diverse audiences. Central to this interpretation are burlesque’s juxtapositions of high and low culture, particularly popular and operatic music. This article problematizes this view, proposing that mid-Victorian burlesques lost their satirical bite. Demonstrating little concern for the tastes or interests of the poorer or the most elite members of the audience, they specifically targeted the bourgeoisie. The article places three mid-Victorian burlesques in the wider context of the commercial development of the West End post the 1851 Great Exhibition. It proposes that this broader context, and not the genre’s perceived social role, provides the key to understanding the impulses driving the musical choices. It argues that juxtapositions of ‘high’ and ‘low’ music were far from subversive, rather they were included for commercial reasons, offering variety, but variety within strict bourgeois limits. Over the last thirty years, musicologists have increasingly questioned the processes of canon formation and the assumed sanctity of the musical work. A significant outcome of this development within opera studies has included the increased attention paid by scholars to the idea of musical drama as event. This has had an important impact on which genres and composers are deemed worthy of study. Accordingly, opera studies have increasingly encompassed a wide variety of popular theatrical genres. Several important studies have established the performance practices and the role of music in particular popular genres.1 We are also beginning to see new, rigorous and critical overviews of the development of certain genres focussed on particular metropolitan centres.

    Faculty of English ‘The Auditive Intelligence’: Intonation in Henry James James Lello St Catharine’s College University of CamBridge This dissertation is suBmitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy DecemBer 2019 ABSTRACT This thesis seeks to retrieve the ‘auditive intelligence’ in the work of Henry James, but it does so by first recognising some of the theoretical and historical obstacles that lie in the way of such a recovery. Structural linguistics has been responsible for encouraging the assumption that there are no better or worse ways of speaking, that the differences between writing and speech are of little significance, and that tone is merely a subset of language. James’s formulation of the ‘auditive intelligence’ in his revised essay on the French actor Benoît-Constant Coquelin (1915) emerges in opposition to further, historically situated, impediments: the lack of any ‘serious study’ of tone, the false choice between saying and doing, the theatrical vogue for pictorialism, and the priority of the eye over the ear. The ‘auditive intelligence’ makes it possible to conceive of tone as in itself a complete drama, a revelatory instant where previously concealed relations suddenly adopt an emphatic salience. In The Tragic Muse (1890) the discrimination of tone, both as a quality of the voice and of its discernment, emerges as one form this intelligence takes. This mode of personal and cultural edification is developed with reference to ‘The Question of Our Speech’ (1905), James’s essays on the speech and manners of American women (1906-1907), The Awkward Age (1899), and The Ambassadors (1903). The discrimination of tone depends upon the accumulation and fulfilment of experience, and this is particularly evident when tone remains long after the death of its speaker, or else is capable of preserving life itself.
