About the AuthorBorn in The United Kingdom January 01, 1851 Died January 01, 1904. William Davenport Adams (28 December 1851 in Brixton, London[1] - 1904 in Wandsworth, London) was an English journalist and author. Born in Brixton, London, he was the son of William Henry Davenport Adams, also a journalist and author. Educated at Merchant Taylors' School and Edinburgh University, he began newspaper work in 1870, working in Greenock and for the Nottingham Daily Guardian. He became literary editor of the The Globe in 1885, and was also well known as a dramatic critic. He published many collections of poetry, several books about books, and edited a Dictionary of English Literature (1877) and a Dictionary of the Drama (1899).     The Many Mrs. Greys 299 The Many Mrs. Greys: Confusion and Lies about Elizabeth Caroline Grey, Catherine Maria Grey, Maria Georgina Grey, and Others Patrick Spedding here were a number of mid-nineteenth-century British writers Twith the name Mrs. Grey. It is symptomatic of the confusion these authors created that a number of nineteenth-century publishers, collec- tors, and critics, on the one hand, and modern cataloguers, bibliogra- phers, and scholars, on the other, regularly conflate the works of at least three Mrs. Greys under the one name. What this indicates is that the confusion over which Mrs. Grey wrote which work has existed for over one hundred and ‰fty years. The editors of the third edition of The Cambridge Bibliography of En- glish Literature (hereafter CBEL3),1 for example, list thirty-nine works under the name “Elizabeth Caroline Grey, née Duncan, 1798–1869.” Al- though CBEL3 has — seemingly — identi‰ed the author of these works with great precision, not only are the works of many Mrs. Greys includ- ed in the list, but Elizabeth Caroline Grey was not the author of most of the titles listed; indeed, she may not have written any of them. Worse still, it is quite likely that everything we know about “Elizabeth Caro- line Grey” is actually the fabrication of a compulsive liar. 1. The contributions made to its development by men are well documented. Those made by women have received much less recognition. This thesis addresses that hiatus, by examining the life, celebrity, and influence of English actress, Janet Achurch. It focuses on her 1889–91 Australian tour and the ambivalent responses to her portrayal of Nora in Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House. Achurch, with her husband, actor Charles Charrington, came to Australia under contract to entrepreneurs Williamson, Garner, and Musgrove. On 14 September, 1889 she opened at the Princess’s Theatre in Melbourne with A Doll’s House, the play now most closely connected with the concept of the New Woman.
