    Sporting Legends: Axel Merckx

    SPORTING LEGENDS: AXEL MERCKX SPORT: CYCLING COMPETITIVE ERA: 1993 - 2007 Axel Merckx (born August 8, 1972 in Uccle, Belgium), the son of the legendary Eddy Merckx, was a professional road bicycle racer since November 1993. In 1995 he joined Team Motorola as a team-mate of the young Lance Armstrong. Despite several strong years of racing, including winning the Belgian national championship in 2000, Axel is probably still more famous for being the son of five-time Tour de France champion Eddy Merckx than for any of his cycling exploits. Despite being overshadowed by his father's formidable record, Axel has repeatedly vowed to make his mark by accomplishing feats Eddy never managed - including a Tour de France stage win at the top of Alpe d'Huez and a win in the Paris-Tours World Cup race - but has yet to make good on these promises. He has a large number of fans in Belgium, and would undoubtedly engender a great deal more goodwill if he were ever to achieve either of those elusive wins. One place where he has overshadowed his father is at the Olympic Games. A good climber, Axel is probably at his best in the mid-altitude mountain ranges, notably the Massif Central and the Ardennes. His favorite race, and the one he feels best in, is Liège-Bastogne-Liège. He is also always aiming for a Tour de France stage win, and can often be found in long breaks. His sprinting capacities are not that strong, so he is often beaten at the finish. SPORTING LEGENDS: AXEL MERCKX Merckx enjoyed his 2004 Olympic Bronze success in Athens.

    Edition Spéciale 245 Ce 27 avril 2014 : La Doyenne des Classiques souffle ses 100 bougies à Ans… Depuis de nombreuses années, la commune d’Ans et le cyclisme connaissent une véritable histoire d’amour. C’est notamment en 1992 que l’aventure « Liège-Bastogne-Liège » débuta à Ans, en quittant son arrivée traditionnelle à Liège pour arriver tout d’abord rue de l’Yser et enfin rue Jean Jaurès au terme de la terrible côte de Saint-Nicolas. La Doyenne inspire le respect à tous les coureurs, celui qui s’y impose ne peut être qu’un Grand, il suffit à ce propos de parcourir le palmarès de cette course en page 3. Mais derrière l’exploit purement sportif de ce Liège- Bastogne-Liège, se cache également une fantastique fête populaire qui rassemble toutes les générations, que l’on soit sportif ou non. A une époque où tout se paie, le cyclisme est encore un des rares sports « Spectacle » entièrement gratuit pour le public. En tant que Bourgmestre d’Ans, je suis particulièrement fier de cette arrivée qui, l’espace d’un jour, met à l’honneur notre commune. Je voudrais à ce propos mettre en exergue le travail accompli par le personnel de l’Echevinat des Sports et des Travaux dirigé par Grégory Philippin, ainsi que par les services de Police. En effet, au cours de ces dernières années, une véritable complicité s’est installée entre la société organisatrice « Amaury Sport Organisation » et notre commune, qui au travers de cette manifestation démontre ses compétences en matière d’organisation. En marge de ces aspects techniques, Ans a également voulu marquer le coup à l’occasion de cette 100e édition.

With $120,000 in prize money on the line and some of the top Canadian cyclists and professional American teams registered to participate, the racing figures to be fast-paced and exciting from start to finish. Below is a list of some of the top riders coming to BC Superweek, although if history has taught us anything, it’s to never count out top local riders. Many of them are now on this list as returning pros after catching the eye of team directors at past races. MEN'S FIELD Ryan Anderson Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies Born in Edmonton, but a resident of North Vancouver, this is Anderson’s seventh season on the professional cycling circuit and third with Optum Pro Cycling p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies. Just over two weeks ago, Anderson finished second at the Canadian National Road Race Championships for the third time in his career. The 27-year-old has no fewer than eight podium appearances in 2015, including first place finishes in Stage 3 of the North Star Grand Prix in Minnesota and in Stage 2 of Troféu Alpendre do Guadiana in Portugal. He made it onto the podium three times at BC Superweek last year, including second place finishes at the Tour de Delta Brenco Criterium, White Spot | Delta Road Race, and the Global Relay Gastown Grand Prix.
