Hotel Holiday Inn Lisboa IST Congress Centre Monday, 9th October, 2017 Visit to Alcobaça and Óbidos Full Day (09h00 – 17h00*) Departure from IST * Arrival times are approximate Depart to Alcobaça, a city in the centre of Portugal. The city grew along the valleys of the rivers Alcoa and Baça, from which it derives its name. The city of Alcobaça became notable after the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques decided to build a church to commemorate the Conquest of Santarém from the Moors in 1147. Established in 1153, the church later evolved into the Monastery of Alcobaça, one of the most magnificent gothic monuments in the country, and which has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since December 1989 (13th Session of the World Heritage Committee held in Paris). The complex of Alcobaça Monastery is one of the most notable and best conserved examples of Cistercian architecture. To the south of Alcobaça is the town of Óbidos, one of the most charming Portuguese villages, completely enclosed within the ramparts of the Medieval Castle. After lunch, you will take in a visit of Óbidos by strolling along a maze of cobbled streets, where at each step, one comes upon vestiges of different civilizations. From the hidden corners and high walled gardens of the old medina area, to its Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque features, the town is an extensive work of art carved, destroyed and rebuilt throughout many centuries. Besides its material heritage, Óbidos is full of historical tradition and is today one of the main jewels of the country. The tour will be accompanied by an English speaking guide and includes lunch at the “Muralhas” Restaurant. Tuesday, 10th October, 2017 Visit to the city of Lisbon Morning only (09h00 – 12h30*) Departure from IST * Arrival times are approximate Visit this remarkable city of Lisbon, with its near 2.500 years of history, and its downtown and historical districts. “Lisboa” one of Europe’s greatest hidden gems, and is a city of spectacular natural beauty, wondrous architecture and vast history. From its perch on the steep hillsides above the Rio Tagus, the Portuguese capital of Lisbon offers all the delights of other European capital without the fuss. It is filled with majestic monasteries, gothic cathedrals and quaint museums. The colourful cityscape is worth the trip alone, but the real delights to discover lie in the narrow lanes of the city's backstreets. There are a number of landmarks worth visiting that include the Jerónimos Monastery, a master piece of the Manueline style; Belem Tower from where the Portuguese Caravelas (ships) departed on their expeditions to find the maritime routes to Africa, Asia and Brazil, in glorious sea adventures; the Monument to the Discoveries; and the 12th century fortress of St. George’s, located on top of one of Lisbon’s seven hills, and overlooking the whole downtown and river Tagus and the former Moorish quarter of Alfama, where some buildings that have survived the 1755 big earthquake can still be seen. You will visit to the “Arte Antiga” Museum (Antique Art), created in 1884, and housed in the Palácio Alvor for almost 130 years. It is the home to the most important Portuguese public collection of art, ranging from paintings to sculpture, and gold and silverware, as well as decorative arts from Europe, Africa and the Far East. The tour will be accompanied by an English speaking guide and includes entrance fees to the “Arte Antiga” Museum (Antique Art). Wednesday, 10th October, 2017 Mafra / Sintra / Cabo da Roca / Cascais / Estoril Full Day (09h00 – 18h00*) Departure from IST * Arrival times are approximate Depart to Mafra for a visit to the Mafra Palace. The Palace was built in the 18th century by order of King João V (1689-1750). The Royal Convent and Palace of Mafra is the most important baroque monument in Portugal. All in limestone and marble from this region (Pêro Pinheiro and Sintra), the building covers an area of almost four hectares, and has 29 inner yards and courtyards. Such magnificence was only possible due to the Brazilian gold that poured into the country, allowing the King to carry out his patronage of the arts and the strengthening of royal authority. Sintra, the next stop on the tour, is a picturesque Portuguese town that is set amidst the pine-covered hills of the Serra de Sintra. This hilly and slightly cooler climate enticed the nobility and elite of Portugal, who constructed exquisite palaces, extravagant residences and decorative gardens. The variety of fascinating historic buildings and beautiful scenery has established Sintra as a fantastic destination. Lunch is followed by a visit to the Sintra Palace, the best-preserved medieval royal residence in Portugal. It was inhabited, more or less continuously, from the early 15th century to the late 19th century and is a significant landmark in Sintra’s cultural landscape. Visit to Cabo da Roca, a rugged headland on the westerly most point of continental Europe. The Cabo de Roca’s cliffs, pounded by the Atlantic Ocean, were believed to be the edge of the world up until the late 14th century and the desolate scenery adds to the allure of the location, and where you can trek along the hiking trails which follow coastal paths. A lighthouse, coffee and gift shops can be found here. On your return to Lisbon, you will drive through Cascais and Estoril. The tour will be accompanied by an English speaking guide and includes lunch at the “Curral dos Caprinos” Restaurant.
