BY JOUKO LINDSTEDT & MAX WAHLSTRÖM BALKAN ENCOUNTERS – OLD AND NEW IDENTITIES IN SOUTH-EASTERN EUROPE HELSINKI 2012 ISBN 978-952-10-8538-3 (PAPERBACK), ISBN 978-952-10-8539-0 (PDF), ISSN 0780-3281 Max Wahlström1 Greek Cultural Influence on the Bulgarian National Revival: The Case of Petăr Beron’s “Fish Primer” (1824) Introduction In this article I explore the early 19th century Greek cultural influence on the Bulgarian National Revival2 (Văzraždane) and the creation of the modern Bulgarian literary language. I approach the question by exploring the ideas surrounding the creation of the Riben Bukvar, or “Fish Primer”, by Petăr Beron, published in 1824. This was the first Bulgarian textbook, and in contrast to coeval Bulgarian literature, written consistently in language based on spoken Bulgarian. The early years of Beron’s adulthood that led to the creation of the Fish Primer offer an illuminating perspective on the role of Greek culture in the Balkan society of the era. Special attention will be given to the influence of the well-known Greek scholar and educator Konstantinos Vardalachos on the thinking of the young Petăr Beron. One of the most recent contributions to the question of Greek influence is by Raymond Detrez (2008), who, by analyzing the shared “Romaic” identity of the Greek Orthodox millet of the Ottoman Empire, reaches the conclusion that the Greeks presented no threat to the emerging Bulgarian national consciousness. However, as some additional evidence points to the contrary, I begin by examining the conflicting interpretations of this much-debated question in Bulgarian historiography.

BULGARIAN REVIVAL INTELLIGENTSIA Natural Philosophy System of Dr. Petar Beron Petar Beron was born at year 1800 in the town Kotel, “a miniature of Nuremberg”, in a rich family of handcrafts and merchants. In Kotel he received his primary education at the cell school of Stoiko Vladislavov and Raino Popovich. He went further to Bucharest where he entered the school of Greek educator Konstantin Vardalach. The latter, a famous for his time pedagogue and encyclopedist, had influenced a lot for the formation of Beron as scientist and philosopher. In 1824 Beron is compelled to leave Bucharest, because he participated in a “Greek plot”, and goes to Brashov, another Rumanian town, where he compiled “The Fish Primer”. This book was fundamental for the Reformation in Bulgaria and an achievement for the young scholar. In 1825 Beron enrolled as a student in Heidelberg University, Germany, where he proceeded philosophy until two years later when he transferred to Munich to study medicine. On the 9 July 1831, after successfully defending a doctoral dissertation, Beron was promoted Doctor in Medicine. Dissertation was in Latin and concerned an operation technique in Obstetrics and Gynecology. The young physician worked in Bucharest and Craiova, but after several years of general practice he quit his job and started merchandise. After fifteen years he made a fortune and went to Paris where he lived as a renter. Here he started a real scientific career. His scope was to entail all the human knowledge by that time and to make a natural philosophy evaluation by creating a new “Panepisteme”. His encyclopedic skills were remarkable.

Analysis of key themes, concepts and categories related to the environment, events and approaches to environmental protection and the environmentally sound development of sectors of the economy is didikticheski targeted. Considering the emergence and development of geo-ecological issues, their scope and their importance to the environment, systematize some species and some approaches to solving them. Geography education in grade 9 and 10 involves acquiring knowledge, developing skills and composing behaviors of objective perception and assessment of the reality of global, regional and local aspect. The emerging consumer and individualistic culture snowballing globalization, are increasingly occurring global warming, declining biodiversity form new realities which education must respond appropriately. The objective, consistency, accessibility and relevance in real terms are meaningful, logical accents. Whether and how reproduced in the study of Geography of Bulgaria and the world is the subject of research study in this report.

ALEXANDER KJOSEV / SOFIA DIE ABENTEUER DES BULGARISCHEN ZIVILISATIONSVERSTÄNDNISSES Die bulgarische Aneignung ideologischer Begriffe und Antithesen Die Rezeption der Zivilisationskategorie in Bulgarien erfolgte zunächst im Rahmen einer sukzessiven Substitution jener Argumente, die das Recht des bulgarischen Volkes auf ein würdiges Sein neben anderen Völkern begründeten. In den 20er–40er Jahren des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde die auf „Weltfortschritt“ und Verbundenheit mit den Leistungen der Zivilisation bezogene Argumenta- tion allmählich genauso gesellschaftsrelevant wie die ältere Beweisführung, die sich auf historische Werke berief, in denen die Präsenz der Bulgaren in der Heiligen Geschichte nachgewiesen wurde1. Ohne explizit als Begriff aufzutre- ten, begann sich in jenen Jahren die vage Kategorie der materiellen und geisti- gen Zivilisation nach und nach von anderen, eher mittelalterlichen, etwa mit einem heiligen Stammbaum oder mit königlichen bzw. religiösen Heldentaten verbundenen Wertvorstellungen des Volkes abzuspalten. Infolgedessen, daß in den 40er und 50er Jahren des 19. Jahrhunderts aus- ländische Konsuln und katholische bzw. protestantische Geistliche eine bewuß- te Kulturpolitik betrieben, die slawophile Propaganda seit den 50er Jahren expandierte, die ersten bulgarischen Zeitungen und Zeitschriften Pressebeiträ- ge aus dem Ausland nachdruckten, viele Bulgaren im Ausland studierten und ihre Erfahrungen in persönlichen Briefen, diversen Artikeln und Vorworten zu Papier brachten sowie dank des in den Jahren 1835–1860 ausgebauten

Until the 1860s, there was not any serious political nationalistic movement in Bulgaria. The nationalistic intellectual elite was formed after 1860. Both a la ck of proper secular, independent Bulgarian education and the Greek domination of Bulgarian culture resulted in Bulgarian nationalism arising relatively late. Booming trade in the Black Sea basin gradually began to change living standards in the Bulgarian lands. By the beginning of th e 19th century, the ethnic Bulgarians began to enjoy the benefits of increasing trade and agricultural imports.
