Geological, geophysical, geochemical and territorial aspects of this earthquake and its heritage for the Italian society Foreword The aim of this special issue of “Annals of Geophysics” is to follow the seismic thread that, starting with the Belice earthquake (14-15 January, 1968), crosses the recent history of our Country until the days of the 2016 Amatrice seismic sequence. We interpreted the Belice earthquake like the “zero event” for the developing of the connections between the Italian society and the seismic catastrophes, striking Italy in the post-war period. We considered the territory as a unit, made up of geographical, geological, social, historical and urban aspects, proposing nine papers with reflections and readings on these aspects. These reflections concern the geological and structural context in which the Belice earthquake occurred, such as the novelties proposed by the most recent research in geological, geophysical, geochemical and geodetic fields, but also themes and reflections on the impact that the earthquake has had on the Italian and Sicilian societies, on their housing and infrastructural contexts, on the history of our Country. This issue fosters a contamination among different disciplines, reflecting the complexity of the impact that an earthquake has on any territory. In Barreca et al., we find new insights from the analysis of geological and geodetic data, aimed to the definition of the active faults potentially involved in the 1968 seismic events and, probably, also involved in two earthquakes hitting the ancient city of Selinunte. The monitoring of aquifers in the south-western Sicily is debated by Favara et al., who explored the potential of geochemical monitoring of the Santa Ninfa karst system, and by Madonia and Madonia, with a specific investigation of the Santa Ninfa cave. Another interesting aspect is depicted by Camarda et al., who studied the CO2 flux from the soil as a useful instrument for the detection of active faults and fractures in south-western Sicily. Azzaro et al, in the paper titled “A reappraisal of the 1968 Valle del Belìce seismic sequence (western Sicily): a case study of intensity assessment with cumulated damage effects”, discuss an important argument about the difficulties in determining the correct intensities when repeated earthquakes occur in the same area, and apply a technique of investigation already used for the 2016-2017 sequence in Central Italy. In the paper of Azzaro et al. titled “Earthquakes and ghost towns in Sicily: from the Valle del Belice in 1968 to the Val di Noto in 1693. The first stage of the virtual seismic itinerary through Italy” the authors describe a virtual tour (contained in a DVD) through the “ghost towns” in Sicily, which are the villages destroyed by natural events and later abandoned. In De Lucia et al. we find a pilot study on the demographic perspective of the impact of 1968 Belice and 1980 Irpinia-Basilicata earthquakes on local communities, with interesting arguments about the relationship between the marginality of these territories and their vulnerability. The two remaining papers report specific investigation on the hard and controversial reconstruction of the Valle del Belice villages destroyed by the earthquake. In Pappalardo and Martinico we find a general investigation on the underutilization of the reconstructed dwellings, with some reflections on the guidelines for the revitalization of these area, from a town planning perspective, and taking into account the present and future challenges for residents and local authorities, facing the risk of a progressive abandonment of these settlements. Finally, in Caponetto and D’Urso it is possible to find an innovative approach to the revitalization of an abandoned village (Poggioreale) in a touristic perspective. 1 References Barreca G., V. The Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia – Osservatorio Etneo (INGV-OE) manages a permanent local seismic network in Eastern Sicily, with the aim of monitoring the main tectonic areas (Iblei, Peloritani) and active Sicilian volcanoes (Etna, Vulcano, Stromboli). This network enables locating low magnitude earthquakes and detecting low energy signals that are typical of active volcanic areas (e.g. volcanic tremor, explosion quakes, LP events). Apart from Mt. Etna and the Aeolian islands, another area characterized by active volcanism is the Sicily Channel, with the volcanic edifices of Pantelleria and Linosa islands. The emergence (and subsequent disappearance after about two months) in 1831 of the Ferdinandea island, as well as the Foerstner island in 1891 (about 4 km north of Pantelleria), is the most reliable and recent evidence of volcanism in the Sicily Channel, which is undersea for the most part (Fig. 1). Since there are only a few onshore areas in the Sicily Channel, it is therefore difficult to instrumentally detect its seismicity with traditional onshore networks, with the exception of locating the foci of high-energy earthquakes, which often have poor azimuthal constraints.

We adopt in this project a multi-disciplinary approach with the goal of addressing the following points: 1) define the active tectonic framework of south- western Sicily, 2) investigate and characterize on-shore and off-shore faults, potential sources of damaging earthquakes, and 3) evaluate the current deformation rates. To do this, we collected a new set of geodetic (GPS and InSAR) and geochemical data, and performed geological and geomorphological surveys on-land in the area between Mazara, Castelvetrano and Selinunte.

  • LA FAMIGLIA the Ideology of Sicilian Family Networks
LA FAMIGLIA The Ideology of Sicilian Family Networks Eva Carlestål LA FAMIGLIA The Ideology of Sicilian Family Networks Dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Cultural Anthropology presented at Uppsala University in 2005 ABSTRACT Carlestål, Eva, 2005. La Famiglia – The Ideology of Sicilian Family Networks. DICA, Disser- tations in Cultural Anthropology, 3. 227 pp. Uppsala. ISSN 1651-7601, ISBN 91-506-1791-5. Anthropological data from fieldwork carried out among a fishing population in western Sicily show how related matrifocal nuclear families are tightly knit within larger, male-headed networks. The mother focus at the basic family level is thereby balanced and the system indi- cates that the mother-child unit does not function effectively on its own, as has often been argued for this type of family structure. As a result of dominating moral values which strong- ly emphasise the uniqueness of family and kin, people are brought up to depend heavily upon and to be loyal to their kin networks, to see themselves primarily as parts of these social units and less so as independent clearly bounded individuals, and to distinctly separate family members from non-family members. This dependence is further strengthened by matri- and/or patrivicinity being the dominant form of locality, by the traditional naming system as well as a continual use of kin terms, and by related people socialising and collaborating closely. The social and physical boundaries thus created around the family networks are further streng- thened by local architecture that symbolically communicates the closed family unit; by the woman, who embodies her family as well as their house, having her outdoor movements restric- ted in order to shield both herself and her family; by self-mastery when it comes to skilfully calculating one's actions and words as a means of controlling the impression one makes on others; and by local patriotism that separates one's co-villagers from foreigners.

There have been some critical issues in the intensity assessment however in the macroseismic studies produced over the years , since the MCS scale was used as an estimation of shaking rather than a representation of the damage scenario; in practise, intensity was assigned for each earthquake of the sequence disregarding the effect of the cumulative damage. The case-study of the 2016-17 earthquakes in Central Italy reflected the difficulty in estimating the intensity in localities repeatedly hit by strong shocks, producing macroseismic parameters (epicentre, magnitude) inconsistent with the instrumental ones. As for the 1968 Valle del Belìce sequence, the Parametric Catalogue of Italian Earthquakes CPTI15 reports the macroseismic parameters, owing to the inadequacy of the seismic network operating in Italy in that period.

In this walk between the ruins, we ask to ourself a question: what happens to a region where a tragic event of considerable magnitude becomes the main attraction of the place? We will try to understand the processes and dynamics that were generated in this territory, how they were caused or catalyzed by the events of the past, and why they became the historical memory of the place. Memory as a new cultural and tourist resource Keywords: identity, landscape, memory, monument, past. Introduction "The interest and the aesthetic pleasure of disasters assumes great importance for the ability to destroy, by the power that triggers in the transformation of a territory, for the disorder that occurs at a psychological leve.". Milani, R, The Art of Landscape. There are such intense places that, when facing with them, nobody can be indifferent by the wealth and variety that they represent. All we can do is to slow down our trip and stop to take a new rhythm and begin to travel by discovering. Sicily has been historically a crossing site and a conquerors' land because of its geographic context in the Mediterranean region. A land which is simultaneously isolated and a union bond.
