References in Potpourris: ‘Artificial Fragments’ and Paratexts in Mauro Giuliani’s Le Rossiniane Opp. 119–123 Francesco Teopini Terzetti Casagrande, Hong Kong The early-nineteenth-century guitar virtuoso Mauro Giuliani (1781– 1829) was a master of the potpourri, a genre of which the main characteristic is the featuring of famous opera themes in the form of musical quotations. Giuliani’s Le Rossiniane comprises six such potpourris for guitar, composed at the time when Rossini was the most famous operatic composer in Europe; they are acknowledged as Giuliani’s chef-d’oeuvre in this genre. Through an investigation of the original manuscripts of Le Rossiniane No. 3, Op. 121, and No. 5, Op. 123, I consider that Giuliani, apparently in order to be fully understood by both performers and audiences, wanted to overtly reference these musical quotations; and that he left various paratextual clues which in turn support the validity of my observations. Utilizing both music and literary theory my analysis investigates and categorizes three types of peritextual elements adopted by Giuliani in order to classify and reference the quoted musical themes in Le Rossiniane for both performers and the public: title, intertitle, and literal note. Further investigation of these works also leads to the hypothesis that each of Giuliani’s musical quotations, called in this paper artificial fragments, can be considered as a further, and essential referential element within the works. At the beginning of the nineteenth century the making of potpourris was the quickest way to compose ‘new’ and successful music. Carl Czerny (1791–1857) stated that the public of that time “experience[d] great delight on finding in a composition some pleasing melody […] which it has previously heard at the Opera […] [and] when […] introduced in a spirited and brilliant manner […] both the composer and the practiced player can ensure great success” (1848 online: 86).

In the arias and scenes that follow, we witness characters in just this kind of moment; searching for meaningful contact yet being somehow barred from achieving it. Through circumstance, distance, convention, misunderstanding, pride, fear, ego, or what have you, we may find ourselves in situations similar to the characters in this program, while looking forward to the days when connection can be more easily achieved and separation the exception to the rule.

BEST, CONDUCTOR • 'I SOLOIST ADELAIDE ANilERSON WAYNE, pianist Mountain Home Air Force Base April 20 9 196o :S~ise Junior College Auditorium April 229 1960 PROGRAM NOTES The opera "11 Signor Bruschino" is a farcical one-act work composed in revenge for an ugly joke played upon Rossini by the manager of the San Moise theater in Venice. Having a grudge against Rossini, the manager compelled him to fuliill an earlier agree ment for an opera, but supplied him with an impossible libretto. Treating the libretto seriously would have been disastrous, but the ready-witted Rossini turned the situation to his advantage by burlesquing the musical treatment. Introduced into the score are all sorts of outrageous pranks, the obvious one in the overture being the times when the second violin players are asked to strike their desks with the bow. This bagatelle of an overture is certainly not heard as frequently as the "Barber of Seville" or "William Tell" but in Romatic opera it stands as a miracle of conciseness. Anton Dvorak (1841-1904) began his life in poverty and obscurity, as the son of a butcher, and ended it in affluence and fame as one of the most celebrated composers of his day. The transition was of his own working, and was accomplished against formidable odds. Brahms had a hand in it, but it is not quite true that he 'discovered' Dvorak, who already was the recipient of a pension from the Ministry of Culture in Vienna. The Third Symphony is another example of a little-known work by a well known composer, yet it reveals a folkish type of freshness that is not always present in the much-performed "New World" Symphony.

• Summer 2021 NEWSLETTER : BULLETIN Été 2012 Handel’S the Resurrection - a New Production for a New Era Opera Atelier in 2021 by Lesley Robinson
Société d' Opéra National Capital de la Capitale Nationale Opera Society Summer 2021 NEWSLETTER : BULLETIN Été 2012 Handel’s The Resurrection - a New Production for a New Era Opera Atelier in 2021 by Lesley Robinson After more than a year of re-runs and old favourites, I am absolutely thrilled to be writing about a brand-new production. When Ontario went into a lockdown in March 2020, the production was officially cancelled. At that time, the set had been built, the costumes were almost ready and rehearsals had begun. Instead of just shutting everything down and waiting for things to get back to “normal”, Toronto’s Opera Atelier chose to create something new and exciting. Rather than bemoaning what was not possible, they focused on new ways to present their traditional, classic, baroque content. Atelier’s production of The Resurrection is a film, which was streamed online over a limited period for their audience. They sold tickets, just as they would for a regular production and provided an online libretto, translation and program book. The creators’ task was to reimagine a production, whilst remaining true to the work. They looked back to the roots of the piece which was first performed in Rome in 1708 in the grand hall of a palace. Without the constraints of a regular theatrical auditorium and in keeping with the premiere, they decided to film The Resurrection in the Ballroom of St. Lawrence Hall. Everything was done in strict accordance with pandemic guidelines and when the appropriately socially distanced artists of the Atelier Ballet appeared in their protective masks, I was immediately struck by the impression that this was a whole new take on a masked ball.
