Like the very similar Cranston-Magnuson-Spong bill, s. 4344, it has been re£erred to the Senate Commerce Committee where we hope £or action as soon as possible. In emphasizing the need tor the bill, Senator Dole spoke from personal experience remarking that, "Senators would be amazed at the conditions under which some animals are trans ported £rom one location to another - whether ror sale or exhibition. This law would put a stop to the abuse or these animals." PLEASE WRITE TODAY TO YOUR CONGRESSMAN AND BOTH YOUR SENATORS URGING THEIR SUPPORT FOR THE ANIMAL WELFARE ACT OF 1970. Urge the support of the Senate Commerce Committee tor The Animal Welfare Act ot 1970, s. 4539, and the similar s. 4344, both of which OVER · Page 4 of 6 would broaden the existing Laboratory Animal Welfare Act, P.L. 89-544, to authorize the Secretary of Agriculture to set humane standards for all kinds of war.m-blooded animals throughout their stay in the labora tory, in zoos, circuses, animal dealers' premises, and the wholesale pet industry. The legislation requires appropriate use of analgesic and tranquilizing drugs for laboratory animals. It strengthens en forcement provisions and sets stiff penalties for animal dealers who have tried to keep the dedicated inspectors of the u.s. Department of Agriculture off their premises by threatening them and sometimes actu ally shooting at them. This legislation must be passed! Please keep writing till The Animal Welfare Act of 1970 is the law. This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas.
