Area 51 Is the Internet's Latest Fascination. Here's Everything to Know About the Mysterious Site Area 51 Is the Internet's Latest Fascination. Here's Everything to Know About the Mysterious Site By Jasmine Aguilera July 17, 2019 Area 51 has been shrouded in mystery for decades, so it only makes sense that the rumored alien secrets held within the remote desert site would get a reboot in the social media age. The internet has been invaded by Area 51 memes inspired by a joke Facebook event to take over the secretive military site and find the supposed aliens kept inside . The event, called “Storm Area 51, They Can’t Stop All of Us,” is planned for Sept. 20, and so far 1.5 million people have signed on. As far back as the 1950s, people have reported seeing Unidentified Flying Objects (U.F.O.’s) at the southern Nevada military base. On June 17, 1959, the Reno Evening Gazette published a story with the headline “More Flying Objects Seen In Clark Sky,” and described how Sgt. Wayne Anderson of the local sheriff’s office was among several locals to spot what the paper described as an object “bright green in color and descending toward the earth at a speed too great to be an airplane.” According to the CIA, secretive flight testing has been happening in the area since the military began testing U-2 CIA spy planes in 1955, around the time reports of U.F.O. sightings started to come out — but that news has done little to quell the otherworldly theories that have long surrounded the enigmatic site. Here’s everything to know about the history of Area 51, and why more than a million people want to “see them aliens.” What is Area 51? Area 51, officially named the Nevada Test and Training Range at Groom Lake, is a high- security open training range for the U.S. Air Force in southern Nevada — though the site is still very secretive. The public found out that Area 51 officially existed in August 2013 after Dr. Jeffrey T. Richelson, a senior fellow at the George Washington University National Security Archive, submitted a Freedom of Information Act Request in 2005 for information on the CIA’s 1/3 The National Security Archive, 2130 H Street, NW, Suite 701, Washington, DC 20037 www.nsarchive.org Lockheed U-2 plane reconnaissance program, the secret construction and testing of spy planes used to gather intelligence. The request forced the CIA to declassify documents on the history of the U-2 and A-12 OXCART program and the military base where the planes were constructed and tested — Area 51. “There certainly was — as you would expect — no discussion of little green men here,” Richelson, who died in 2017, told The New York Times in 2013. “This is a history of the U-2. The only overlap is the discussion of the U-2 flights and U.F.O. sightings, the fact that you had these high-flying aircraft in the air being the cause of some of the sightings.” Malcolm Byrne, Deputy Director and Director of Research at the National Security Archive, tells TIME that Richelson essentially solved the mystery surrounding Area 51 indirectly. “I don’t think Richelson was going after Area 51 specifically, it’s just that as often happens in these things, there’s serendipity and so material gets released that has things of interest for other people.” What is the proposed “raid”? In a pinned post on Facebook event’s page, Jackson Barns, who says he created the joke event, details his tongue-in-cheek plan to invade Area 51. It involves Monster energy drinks, “Kyles” (the internet name for white men and boys who have anger issues and punch drywall) and Naruto-running, inspired by a Japanese anime show. “Then the Rock Throwers will throw pebbles at the inevitable resistance (we don’t want to hurt them, we just want to annoy them enough to not shoot the kyles as often),” Barns writes, before making it clear that he does not advocate this plan actually coming to fruition. “P.S. Hello US government, this is a joke, and I do not actually intend to go ahead with this plan. I just thought it would be funny and get me some thumbsy uppies on the internet.” So far, 1.5 million people from all over the world have signed on to join the “raid,” and the event has inspired a mega-viral meme. Even rapper Lil Nas X released a new music video for his hit “Old Town Road” that features cowboys raiding Area 51. How has the government responded to the raid? A spokesperson for the U.S. Air Force told several media outlets that they are aware of the plans to “raid” Area 51 — and are staunchly against them. “Any attempt to illegally access the area is highly discouraged,” an Air Force spokesperson told NPR in a Monday statement, along with several other media outlets. 2/3 “[Area 51] is an open training range for the U.S. Air Force, and we would discourage anyone from trying to come into the area where we train American armed forces,” Air Force spokeswoman Laura McAndrews told The Washington Post. “The U.S. Air Force always stands ready to protect America and its assets.” The Air Force did not immediately respond to TIME’s request for comment. Why has Area 51 become the subject of so many conspiracy theories? When Sgt. Anderson told the Reno Evening Gazette (now known as the Reno Gazette-Journal) about spotting a U.F.O. back in 1959, the outlet also reported that the Nellis Air Force Base, located about 130 miles south of Area 51, had received two previous reports in the past three weeks of U.F.O. sightings. Those reports came just a few years after rumors of a U.F.O. crashing in Roswell, New Mexico in 1947, which the Roswell Army Air Field later said was a weather balloon. The Air Force began investigating claims of U.F.O. sightings in 1947, which later became known as Project Blue Book in 1952. By the time Project Blue Book ended in 1969, the Air Force had investigated over 12,000 claims. Meanwhile, people in the southern Nevada region continued to report U.F.O. sightings, which in hindsight were probably sightings of the top-secret spy planes being constructed. Even so, imaginations have run wild ever since. Area 51 references have also seeped into pop culture, making appearances in movies like Independence Day and Paul. It has also inspired episodes of The Twilight Zone and The X-Files, as well as the slightly less iconic straight-to-video film Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders. • Extraterrestrial Life Craft Instructions
What’s Fact and Fiction @ Area 51? Area 51 is a secret United States Air Force military base located at Groom Lake in Southern Nevada and was built in 1955. This facility has been the focus of many conspiracy theories involving extraterrestrial life (alien lifeforms), though the official information confirms the base as being a flight-testing facility. The official name for Area 51 is the Nevada Test and Training Range. The name, Area 51, came from its geo- graphical location on a map. Aerial photo of Area 51 Gate at Area 51 Some people believe that Area 51 is a site where government officials have performed experiments with extrater- restrials and their spacecrafts. Others believe that the moon landing in 1969 was fake and was filmed right here on Earth at Area 51. Over the years the CIA, Air Force, and aerospace company Lockheed Martin, have all used Area 51 as a staging ground for test flights of experimental aircraft. According to documents declassified in 2007, in the 1950s and 1960s Area 51 was used as a site for top-secret Cold War-era program known as Oxcart. The purpose of Oxcart’s program was to develop a spy plane that would be undetectable in the air and could be used for gathering information on the Soviet Union. This spy-place called the Archangel-12, was eventually developed at Area 51. The A -12 could travel speeds of more than 2,000 miles an hour and take clear pictures of objects on the ground from high altitudes. These spy planes developed at Area 51 may resemble people’s idea of what alien spacecrafts could look like, which helps explain why so many people reported UFO sightings in the skies above Nevada over the years.

  • NCAS Presentation[9985]
NCAS Presentation September 8, 2018 January 8, 1969, was a red-letter day for the Air Force. That was the date that we took possession of the University of Colorado’s “Scientific Study of Unidentified Flying Objects.” The Condon Report, as it was popularly known, was the result of 18 months of intensive scientific inquiry into a phenomenon that plagued the Air Force for more than 20 years – UFOs or Flying Saucers. There I was at the Pentagon south parking loading dock with a hand truck to load 40 cartons containing 225 copies of the report. I headed straight for Bert Goodwin’s office on the Pentagon’s 4th floor. Goodwin was a civilian attorney responsible for protecting the Air Force’s legal interests regarding the Condon Report. It was just after 3 p.m. as I wheeled into Goodwin’s office. No one in the Air Force had seen the report as yet. Bert and I had one hour to review the 3-volume, 1465-page report. Forty- two copies were to be made available to the Pentagon press corps at 4 p.m., embargoed for simultaneous release in Washington and Boulder, Colorado, at noon EST the next day. Goodwin and I were the first Air Force officials to lay eyes on the report. The Air Force had been scrupulous, almost paranoid, about taking pains to avoid seeing the Condon Report until it was ready for public release. As we quickly skimmed the report, it became obvious that Dr. Condon hadn’t found evidence of any little green men.

  • A Longitudinal Analysis of Youtube's Promotion of Conspiracy Videos
A longitudinal analysis of YouTube’s promotion of conspiracy videos Marc Faddoul1, Guillaume Chaslot3, and Hany Farid1,2 Abstract Conspiracy theories have flourished on social media, raising concerns that such content is fueling the spread of disinformation, supporting extremist ideologies, and in some cases, leading to violence. Under increased scrutiny and pressure from legislators and the public, YouTube announced efforts to change their recommendation algorithms so that the most egregious conspiracy videos are demoted and demonetized. To verify this claim, we have developed a classifier for automatically determining if a video is conspiratorial (e.g., the moon landing was faked, the pyramids of Giza were built by aliens, end of the world prophecies, etc.). We coupled this classifier with an emulation of YouTube’s watch-next algorithm on more than a thousand popular informational channels to obtain a year-long picture of the videos actively promoted by YouTube. We also obtained trends of the so-called filter-bubble effect for conspiracy theories. Keywords Online Moderation, Disinformation, Algorithmic Transparency, Recommendation Systems Introduction social media 21; (2) Although view-time might not be the only metric driving the recommendation algorithms, YouTube By allowing for a wide range of opinions to coexist, has not fully explained what the other factors are, or their social media has allowed for an open exchange of relative contributions. Into the storm Uncovering the narrative of QAnon Ioana Frincu (s1904914) University of Twente BSc. Communication Science Supervisor Menno de Jong “I think that the people who approach the social sciences with a ready-made conspiracy theory thereby deny themselves the possibility of ever understanding what the task of the social sciences is, for they assume that we can explain practically everything in society by asking who wanted it, whereas the real task of the social sciences is to explain those things which nobody wants, such as, for example, a war, or a depression“ (Popper, 2002, p. 168) 1 Abstract The alarming growth of QAnon, a conspiracy theory group, is just the tip of an complex issue which is dividing the world. From conspiracy theories shared on internet to storming Capitol Hill and disrupting the public and political discourse, QAnon quickly become a major threat in the real world. Nevertheless, there is still a limited understanding of its anatomy, characteristic and who are the followers, especially within academia. To address the gap, I will attempt to uncover the narrative of QAnon and its characteristics as the main focus of this research. Conducting a content analysis on 6, 432 posts from Q drops, 8kun, r/QAnon_Casualties and r/Qult_Headquarters implies taking into consideration two opposite perspective: the QAnon insider view and the outsider perspective that takes an anti-QAnon stand. The results are pointing out to an engaging “good vs evil” fight behind the movement as well as cult behavior and a goal to discredit any authority, among others. The conclusion contains several unexplored paths for future research and practical advice to the public and institutions about how to make sense of QAnon.

By Andrew Panay Division of Sociology University of Abertay Dundee 158 Marketgait House Dundee DD1 3NJ Scotland 1 From Little Big Man to Little Green Men : The Captivity Scenario in American Popular Culture Abstract: This paper seeks to link the seemingly diverse genres of the Indian captivity narrative and the alien abduction scenario. Both types it is argued share common narrative constructions and themes. Whilst the Indian captivity narrative is plainly derived from first hand accounts and can demonstrate a historical development based on the actuality of the experiences it describes, the alien abduction scenario though protesting its objective basis cannot. Rather than rejecting the validity of the alien abduction scenario on this account, the following attempts to account for the claims to reality of the alien abduction narrative by arguing that it exists in a historical continuum with the Indian captivity narrative. The Indian captivity narrative develops historically to provide a cultural text through which Americans understand their historical situation as colonial settlers of frontier territories. The narrative functions as part of a greater historical myth system in which national values of community safety and security, national progress and vitality and the preservation of core values against hostile enemies are central components.
