Historical in terms of its research methodology, and mathematical-pedagogical in terms of the objects of the study, this research explores and compares the Albanian high school mathematics graduate examinations during 1970s and 2006 – 2015: two decades during two different historical periods. It analyzes the general structure of the examinations, their mathematical task design, and the history of their changes under the influence of political and social processes. The units of analysis here are the questions of each examination, which are examined both individually and in context as part of the examination, investigating the examinations’ topic coverage and comparing the latter to the intended national curriculum. This study was based on multiple primary sources, including documents from the Albanian Ministry of Education, the Central State Archive of the Republic of Albania, the Internet archive (http://www.arsimi.gov.al), memoirs of former teachers, high school textbooks during the respective years, and other sources.

  • The Role of the Albanian Diaspora (In the U.S.) on the Declaration of Independence of Albania
European Scientific Journal UDC No. 323.1(496.5):325.25(73:=18) The role of the Albanian Diaspora (in the U.S.) on the Declaration of Independence of Albania Rudina Mita, Phd University of Elbasan “Aleksander Xhuvani”, Albania The fall of the Albanian League of Prizren and the very difficult economic situation forced hundreds and thousands of Albanians to flee outside the borders of Albania and even further than that, outside the borders of the Ottoman Empire. Most of them migrated to Romania, Bulgaria, Egypt, Russia and the USA, countries where the former old colonies of Albanians could be found. Taking into consideration the difficult and severe conditions of Albania, in the context of the national development movement and the implementation of its platform for the development of the Albanian education and culture, an important role at the time was played by the Albanian Diaspora. Its role had already escalated to the creation, joining and unification of societies and clubs. Such was the case of the creation of the Federation “Panshqiptare Vatra” in the United States. The activities of its representatives in the countries where the federation was active were legal and in favourable political conditions. Their political goals were quite clear and the two main objectives were the liberation from slavery and the preservation of the territorial entirety of the Albanian lands. The political activity of the Diaspora developed within so called societies or cultural clubs, which was clearly expressed in their statutes. This political activity was obvious in the press of time, according to which this was happening in order to make use (in favour of the Albanian movements) of the available legal means, as well as to avoid any possible obstacles that could come out from the governmental authorities under the pressure of the Ottoman government to the authorities where these societies and clubs were operating.

ICRAE2014 Conference- Paper Proceedings, ISSN: 2308-0825 THE CONGRESS OF ELBASAN AND ITS ATTITUDE TOWARD ELBASANISHT Manola Myrta Faculty of Education“ Aleksander Moisiu “University Durres, Albania. E mail: [email protected] Abstract The Congress of Elbasan is a valuable institution, which stands alongside all the other organisms, which discussed, not only general problems related to Albanian and the widespread of education in Albania, but also to an existential problem of Albanian: the Albanian unification and the foundation of standard Albanian. As it is known, the Literary Committee of Shkodra decided the central Gheg dialect as the basis of common Albanian. However, the idea of putting Elbasanisht as standard language has been even earlier. The data tell us that this issue was discussed earlier in 1909 in the Congress of Elbasan. One of the decisions, which this congress decided, was to use the Elbasanisht as the basis of a common variant of Albanian, as a variant which is understandable by all Albanians. Was the decision supported at that time? Who were the main representatives who supported this idea? What was the attitude of the foreign authorities on this decision? Was this issue reflected in the press of that time? Was this problem reflected in the writings of foreign personalities? This study aims to highlight the goals of the Congress of Elbasan and to give a general picture of the reality on which the decision was made, to establish Elbasanisht as the basis of a common variant of Albanian. The focus of this study will also be the attitude of different foreign scholars about this decision, as well as the fact that this decision was presented in the correspondence of that time.

  • Albanian Language Management and the Generation of Kosovo Albanian National Identity Since 1945
ALBANIAN LANGUAGE MANAGEMENT AND THE GENERATION OF KOSOVO ALBANIAN NATIONAL IDENTITY SINCE 1945 JUSTIN GREGORY HAMILTON ELLIOTT University College London Doctor of Philosophy 2017 I, Justin Gregory Hamilton Elliott, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 ABSTRACT This thesis is about the development of a national identity through the means of language, both as a terrain and a vehicle. This thesis argues the modern intellectuals’ sense of moral mission in colonial nation-building was a response to exogenous modernization, and involved imagining the people as Albanians separated from Albania. This was most clearly encapsulated in the adoption of the same standard language as Albania in 1968 and the intellectuals’ subsequent management and reaction to external constraint, which was imposed in such a way as to prove counterproductive and enhance the intellectuals’ status still further. Yet, because there are limits to the way in which imagination of a society can conflict with reality, the standard language has failed to bring political or linguistic unity. In arguing this, the thesis provides a new interpretation of the development of Kosovo Albanian national identity. 3 TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction 4 Chapter One How the Modern Kosovo Albanian intellectual 57 became possible Chapter Two Writing as they hear: the Standardization of 95 Albanian in the People’s Republic of Albania Chapter Three Standard Albanian

KNOWLEDGE – International Journal Vol. 28.7 December, 2018 CONGRESS OF ELBASAN AND THE IMPORTANCE OF NORMAL (PEDAGOGICAL) SCHOOL Dorina Daiu University “Aleksander Xhuvani”, Elbasan, Albania, [email protected] Abstract: Throughout the history, teachers have played a crucial and missionary role in the preparation of generations as citizens of the future. Gratitude on teachers is definitely a patriotic obligation to them. In Albania, due to different historical, geographical and economic factors, teachers have worked and lived in difficult conditions. This is not only in the long periods of foreign conquests and in the period of the National Renaissance but also after the victory of Independence and the creation of an independent Albanian state. Most of them, as true missionaries, regardless of the conditions, devoted themselves to that noble silence, worked without a self-propelled for the nation, which always required renaissance. With and without appropriate school facilities, with difficult general conditions, with or without texts, with a lack of teaching resources, without guaranteed livelihoods, served in an exemplary manner to teach new generations the writing of Albanian language and to cultivate to the student knowledge and how to love their country. But when does the formation of teachers in Albania have the most significant institutional beginnings or developments? Through this paper I tried to bring into attention the decisions of the Congress of Elbasan in 1909 as the first Albanian Pedagogical Congress whose primary task was the opening of a Pedagogical School. This school would served in the institutionally studied preparation of teachers whose job at that time was a national emergency for the development of the Albanian nation.
