Announced by United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in January 1999, and formally launched at United Nations Headquarters in July 2000, the Compact calls on companies _ to embrace nine universal principles in the areas of human rights, labour standards and the environment. It brings companies together with United Nations organizations, international labour, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other parties to foster partnerships and to build a more inclusive and equitable global marketplace. It aims, in the,, words of Secretary-General Kofi Annan, to contribute to the emergence of "shared-values and principles, which-give.a ~ - human face to the global market." '." - The companies engaged in the Global Compact are diverse and represent different industries and-geographic regions. But they have two features in common: they are all leaders; and they all aspire to manage global growth in a ' responsible manner that takes into consideration the interests and concerns 0jF;fl broad spectrum of stakeholders - including employees, investors, customers, advocacy groups, business partners, and communities. Corporate leaders participating in the Global Compact agree that globalization, which only a few years ago was seen by many as an inevitable and unstoppable economic trend, in fact is highly fragile and may have an uncertain future. -

Part 2 Reform of the United Nations Reform of the United Nations During 1999, UN Secretary General Annan continued to move forward with his program of administrative and budgetary reforms. The 2000– 2001 UN budget came in at virtually the same level as the initial budget approved for the previous biennium, 1998–1999; administrative overhead costs were steadily reduced; and the Office of Internal Oversight Services identified millions of dollars in cost savings. Many of the Secretary General’s “Track One” and “Track Two” reforms were implemented, improving the efficiency of UN activities in the areas of development, humanitarian relief, human rights, and peace- keeping. By the end of 1999, however, the General Assembly had not yet acted on some other recommendations put forward by the Secretary Gen- eral that are priorities for the United States: results–based budgeting, which uses performance indicators to assess progress toward specific objectives, and sunset provisions for new UN programs. The United States continues to press for implementation of these measures. Apart from these efforts, discussions continued on reforming peace- keeping operations and possibly expanding the Security Council to 20 or 21 members, including permanent seats for Germany and Japan. Secretary General’s Reform Initiatives UN Secretary General Kofi Annan incorporated many U.S. ideas on improving UN economic and social institutions, activities, and programs into his two 1997 reform packages (“Track One” and “Track Two” reforms). The United States worked to generate member state support for their prompt implementation. In December 1997, the General Assembly adopted the Track One measures and most of the Track Two recommenda- tions by consensus. -

Failure to submit acceptable closeout reports for an existing grant within 90 calendar days following the grant end date may result in exclusion from future AMS grant opportunities. This final report will be made available to the public once it is approved by FMLFPP staff. Write the report in a way that promotes your project's accomplishments, as this document will serve as not only a learning tool, but a promotional tool to support local and regional food programs. Particularly, recipients are expected to provide both qualitative and quantitative results to convey the activities and accomplishments of the work. The report is due within 90 days of the project’s performance period end date (as noted in box 15 of your grant agreement (AMS-33), or sooner if the project is complete. The report must be typed single‐ spaced in 11‐point font, not to exceed fifteen (15) 8.5 x 11 pages (excluding existing Final Performance Report form content). For example, if the Final Performance Report form is six (6) pages before you begin entering your project information into the form, your report may be up to 21 pages (6 pages + 15 pages). Provide answers to each question and all applicable outcome and indicators as it applies to your project. If you are unable to provide a response explain why. It is preferred that you email your completed performance report to your assigned FMLFPP Grants Management Specialist to avoid delays. -

Game of Thrones? – Davos, the download Mark Campanale, Tribe Impact Capital Fellow and Founder of the Carbon Tracker Initiative, reports back on his personal take from this year’s Davos. On arriving, you quickly come to understand that the World Economic Forum in Davos isn’t one event, but a series. Focused around the ‘official’ conference, global heads of corporations and governments gather: this is what we see covered on CNN or the BBC news networks. Outside this zone, a much larger muddle of NGO, policymakers and com- mentators gather, fighting for attention of both media and attendees. This parallel Davos is less well known, but is as jam-packed. And this is where I spent my week. The key to making Davos work for you is to learn how to navigate the complex network of parallel events, receptions and dinners. As there is no ‘programme’ to skim through, so working out where to be – and with whom - requires a good network. If fortune shines on you, attending events with just a ‘hotel pass’ (rather than the official ’basic’ at- tendance pass that can cost $50,000) can be and is often thoroughly rewarding. The schedule I created was focused on sustainability, financing the SDGs, climate change, sustainable food systems and yes - inevitably – what block chain will do to turn the world of business and finance on its head. If you like hopping between bars and hotel lobbies and dropping informally into wide ranging but thoughtful discus- sions (often with well-known public figures) then Davos is worth the hassle. -

Youth Unemployment Topic Summary: Many youth worldwide are struggling with finding formal employment opportunities, or are paid very low wages when they are working. In both developing and developed countries, there are gaps between formal education and employment. Youth in this case are usually between 15-24 years of age. According to the International Labor Organization, “young people are three times more likely to be unemployed than adults and almost 73 million youth worldwide are looking for work”. The ILO has cautioned and warned of a damaged generation of young workers facing a dangerous mix of high unemployment, increased inactivity and hazardous work in developed countries, as well as persistently high working poverty in the developing world. This could potentially lead to an economic crisis with a generation with little work experience, or opportunities to actually live a prosperous and developed life. Youth unemployment has many long-term penalties for the individual and for their country. Some individual consequences involve finding employment in unrelated or unfulfilling tracks. For some countries, high youth unemployment causes youth to leave the country in search of employment. High youth unemployment has also led to social unrest and political revolutions. Background Information: • 2000: UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, first proposes the Youth Employment Network. Following the Secretary-General’s initiative, Heads of State and Government, meeting at the Millennium Summit resolve to "develop and implement strategies that give young people everywhere a real chance to find decent and productive work." The Youth Employment Network becomes a vehicle for mobilizing action around the Millennium Commitment on decent and productive work for young people. -

Mark Malloch Brown Doctor Of Laws Mark Malloch Brown, as a journalist, political adviser, and World Bank official, you have worked with politicians and executives from across the globe to address the needs of people in developing countries. As administrator of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) since 1999, you have reformed the UN’s largest agency, raising more than $3 billion a year for programs to promote democracy, fight poverty, protect the environment, and address the impact of HIV/AIDS. Now as UN chief of staff you are helping the secretary- general lead a wide reform effort to modernize the UN. A British citizen, you received an honors degree in history from Cambridge University, and came to the United States to earn a master’s degree in political science from the University of Michigan. In 1977, you began work as a political correspondent for The Economist. You went on to found and edit the Economist Development Report, a monthly chronicle on the aid community and the political economy for development. From 1986 to 1994, you were lead international partner for the Sawyer-Miller Group, a consulting firm, where you advised corporations, governments, and political candidates. In this role, you worked on many campaigns across the developing world, including successfully advising Corazon Aquino when she ran against Ferdinand Marcos for the president of the Philippines. You began working for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in 1979. Initially stationed in Thailand, you were in charge of field operations for Cambodian refugees. Later, as deputy chief of the emergency unit in Geneva, you undertook missions in the Horn of Africa and Central America. -

Event Summary Title: Leading Change in United Nations Organizations, Informal Dialogue with Ms. Catherine Bertini Venue: Auditorium, WFP Headquarters Date and Time: Friday, 13 December 2019, from 10:00-11:30 (a welcome coffee will be served from 9:30 in the Peace Garden) Language: English Description Join us as Ms. Catherine Bertini, former head of the World Food Programme (WFP), shares insights from her time in the United Nations system and her recently published report “Leading Change in United Nations Organizations”, which provides food for thought for incoming United Nations officials on a range of issues relating to leadership and change. Ms. Bertini will share a range of ideas, including on the key attributes of leadership in the United Nations, the transition from moving outside to inside the United Nations system, preparing for leadership positions, making difficult and principled decisions, and guidance for leading change. The Rome-based diplomatic community and the United Nations staff at all levels are welcome to attend this leadership moment. Summary of ideas Ms. Bertini wishes to present Drawing from her own experience as Executive Director of WFP for ten years, and later as United Nations Under- Secretary-General for Management and including comments from two dozen other former United Nations officials, Ms. Bertini describes key attributes about leadership with the United Nations. She discusses the transitions from outside to inside the United Nations, preparation for the position, leadership style, importance of United Nations staff, making difficult and principled decisions, and, ultimately, guidance for leading change.
