Beug: Chair, NAMA Toxicology Committee Assessing the degree of amatoxin mushroom poisoning in North America is very challenging. Understanding the potential for various treatment practices is even more daunting. Although I have been studying mushroom poisoning for 45 years now, my own views on potential best treatment practices are still evolving. While my training in enzyme kinetics helps me understand the literature about amatoxin poisoning treatments, my lack of medical training limits me. Fortunately, critical comments from six different medical doctors have been incorporated in this article. All six, each concerned about different aspects in early drafts, returned me to the peer reviewed scientific literature for additional reading. There remains no known specific antidote for amatoxin poisoning. There have not been any gold standard double-blind placebo controlled studies. There never can be. When dealing with a potentially deadly poisoning (where in many non-western countries the amatoxin fatality rate exceeds 50%) treating of half of all poisoning patients with a placebo would be unethical. Using amatoxins on large animals to test new treatments (theoretically a great alternative) has ethical constraints on the experimental design that would most likely obscure the answers researchers sought. We must thus make our best judgement based on analysis of past cases. Although that number is now large enough that we can make some good assumptions, differences of interpretation will continue. Nonetheless, we may be on the cusp of reaching some agreement. Towards that end, I have contacted several Poison Centers and NAMA will be working with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). -

Foster, [email protected] Abstract: Fungi are often inconspicuous in nature and this means it is all too easy to overlook their importance. Often referred to as the “Forgotten Kingdom”, fungi are key components of life on this planet. The phylum Basidiomycota, considered to contain the most complex and evolutionarily advanced members of this Kingdom, includes some of the most iconic fungal species such as the gilled mushrooms, puffballs and bracket fungi. Basidiomycetes inhabit a wide range of ecological niches, carrying out vital ecosystem roles, particularly in carbon cycling and as symbiotic partners with a range of other organisms. Specifically in the context of human use, the basidiomycetes are a highly valuable food source and are increasingly medicinally important. In this review, seven main categories, or ‘roles’, for basidiomycetes have been suggested by the authors: as model species, edible species, toxic species, medicinal basidiomycetes, symbionts, decomposers and pathogens, and two species have been chosen as representatives of each category. -

The activity of phenolic acids is related to the presence of hydroxycarboxylic groups and their position on the aromatic ring. These are compounds commonly found in nature – they are present in many spe- cies of plants and fungi. In the world of higher fungi, they constitute the most numerous group among phenolic compounds. The most common phenolic acids in the world of fungi are caffeic acid, gallic acid, gentisic acid, ferulic acid, p–coumaric acid, p–hydroxybenzoic acid, protocate- chuic acid, vanillic acid, and a compound with a structure similar to phe- nolic acids – t–cinnamic acid. Phenolic acids found in fruiting bodies of mushrooms show, among others, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti- cancer properties. Beug: Chair, NAMA Toxicology Committee A recent rash of mushroom poisonings involving liver failure in Oregon prompted Michael Beug to issue the following photos and information on distinguishing the differences between the toxic Amanita smithiana and edible Matsutake and Catathelasma. Distinguishing the choice edible Amanita smithiana Amanita smithiana Matsutake (Tricholoma magnivelare) from the highly poisonous Amanita smithiana is best done by laying the stipe (stem) of the mushroom in the palm of your hand and then squeezing down on the stipe with your thumb, applying as much pressure as you can. Amanita smithiana is very firm but if you squeeze hard, the stipe will shatter. Matsutake The stipe of the Matsutake is much denser and will not shatter (unless it is riddled with insect larvae and is no longer in good edible condition). There are other important differences. The flesh of Matsutake peels or shreds like string cheese. Also, the stipe of the Matsutake is widest near the gills Matsutake and tapers gradually to a point while the stipe of Amanita smithiana tends to be bulbous and is usually widest right at ground level. The partial veil and ring of a Matsutake is membranous while the partial veil and ring of Amanita smithiana is powdery and readily flocculates into small pieces (often disappearing entirely). For most people the difference in odor is very distinctive. Most collections of Amanita smithiana have a bleach-like odor while Matsutake has a distinctive smell of old gym socks and cinnamon redhots (however, not all people can distinguish the odors). -

Elles deltok Fred Arild Grøneng, Hilde Gjørvad, Monica Bjørbekk Herremåltid i granskogen på Hjorteset Kartleggingsområde Målet for kartlegging var å sjå om det var spennande førekomstar av sopp i frå Hyen mot Strorebru i Flora.Her er registrert ein del edelauvskog men lite sopp. Eli Heiberg hadde ved hjelp av berggrunnskart funne interresante lokalitetar, men vi plukka og ut nokre ut frå ei visuell vurdering då me køyrde til Nesholmen leirstad Kartleggingsnotat 27, 2019 – Soppkartlegging i Gloppen 2019 2 av 9 som var base for kartlegginga.Området har vore lite kartlagt og det er svært spa rsomt med registreringar av storsopp frå kommunen. Gruppa undersøkte seks lokalitetar i løpet av helga. Funna er gjort tilgjengelege i artsobservasjoner, og fleire av deltakarane har i ettertid byrja å gjere eigne registreringar på sine respektive heimstadar.
