Fall is in the air! Aren't we that the Long, Hot Summer is about to come to an end? And, we in Blå fjell Lodge have some important events coming up..

First and foremost is your decision regarding the area of leadership in which you may be interested for the upcoming 2019-2020 term, either as an officer or on a committee. The participation of each member of the Lodge is vital to the life of your organization! Please make your wishes known to us for the presentation of the Slate of Officers at our Anniversary Dinner.

We were so pleased with our Anniversary Dinner at Jersey Lily's last year that we agreed to return there to celebrate our 22nd Anniversary on October 27. Kathy, once again, has planned some enjoyable games to fill the time between ordering and being served, and we look forward to your joining us!

Cultural Director Cheri Johnson will include the participation of more Blå fjell Lodge members in the upcoming Day at Faith Christian School. This will give you an opportunity to experience this fine Adopt-A-School program, which is surely one of the best things we do! Mark your calendar for November 9.

Speaking of school, this gem came from an elementary school student:

When you breathe, you inspire. When you do not breathe, you expire!

Submitted by Joann Barfield, Blå fjell Lodge Co-President/Membership Chair ======MINUTES OF SEPTEMBER

Following refreshments provided by Kathy, Joann, and Cheri, the meeting was called to order by Co-President Kathy Clark, with nine members and one guest present. Marilyn Barrier, a neighbor of Joann Barfield at Richfield, who is a prospective member, was introduced. The national anthems of Norway, Canada, and the United States were sung.

Cheri Johnson presented the Treasurer's Report, including a report of $68.23 in the Good Neighbor Purse; Cheri explained the purpose of the Purse, which hopefully will grow to an amount of $100 by Christmas, when it will be presented to a needy cause.

There was no Old Business. Kathy announced the following New Business: Kathy stated that a letter from the Co-Presidents has been mailed to all members detailing the opportunity for their participation in leadership positions for the upcoming 2019-2020 years; the deadline for volunteers for those positions is October 1, and the Slate of Officers for the November Election will be presented at the October meeting.

The October 27 Anniversary Dinner will be held, once again, at Jersey Lily's, and Kathy is preparing a Norwegian Trivia game for the event. The November 17 meeting (one week earlier than the usual fourth Saturday because of Thanksgiving weekend) will include a program on Iceland, Land of Fire and Ice, presented by Cheri Johnson and Joann Barfield.

Cheri announced the annual Santa Lucia Festival at St. Andrews Catholic Church will be held on Thursday, December 13; they expect participation by Blå fjell Lodge members.

Our annual Julefest will be held on Saturday, December 8, 1-3 pm, at College Church.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned, and we proceeded to the Nordic Auction/Yard Sale/Bake Sale (which reportedly earned $209.00!)

History and legend combine in the gripping tale of Hakon Haraldsson, a Christian boy who once fought for the High Seat of a Viking realm.

It is 935 A.D. and the North is in turmoil. King Harald Fairhair has died, leaving the High Seat of the realm to his murderous son, Erik Bloodaxe. To solidify his claim, Erik ruthlessly disposes of all claimants to his throne, save one: his youngest brother Hakon.

Erik's surviving enemies send a ship to Wessex, where the Christian King Athelstan is raising Hakon. Unable to avoid his fate, he returns to the Viking North to face his brother and claim his birthright, only to discover that victory will demand sacrifices beyond his wildest nightmares.

In , Mjölnir is the hammer of , the Norse god associated with thunder. Mjölnir is depicted in Norse mythology as one of the most fearsome and powerful weapons in existence, capable of leveling mountains. Thor was the god who tirelessly protected Åsgård against the giants, who represented chaos and destruction.

The hammer was his most important weapon in this war. The name tor has its origin in ur-Germanic language and stands closely similar words that mean thunder. Thor was thus the personified force behind thunder and lightning. Thunder was the sound of his hammer that broke enemies.

Thor’s hammer was without doubt a powerful weapon, the strongest of all Norse gods had, but it was also much more. In rituals, it was a symbol of protection and sanctification. It was used in formal ceremonies ranging from poems, births and births funerals.

The Creation of Thor’s Hammer: One day, the trickster found himself in an especially mischievous mood and cut off the gorgeous golden hair of , the wife of Thor. When Thor learned of this, his quick temper was enraged, and he seized Loki and threatened to break every bone in his body. Loki pleaded with the thunder god to let him go down to Svartalfheim, the cavernous home of the dwarves, and see if those master craftspeople could fashion a new head of hair for Sif, this one even more beautiful than the original. Thor allowed this, and off Loki went to Svartalfheim.

There Loki was able to obtain what he desired. The sons of the Ivaldi forged not only a new head of hair for Sif, but also two other marvels: Skidbladnir, the best of all ships, which always has a favorable wind and can be folded up and put into one’s pocket, and , the deadliest of all spears.

Having accomplished his task, Loki was overcome by an urge to remain in the caves of the dwarves and revel in more recklessness. He approached the brothers Brokkr and and taunted them saying that he was sure the brothers could never forge three new creations equal to those the had fashioned. In fact, he even bet his head on their lack of ability. Brokkr and Sindri, however, accepted the wager.

As they worked, a fly (who, of course, was none other than Loki in disguise) stung Sindri’s hand. When the dwarf pulled his creation out of the fire, it was a living boar with golden hair. This was , who gave off light in the dark and could run better than any horse, even through water or air.

Sindri then set another piece of gold on the fire as Brokkr worked the bellows. The fly bit Brokkr on the neck, and Sindri drew out a magnificent ring, . From this ring, every ninth night, fall eight new golden rings of equal weight. Sindri then put iron on the hearth, and told Brokkr that, for this next working, they must be especially meticulous, for a mistake would be more costly than with the previous two projects. Loki immediately stung Brokkr’s eyelid, and the blood blocked the dwarf’s eye, preventing him from properly seeing his work. Sindri produced a hammer of unsurpassed quality, which never missed its mark and would boomerang back to its owner after being thrown, but it had one flaw: the handle was short. Sindri lamented that this had almost ruined the piece, which was called Mjölnir. Nevertheless, sure of the great worth of their three treasures, Sindri and Brokkr made their way to Åsgård to claim the wages that were due to them. Loki made it to the halls of the gods before the dwarves and presented the marvels he had acquired. To Thor he gave Sif’s new hair and the hammer Mjölnir. To went the ring Draupnir and the spear Gungnir. And was the happy recipient of Skidbladnir and Gullinbursti.

As grateful as the gods were to receive these gifts – especially Mjölnir, which they foresaw would be of inestimable help in their battles against the giants – they nevertheless concluded that Loki still owed the dwarves his head. When the dwarves approached Loki with knives, the cunning god pointed out that he had promised them his head, but not his neck. Brokkr and Sindri contented themselves with sewing Loki’s mouth shut, and returned to their forge.

BERGEN Bergen, historically Bjørgvin, is a city and municipality in Hordaland on the west coast of Norway. The city of Bergen was traditionally thought to have been founded by king Olav Kyrre, son of Harald Hardråde in 1070 AD, four years after the ended with the Battle of Stamford Bridge. Bergen is the second-largest city in Norway. The municipality covers 465 square kilometres (180 sq mi) and is on the peninsula of Bergenshalvøyen. The city centre and northern neighborhoods are on Byfjorden, 'the city fjord', and the city is surrounded by mountains; Bergen is known as the 'city of seven mountains'. Many of the extra-municipal suburbs are on islands. Bergen is the administrative centre of Hordaland, and consists of eight boroughs - Arna, Bergenhus, Fana, Fyllingsdalen, Laksevåg, Ytrebygda, Årstad, and Åsane.

Mount Ulriken trail

To reach the stunning, panoramic views of Bergen and the surroundings of Mount Ulriken, you can take the Ulriksbanen, a passenger aerial tramway to the top at a cost of 390 NOK or $60.

Hiking up Mount Ulriken, the highest of Bergen's seven mountains, is one of the most popular tours in Bergen. Starting at Montana Hostel, you have the choice of two trails. The locals hike the more difficult and steep trail as a part of their exercise routine. The less difficult trail is hiked mostly by the tourists. They are approximately the same length at 6.7 K and take about 1.5 hours. The hike offers great views all the way.

I like to think that exploration is in our blood from the time of the Vikings to Liv Arnesen and beyond. Who is Liv Arnesen you might ask?

Liv Ragnheim Arnesen (born June 1, 1953) is a Norwegian educator, cross– country skier, adventurer, guide, and motivational speaker. Arnesen led the first unsupported women’s crossing of the Greenland Ice Cap in 1992. In 1994, she made international headlines becoming the first woman in the world to ski solo and unsupported to the South pole. – a 50-day expedition of 745 miles (1,200 km). Liv has worked with Ann Bancroft for approx. 20 years. They are both former teachers, and in 2000-01 they became the first women in the world to cross the Antarctic continent on skis. An amazing trip of 2765 km (1,717 miles). They used the expedition to market their curriculums; – An interdisciplinary about Antarctica and one called «Dare to Dream». They also have a curriculum called «Roads to Peace». Together they formed Bancroft Arnesen Explore so that they could share their dreams with millions of others. In 2012, they launched their most ambitious project, BAE Access Water, with an expedition on Ganges. In order to anchor teaching programs internationally, they have invited one woman from every continent to participate. To learn more about this amazing explorer look at the website: http://www.livarnesen.com

In this month we celebrate Leif Erickson Day. I would like to list some Notable Norwegian Explorers. Yes, we all know Leif Erickson, Thor Heyerdahl, Helge Ingstad and Roald Amundsen, but the list, though not complete, will give you an idea of the men and women who thirst for adventure. If you are unfamiliar with one or two of the names this would be a wonderful opportunity to present a program at your lodge on a particular unsung champion. Remembering that the Norway of today is as bold and with love of the great outdoors, No Horizon is so Far: An Extraordinary Journey across Antarctica. Ann Bancroft and Liv Arnesen. Sad News from Minnesota

The Pillsbury Doughboy died yesterday in Minneapolis of a yeast infection and traumatic complications from repeated pokes in the belly. He was 75.

Doughboy was buried in a lightly greased coffin.

Dozens of celebrities turned out to pay their respects, including Mrs. Butterworth, Hungry Jack, the California Raisins, Betty Crocker, the Hostess Twinkies, and Captain Crunch. The gravesite was piled high with flours. Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy and lovingly described Doughboy as a man who never knew how much he was kneaded.

Born and bread in Minnesota, Doughboy rose quickly in show business, but his later life was filled with turnovers. He was not regarded as a very smart cookie, wasting much of his dough on half-baked schemes.

Despite being a little flaky at times, he still was a crusty old man and served as a positive roll model for millions. Doughboy is survived by his wife, Play Dough, three children: John Dough, Jane Dough and Dosey Dough, plus they had one in the oven. He is also survived by his elderly father, Pop Tart.

The funeral was held at 3:50 for about 20 min.

If you smiled while reading this, please rise to the occasion and pass it on to someone having a crumby day and kneading a lift. ======MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR UPCOMING MEETINGS AND EVENTS
