Kim Jong Il Biography 1 KIM JONG IL BIOGRAPHY 1 KIM JONG IL BIOGRAPHY 1 Foreign Languages Publishing House Pyongyang, Korea Juche 94 (2005) ON PUBLISHING THE BIOGRAPHY OF KIM JONG IL Kim Jong Il was born at Mt. Paektu, the mountain associated with the noble cause of the Korean revolution, during the revolutionary struggle against Japanese imperialism. He grew up, leaving unique footprints in the sands of time. He became an assistant to President Kim Il Sung in the early 1960s, and was acclaimed as the successor to the President in the 1970s. Kim Jong Il developed Kim Il Sung’s Juche idea, and evolved the guidelines for the Korean revolution and the era of independence. Since the death of President Kim Il Sung, he has defended socialism in Korea by thwarting the manoeuvres of the allied imperialist forces to isolate and stifle the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. He has paved the way to build a great prosperous powerful nation under his Songun leadership of the revolution, and is leading the struggle to success. He has built up powerful and self-reliant defence forces, and opened up bright prospects for Korea becoming one again, on the basic principles of independent national reunification. Kim Jong Il is General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea, Chairman of the National Defence Commission of the DPRK, and Supreme Commander of the Korean People’s Army. The editorial staff are proud to publish the English translation version of the Biography of Kim Jong Il (3 volumes). Juche 94 (2005) 1 CONTENTS CHAPTER 1. PAEKTU, THE SACRED MOUNTAIN OF REVOLUTION Kim Jong Il was born at the Paektusan Secret Camp in the Sobaeksu Valley, Samjiyon County, Ryanggang Province, on February 16, 1942. Mt. Paektu is the ancestral mountain of Korea or the cradle of the nation’s 5,000-year-old civilization. From there the Great Paektu Mountain Range stretches over the Korean peninsula, to form a 750-mile-long stretch of beautiful land. Mt. Paektu, the symbol of Korea, is known as a sacred mountain because it was there that the Korean revolution struck its roots: Kim Il Sung organized and led the anti-Japanese revolution to victory from there. Several miles southeast of Janggun (general—Tr.) Peak on the top of Mt. Paektu soars Jong Il Peak, through which the sparkling Sobaek Stream flows down the valley. The Paektusan Secret Camp was situated in that valley. The Paektusan Secret Camp, which was set up in September 1936, was the headquarters of the Korean revolution until the country was liberated. The camp was made up of two log cabins, with the larger cabin serving as Headquarters. It was in the smaller cabin, with no formal address or number

175 Hyonsong for Yi, and Yi's own preface to the work. The final volume contains an epilogue written by Yi Shik. There had been other literary collections before Chibong yuso! that contained writings on various topics such as science, government and literature, but none were as extensive as this work. The contents of each volume are as follows: Volume one contains information regarding astronomy, the seasons and calendar, and natural disasters. Volume two details the geography of Chosen and of other countries. The third volume discusses the kingship, and military organisation and strategy. Volume four is devoted to descriptions and duties of various government positions. The fifth to seventh volumes deliberate the qualities of Confucianism, the Chinese classics and Chinese characters. Volumes eight to fourteen are devoted to various literary writings. Volume fifteen discusses various personages, upright moral behaviour and physical appearance. The sixteenth volume is devoted to language, and the seventeenth to human and miscellaneous affairs. In volume eighteen the arts and moral affairs are presented, and in volume nineteen palaces, dress customs and food are discussed. The twentieth and final volume relays information concerning plants, animals and insects. The work contains a total of 3 435 articles divided into twenty-five main categories and further sub-divided into 182 headings. As outlined above, the works covers a broad number of topics that heretofore had not been accomplished in a single work. Moreover, Chibong yusol marks a trend in Chosen academics towards practical study as opposed to empty theoretical works that dominated this time. The structure of this work served as the foundation for later works that continued the practical approach to scholarship such as Sangha sasol (Insignificant Explanations) written by Yi Ik (1682-1764), Sunoji ot Hong Manjong (1643-1725), Kogiim songnim (Past and Present Glossaries) by Yi Uibong (1733-1801) and Mulmyong yugo (Categorical Explanations of Names and Things) written by Yu Hili (1773-1837).

HISTORY OF REVOLUTIONARY ACTIVITIES OF CHAIRMAN KIM JONG IL PYONGYANG, KOREA JUCHE 104 (2015) HISTORY OF REVOLUTIONARY ACTIVITIES OF CHAIRMAN KIM JONG IL Foreign Languages Publishing House Pyongyang, Korea Juche 104 (2015) 1 PREFACE Kim Jong Il, who led the cause of the Juche revolution pioneered by Kim Il Sung along the road resplendent with victory, is the eternal General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea and the eternal Chairman of the National Defence Commission of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Already in the 1960s he started administering unique Songun-based revolutionary leadership, Songun politics, and in the mid-1970s he began to lead the overall affairs of the Workers’ Party of Korea, the Korean People’s Army and the state, thus bringing about a radical turn in all the sectors of the revolution and construction and ushering in a heyday of the era of the WPK under the banner of modelling the whole society on Kimilsungism. After the death of Kim Il Sung in the mid-1990s, he formulated the mode of Songun politics in a comprehensive way. By so doing, he frustrated the ever-more undisguised schemes of the US-led allied imperialist forces to isolate and stifle the DPRK, defended his socialist country reliably and opened a new era of building a thriving socialist country. Cherishing an ennobling sense of obligation to the destiny of his country and fellow people and the future of the Korean revolution, he provided a brilliant solution to the problem of inheriting leadership, the core in accomplishing the revolutionary cause.

KIM JONG IL BRIEF HISTORY Foreign Languages Publishing House Pyongyang, Korea Juche 87 (1998) Publishing Comrade Kim Jong Il’s Brief History Comrade Kim Jong Il, General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea, is the most faithful successor to the revolution- ary cause of Juche1, the Supreme Commander of the revolu- tionary armed forces of Korea and the great leader of the Workers’ Party of Korea and the Korean people. In the first days of his revolutionary activities he set it as his lifetime task to complete the cause of Comrade Kim Il Sung, the great leader of the Korean people, and has scored immortal exploits or the Party and the revolution, for the country and the people. The historical course of his leadership over the Workers’ Party of Korea has covered the arduous and trying period in which the internal and external situation of the revolution was very complex and the Party and the revolution were faced with tasks more difficult and enormous than ever before. In the arduous days when the fierce class struggle between socialism and capitalism was waged amid the protracted confrontation with the allied forces of imperialism of the world, Comrade Kim Jong Il, as the closest comrade and most faithful assistant of Comrade Kim Il Sung, has always held fast to the banner of socialism, the banner of the revolution, and turned misfortunes into blessings and adversities into favourable conditions, thus leading the Korean revolution to continuous upsurge and bril- liant victory. Through energetic ideological and theoretical activities he systematized Comrade Kim Il Sung’s revolutionary ideology into the ideology, theory and methodology of Juche, develop- ing it to be the immortal revolutionary banner of the era of independence.
