Email(2):[email protected] Page 1 Website:http://whitlock.castlewebs.net/wfa/index.htm It has been an eventful Fall and as I look out the window of my office the world is white from the 60cm of snow we received over the last two days. It is only the last week of November and we have already had two dumps of snow.

In between we had two howling wind storms, the first of which brought down half of a 50 year old maple on the house!! There is quite a bit of damage and we are slowly recovering from that. Our insurance company has been really good and they managed to have the huge tree trunk removed from the back bedroom and got the roof tarped to prevent water getting in. We now have a back door again although it is still boarded up until the siding can be replaced. The wall of the bedroom is in place and there is a wooden frame in place for the corner of the roof. Needless to say family history work was on hold for awhile while we cleared away masses of broken branches and pieces of wood.

No one was injured, the tree missed the power lines so we have heat and power. The animals were all okay, even the dog who lived in the room where the back door used to be. The llamas and donkeys have been having a field day eating all the tree debris strewn about the fields. We do not have a wood burning fireplace so one of the neighbours now has a whole winter’s supply of maple and birch logs. “It is an ill wind indeed that blows no one any good”. The neighbours were great as a whole gang arrived the evening of the storm to help out. Anyway those issues appear to be on their way to being resolved and there is nothing like a good steady snowfall to encourage staying indoors and working on the computer!!

There have been some interesting developments on the family history side of things. Following up on the article in the September 2006 issue regarding the two William Henry Whitlocks of South Carolina. Patricia Swaney has now sent in the death certificate (CERT1062) for William Henry Whitlock born August 14, 1843 in Anderson Co., South Carolina. The death certificate shows he died February 12, 1919 in Anderson Co., South Carolina and that his parents were Drew Whitlock and Anna Kelly. The next step will be to figure out how Drew Whitlock fits into the family and if he is different from the Drury & Nancy Whitlock who show in the 1870 census for Laurens Co., South Carolina and the 1880 census for Belton, Anderson Co., South Carolina.

I have been very pleased to hear from Jeff Buttifant of Wells, Somerset. Jeff is descended from my gggrandfather, Thomas Whitlock’s brother Henry Whitlock. Through one of those quirks of genealogical research, Myrtle (Madge) Johns of Hamilton, Ontario had sent me information on her Webber ancestors and noted the Henry Whitlock who married Elizabeth, the sister to her grandmother Mary Webber wife of Walter Madge of Meeth, . This was the 1960's and I was not able to place this Henry Whitlock. It was not until I heard from Jeff that I learned how closely Henry was related. Mrs. Johns died in 1977 but I know she would have been thrilled to know that, not only had we made the connection, but that her grandfather, Walter Madge was one of the witnesses at the marriage of Henry Whitlock and Elizabeth Madge in 1842 at Okehampton in Devon. I have sent Jeff a couple of the booklets that Mrs. Johns put together on the Whitlock and Webber families and he is in the process of filling in the blanks for a part of the family I did not even know existed.

While I don’t get much time to do research myself, I have been tempted by some of the websites that Michael Jones has been letting me know about. One gave access to the 18th century tax lists for Virginia and I took the opportunity to download copies of the originals into our files. (R2552-R2257) While transcripts of most of this information was already in our files some of the entries corrected past transcription errors. In other cases the documents provided additional information that had not been included in the files. It was also useful to see the amount of tax paid in relationship to their neighbours. You can interpret this information in several ways but in most cases the more tax that was paid the older and more established the family was. This is particularly useful when you have a father and son listed on the same return. It is more likely that the father is going to pay more tax than the son.

I have been enjoying my correspondence with Chris Geoghegan of Australia. Working on her Hertfordshire Whitlocks has made me re-look at a lot of the research I did in the 1970's when I lived in Hertfordshire and did quite a bit of research in the Hertfordshire and Essex areas of . A lot of bits and pieces of information had come in over the years and when I put them all together it enabled me to put together a

Whitlock Family Newsletter Vol.25 No.4 Dec 2006 Page 2 likely line for Chris tracing back to the 1630's. With the exception of Chris’s ancestor John Whitlock married in 1843 the line is unbroken. Hopefully the marriage certificate from 1843 will tell Chris which of the previous generation was the father and we can make that connection as well.

One of the important items in this process was the 1808 will of John Whitlock of Barley, Hertfordshire. The will had not meant a lot to me when I acquired it some years ago but it was clear looking at it now that it connected three generations together. It also clearly connected the Whitlocks of Barley, Hertfordshire with the Whitlocks of Barkway, Essex. I have detailed this family on the end of the WHITLOCK08 chart and added a lot of miscellaneous Essex and Hertfordshire connections to this chart as well. Once we determine who John Whitlock’s father was I hope to publish a Main Line for Chris Geoghegan showing this family.

I was interested to receive an obit for Major Ogden Whitlock (X6023). He died Feb.24,1911 at Colorado Springs, Colorado. I have done a short article on him for this issue.

Thomas Glassel has been sending in interesting information on the Baldwin family (X6051) and in particular their connection to Cholesbury, Buckinghamshire where we are trying to confirm a Whitlock connection. It is obvious the Baldwins had a long association with the area and it is likely through this family the Whitlocks came to be associated with Cholesbury.

Michael Jones also sent in great new detail on the family of Bowen Whitlock of North Carolina (X6052). We had known from the early census records that Bowen Whitlock likely married and had upwards of eight children but we did not know his wife’s name or the names of any of the children. Michael tells us that Bowen’s wife was Althina Jones and gives us the names of at least seven children. This family is detailed on our WHITLOCK87 chart.

Lu Royce has been looking for information on Duard Whitlock a young man who became an outlaw and was about 17 when he was killed at Goldfield, Nevada in 1903 (X6053). He was the youngest son of James Hardin & Margaret Ann (Voorhees) Whitlock who were married in 1857 at Ephraim, Salt Lake Co., Utah. Hopefully we can uncover additional information about Duard’s short life.

One of the websites I did print information from was the Library and Archives Canada site (X6079). This provided an eclectic array of Whitlock information, mostly relating to Canada. You do not get access to the actual items but it gives you enough information to know if you want to pursue the item in the future. One of the items was a prairie landscape painting by F. Whitlock that was presented to Justice John Sopinka in 1969. This was interesting as we have two paintings in our collection by the same artist. I thought a copy of the portrait of William Coley Whitlock (1787-1875), merchant of Vaudreuil, Quebec would be worth trying to obtain. One day...

I have done a short article on James Campbell who married Catherine Morrell Whitlock. Mary Jo Hawkinson’s research into the family of Roger Haddock Whitlock (X6081) adds to this research as well.

Lots of certificates received for this issue. Mostly from Lawrence Otis but other additions from Chris Geoghegan and Jeff Buttifant. Also a steady stream of newspaper clippings - always appreciated.

The US 1900 census extracts are now complete to page 415. The last state done was Ohio and I am now working on Oregon. The Birth register is now complete to 1840 and I have entered most of 1870. I am also slowly working my way through Doris Bramlett’s book on the Jones family, adding this information to the WHITLOCK33 chart. I have also started a South Carolina file for all Whitlock entries pre 1830. No lack of projects!!

Subscriptions have held fairly steady at 123 and with the increase in subscription rates our funds are fairly stable as well. The 2006 statement is enclosed with this issue as well as the renewals for 2007. You will notice on your mailing label that the last two digits on the top line shows the year your subscription is paid to. I hope you will continue to support the Whitlock Family Association for another year.

As we head into our 39th year of the Whitlock Family Association and Volume 26 of the Whitlock Family Newsletter hopefully the accomplishments of everyone who has contributed to this research over the years speak for themselves. The website gets a lot of activity and it is fairly rare these days that I hear from anyone researching their Whitlock ancestors that I can’t help in some way. With the advent of on-line

research the need for some of the source information on our website may less relevant than it was in the past (eg census records) but the need to consolidate and analyze information is even more relevant today as the size of the family continues to grow exponentially. The clearing house concept to move research forward by sharing past analysis and conclusions instead of constantly redoing the same research is needed even more. My thanks to everyone and I look forward to the coming year’s new finds and revelations about the family. Patrick recently printed some material off the Internet that provides more information.

Whitlockite is a phosphate and is rare. The chemistry is Ca9 (Mg,Fe)(PO4)6PO3OH, Calcium Magnesium, Iron Phosphate Hydroxide.

The physical charateristics are:

• Colour is gray, yellowish, white or colourless. • Luster is vitreous.

Whitlock Family Newsletter Vol.25 No.4 Dec 2006 Page 7 • Transparency: specimens are transparent to translucent. • Crystal System is trigonal; 3 m • Cleavage is absent. • Fracture is uneven. • Hardness is 5. • Specific Gravity is approximately 3.1 (average for translucent minerals). • Streak is white.

It was first discovered at the Palermo mine, North Groton, Grafton Co., New Hampshire. It forms small but distinct and well formed crystals. It has also been found in Rapid Springs, Yukon, Canada, Spring Creek mine Flinders Ridge, Australia and Tip Top Pegmatite, Custer Co., South Dakota, U.S.A.

It was noted in an article on kidney stones that Whitlockite is the most common of the prostate stones and I did not even know there was such a thing as prostate stones!!

Whitlockite is named for the noted mineralogist Herbert Percy Whitlock (1868-1948). He was the son of Thomas Whitlock & Caroline Vermilyea Hull of New York and is shown on the WHITLOCK16 chart. He married Julia Jacques Gardner in 1904. They had no children.

VA 1862 A few months ago Franklin Whitlock sent me a section of the book Henrico County [Va] - Field of Honor - Another day of Desperate Fighting that details the Civil War Battle that took place June 30,1862 around the farm house of John Whitlock.

The following extract shows the minute details of the battle are recorded:

The road continued south and crossed the headwaters of Western Run. In the open field stood John Whitlock’s log farmhouse and outbuildings. Between Willis Church and Long Bridge Road, the headwaters of Western Run were approximately a half mile west of Willis Church/Quaker Road. Longstreet’s men would have to cross the marshy areas on either side of Western Run before encountering the Union defenders. As events unfolded, the killing field, or area of intense fighting, during the Battle of Glendale was confined to an area a little over one mile long, south to north, by one-half mile deep, east to west, or roughly 2,000 by 1,000 yards.

On the left of the Union line, General Joseph Hooker was ordered to deploy his division southwest of the Willis Church/Quaker Road and south of the farm road that ran to Whitlock’s. He reported that he began doing so around 9:00 a.m., and that the right of his division rested on the farm road to Whitlock’s. Grover’s Brigade moved into position on Hooker’s right with two regiments on the first line and two on the second. On the right of Grover’s first line, the 16th Massachusetts “was in position across and on the immediate left of the [farm] road [to Whitlock’s].” Company H of the 16th Massachusetts was “posted immediately upon this road.” Company C of the regiment was sent forward to occupy the Whitlock house. Grover placed the 26th Pennsylvania on the left of the 16th Massachusetts. Behind these two regiments, Grover deployed the 2nd New Hampshire on the right of his second line, behind the 16th Massachusetts. The 1st Massachusetts was deployed to the left of the 2nd New Hampshire, behind the 26th Pennsylvania. Grover’s fifth regiment, the 11th Massachusetts, was sent to the left of the divisional line.

The book details all aspects of the battle in great detail. As you can see from the illustration below the Whitlock house was between the two armies on the left hand side of the battle. While there is no description of the effects on the Whitlock House, in the neighbouring parsonage: “Everything was destroyed, chair cushions and bedding has been slashed open in the hunt for hidden treasure.” Not a room or piece of furniture escaped the avaricious eye of the pillager, whether he wore the Blue or Gray. In addition, minié balls were imbedded in the walls and a flying missile had damaged the upstairs railing. The house “was perforated on either side by hundreds of bullets, and crushed in some places with ponderous shells.”

The Whitlock House that featured so prominently in the Battle of Glendale was the home of John Whitlock (1790-1860), a long time resident of Henrico Co. John Whitlock was married firstly March 7,1822 to Frances Woodfin who died before 1838. He was married secondly to Fanny Tucker June 4,1838. Franklin Whitlock descends from John’s son Richard Whitlock & his wife Virginia Elizabeth Sweeney. This family is detailed on our WHITLOCK23 chart. Our thanks to Franklin for this piece of Whitlock history.

BULSTRODE WHITELOCKE’S CHILDREN David Griffiths sent in a copy of the painting by William Frederick Yeames (1835-1918) entitled “And when did you last see your Father?” [Walter Art Gallery, ] The painting depicts the children of Sir Bulstrode Whitelocke (1605-1675) being interviewed by parliamentary soldiers. The artist wrote: “I had at the time I painted this picture living in my house a nephew of an innocent and truthful disposition and it occurred to me to represent him in a situation where the child’s outspokenness and unconsciousness would lead to disastrous consequences. A scene in a country house occupied by the Puritans during the Rebellion in England suited my purpose.” “The ‘and’ in the title indicates how subtly the interrogator introduced the treacherous question. Yeames carefully stages his drama. The boy’s older sister weeps. Aware of the imminent catastrophe. But her upright little brother cannot understand the violent conflict. The Parliamentary soldiers appear gentle and considerate, comforting the weeping girl. Everyone - except the boy - knows what is at stake.”

Unfortunately attributing the painting to Sir Bulstrode’s children is historically incorrect as Bulstrode was a parliamentarian and reluctant supporter of Oliver Cromwell. It was the Royalist forces who came upon his unprotected children in the way Yeames portrayed in his painting. Ruth Spalding recounts the tale in her book The Improbable Puritan - A Life of Bulstrode Whitelocke 1605-1675.

The year is 1642, Britain is embroiled in a Civil War between the forces of Charles I and Oliver Cromwell. In November of that year William Cooke heard that Prince Rupert was descending on Henley where the Whitelocke home at Fawley was situated. Understanding the risk to the family of his prominent Parliamentarian landlord, “He gathered up the Whitelocke children, took them to his farm on Fawley hill and told his wife to pass them off as grandchildren.” The Royalist forces looted Bulstrode’s home, Fawley Manor and powerless to stop the destruction William Cooke returned home “ frightened and angry, to find Sir Thomas Byron paying undue attention to the Whitelocke children. Eventually Cooke had to confess that they were his landlord’s, but he begged that they should not suffer on their father’s account. To his relief Sir Thomas petted and kissed them, saying it would be barbarous to hurt the pretty infants.”

Bulstrode notes in his Diary: “Wh[itelocke] having removed his wife & two eldest daughters to London, & left 5. of his younger children with his tenant W[illiam] Cooke att Fawley, he sent to him to be carefull of them, & of his house & goods att Fawley Court, in case the King should match that way...” the children in the care of William Cooke and his wife were William age near 6, Mary, Anne and Cecilia, age 3,2 & 1 and Hester born in August.

JAMES CAMPBELL., ESQ., justice of the peace and formerly police magistrate of Virden, Macoupin County, and one of the city's venerable and most highly esteemed citizens was born June 7, 1821, in New Jersey. He is a son of Charles Muir and Agnes (Schenck) Campbell, the former of whom was born in Scotland, of Scotch parents. The mother was of Dutch ancestry.

Our subject received a good, common school education, the best the time and locality afforded, and his father taught him his own trade, that of coach and harness making. This he followed until 1840, when he sought a home in the fertile farming lands of the West, locating in Jersey County, Illinois. There he engaged in farming until 1854 and then moved to Sangamon County, where he continued to farm until 1873, when he settled at Virden. Here he became one of the enterprising citizens and was soon elected police magistrate, a position he filled with much credit to himself and benefit to the city. For the past 15 years he has filled the office of justice of the peace at Virden, bringing to it dignity, experience and judgment, and his impartial decisions have gained him the respect and esteem of his fellow citizens. Despite the weight of 82 years, his eye is bright, his brain alert, his perceptions as quick as those of a man many years his junior. Mr. Campbell is a great lover of music.

In 1841 Mr. Campbell married Catherine Whitlock who died in 1873, a few months after the family located at Virden. To this union were born 10 children, all of whom still survive, as follows: Charles W.; Jennetta A., widow of George E. Warwick; Edward A.; James; Margaret C., widow of Daniel H. Warwick; John Morgan; Agnes S.; Catherine M.; Ferdinand S.; and Mary Caroline, wife of John Beasley. He also has 27 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, all of whom regard him with the deepest respect and affection. In politics he is identified with the Democratic party.

Catherine Whitlock shown in this biography is Catherine Morrell Whitlock (1822-1873) the eldest daughter of Roger Haddock Whitlock (1800-1877) and his wife Gertrude Schuyler Schenck (1802-1837) who were married in Middletown, Monmouth Co., New Jersey Nov.22,1821. This family is detailed on the WHITLOCK16 chart. As both James Campbell and Catherine Morrell Whitlock’s mother’s maiden names were Schenck it would be interesting to know if they were related. Gertrude Schuyler Schenck’s parents were Peter Voorhees & Sarah (Shepherd) Schenck but I do not know who Agnes Schenck’s parents were.

Death claims veteran

Major Ogden Whitlock, 71 years old, died at the Deaconess hospital yesterday afternoon of heart failure. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the undertaking rooms of Fairleys and Law. The Ladies of the G.A.R. having charge of the service. Major Whitlock had lived here for about 26 years and homesteaded the land where Green Mountain Falls now stands. He was a member of the town board at that place for many years. He was a writer, editor and practical printer of the old school of journalism, and for many years edited a Chicago periodical. Major Whitlock's death was sudden. An hour before he died he was sitting up reading a newspaper. His army record is interesting. He enlisted in Illinois in 1862 and was mustered out in 1865. His company, together with others, formed the 105th regiment infantry, Colonel Daniel Dustin commanding. The regiment was a part of the first brigade, second division of the 20th Army corps. During the war he served in the capacity or rank of regimental postmaster, post printer, clerk court-marshall, clerk at district headquarters and sergeant-major. After the war he wrote a history of his regiment which was subsequently published. Major Whitlock left no immediate relatives, although he is survived by several nephews and nieces in California and Indiana. ----

Ogden Whitlock was born about 1839 in Illinois and shows on the 1850 census in the household of Seth Paine. It is assumed that his mother had married again and that she is the Frances Paine shown as Seth’s wife. Also living in the Paine household in 1850 is Fayette A. Whitlock age 19. Ogden Whitlock became a printer and in the 1850s he is shown with his brother John Whitlock as editors of the Wheaton Illinoian. The Illinois State Historical Society Vol XX (1927) says “John was a shortman but Ogden was tall with blue eyes and handsome...” Strangely while Ogden shows in the 1870 census for Illinois, I have not been able to find him in the 1880 or 1900 census records. There is a John A. Whitlick shown in the 1880 census El Paso Co., Colorado. John is a printer age 42 born in Illinois and both his parents were born in Virginia. This could be Ogden’s brother. It is strange that John does not show in the 1850 census with Ogden.
