The taxi-driver saves his sexual impulses for the affairs that he maintains, with a preference for teenage girls. Alice pretends not to acknowledge her husband's infidelities. Enter Nilson, Alice's old boyfriend from adolescence. Alice sees in him the possibility to realize her romantic dreams, changing the course of her love life and finances. People: The Legend VIDEO C 01 major tourist destination and a site for second homes of wealthy English of El Tepozteco Mexico City residents. In spite of these pressures, Tepoztlan has subtitles kept its special identity. The town's main tourist destination is the pyramid above the town, home of the god Tepoztecatl ("El Tepozteco" in Spanish). Though the locals, or "tepoztecos" are officially Christian, they say "When we are in trouble, we call on El Tepozteco, because he is our warrior spirit. But when it is time to go to heaven, we turn to the Almighty." In 1995, a multinational corporation announced a huge development, with a golf course, 700 luxury homes, an industrial park, and a shopping center. Rather than face this threat to their identity, the tepoztecos barricaded the town and fought the project to a standstill. At the forefront of this "Golf Club War" was El Tepozteco. Many say he personally led the defense of the barricades, even driving away a federal SWAT team. Certainly, his spirit, and his legend, served as a rallying cry for his people and helped them successfully defy the combined might of a multinational corporation and the Mexican state. The film also includes a bonus feature "The Language of the Seeds" (20 minutes). Every year, the market vendors of Tepoztlan create an amazing arch, made entirely of edible seeds, on the gateway to the parish church. Using the pictorial language of their Indian ancestors, each arch comments on the events of the year. These unique arches attract visitors from all over the world, and bring the people of Tepoztlan together as a community. This country has seen in Hollywood an effective structure for approaching the audience. With the purpose of approaching national and international audiences, Meximo has not only adopted some of Hollywood cinematographic genres, but it has also combined them with Mexican genres such as “Cabaretera” in order to reflect its social context and national identity. The Melodrama and the Film Noir were two of the Hollywood genres which exercised a stronger influence on the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema. Influence of these genres is specifically evident in style and narrative of the film Aventurera (1949). This film shows the links between Hollywood and Mexican cinema, displaying how some Hollywood conventions were translated and reformed in order to create its own Mexican Cinema. Most countries intending to create their own cinema have to face Hollywood influence. This industry has always been seen as a leading industry in technology, innovation, and economic capacity, and as the Nemesis of local cinema. This case study on Aventurera shows that Mexican cinema reached progress until exceeding conventions of cinematographic genres taken from Hollywood, creating stories which went beyond the local interest. Nel leggendario studio di Rudy Van Gelder, niente altro che il salotto della sua abitazione ad Hackensack, New Jersey, il 22 giugno di quell’anno il produttore Bob Weinstock, creatore dell’etichetta discografica Prestige, organizzò una seduta di registrazione per il sassofonista Sonny Rollins e il suo quartetto. Il frutto del lavoro di quella giornata confluì nell’album “Saxophone Colossus”, opera che nei decenni a venire avrebbe cambiato la vita di molti sassofonisti più o meno in erba. L’eccezionale quartetto convocato per l’occasione era completato da Tommy Flanagan al pianoforte, Doug Watkins al contrabbasso e Max Roach alla batteria. Tra i brani registrati in quell’occasione, il più noto è sicuramente St. Thomas, passato alla storia come uno dei primi “calypso” registrati nell’ambito del jazz. La forma del brano, di sedici misure, è una sorta di AABC in miniatura, con sezioni di quattro misure.

  • Film, Photojournalism, and the Public Sphere in Brazil and Argentina, 1955-1980
    ABSTRACT Title of Document: MODERNIZATION AND VISUAL ECONOMY: FILM, PHOTOJOURNALISM, AND THE PUBLIC SPHERE IN BRAZIL AND ARGENTINA, 1955-1980 Paula Halperin, Doctor of Philosophy, 2010 Directed By: Professor Barbara Weinstein Department of History University of Maryland, College Park My dissertation explores the relationship among visual culture, nationalism, and modernization in Argentina and Brazil in a period of extreme political instability, marked by an alternation of weak civilian governments and dictatorships. I argue that motion pictures and photojournalism were constitutive elements of a modern public sphere that did not conform to the classic formulation advanced by Jürgen Habermas. Rather than treating the public sphere as progressively degraded by the mass media and cultural industries, I trace how, in postwar Argentina and Brazil, the increased production and circulation of mass media images contributed to active public debate and civic participation. With the progressive internationalization of entertainment markets that began in the 1950s in the modern cities of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Buenos Aires there was a dramatic growth in the number of film spectators and production, movie theaters and critics, popular magazines and academic journals that focused on film. Through close analysis of images distributed widely in international media circuits I reconstruct and analyze Brazilian and Argentine postwar visual economies from a transnational perspective to understand the constitution of the public sphere and how modernization, Latin American identity, nationhood, and socio-cultural change and conflict were represented and debated in those media. Cinema and the visual after World War II became a worldwide locus of production and circulation of discourses about history, national identity, and social mores, and a space of contention and discussion of modernization.

Gillespie was inspired to play music by his father who was a bricklayer and part- time musician. Gillespie began playing the piano at the age of 4. He taught himself to play the trumpet by trial and error, with the help of a few friends at the age of 12. In 1935, Gillespie moved to Philadelphia with his mother, after the death of his father.

Assim, muitas dessas figuras que tiveram impor- tância fundamental para as artes cênicas brasilei- ras têm sido resgatadas do esquecimento. Mesmo o nome daqueles que já partiram são frequente- mente evocados pela voz de seus companheiros de palco ou de seus biógrafos. Ou seja, nessas histórias que se cruzam, verdadeiros mitos são redescobertos e imortalizados. E não só o público tem reconhecido a impor- tância e a qualidade da Aplauso. Em 2008, a Coleção foi laureada com o mais importante prêmio da área editorial do Brasil: o Jabuti. Concedido pela Câmara Brasileira do Livro (CBL), a edição especial sobre Raul Cortez ganhou na categoria biografia.
