YIKA-VWAZA TRUST RESEARCH STUDY REPORT N (2017/18) Vascular Plant Survey of Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve, Malawi By Sopani Sichinga ([email protected]) September , 2019 ABSTRACT In 2018 – 19, a survey on vascular plants was conducted in Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve. The reserve is located in the north-western Malawi, covering an area of about 986 km2. Based on this survey, a total of 461 species from 76 families were recorded (i.e. 454 Angiosperms and 7 Pteridophyta). Of the total species recorded, 19 are exotics (of which 4 are reported to be invasive) while 1 species is considered threatened. The most dominant families were Fabaceae (80 species representing 17. 4%), Poaceae (53 species representing 11.5%), Rubiaceae (27 species representing 5.9 %), and Euphorbiaceae (24 species representing 5.2%). The annotated checklist includes scientific names, habit, habitat types and IUCN Red List status and is presented in section 5. i ACKNOLEDGEMENTS First and foremost, let me thank the Nyika–Vwaza Trust (UK) for funding this work. Plant common name Description of Plant Picture of Plant Scientific name Strangler Fig The Strangler Fig begins life as a small vine-like plant Ficus thonningii that climbs the nearest large tree and then thickens, produces a branching set of buttressing aerial roots, and strangles its host tree. An easy way to tell the difference between Strangle Figs and other common figs is that the bottom half of the Strangler is gnarled and twisted where it used to be attached to its host, the upper half smooth. A common tree on kopjes and along rivers in Serengeti; two massive Fig trees near Serengeti; the "Tree Where Man was Born" in southern Loliondo, and the "Ancestor Tree" near Endulin, in Ngorongoro are significant for the local Maasai peoples. Wild Date Palm Palms are monocotyledons, the veins in their leaves Phoenix reclinata are parallel and unbranched, and are thus relatives of grasses, lilies, bananas and orchids. The wild Date Palm is the most common of the native palm trees, occurring along rivers and in swamps. The fruits are edible, though horrible tasting, while the thick, sugary sap is made into Palm wine. The tree offers a pleasant, softly rustling, fragrant-smelling shade; the sort of shade you will need to rest in if you try the wine. Candelabra The Candelabra tree is a common tree in the western Euphorbia and Northern parts of Serengeti. Like all Euphorbias, Euphorbia the Candelabra breaks easily and is full of white, candelabrum extremely toxic latex. One drop of this latex can blind or burn the skin. -

Nov. Gen is a species of flowering perennial shrub belonging to family Tecomaceae, and is native to South America. The flowers arise in condensed raceme with bright yellow colour flowers. Each ovary contains many ovules. Seeds are non endospermic, with seed coat showing papery appearance. The structure of embryo is very distinct. Southern California Endemic Habitats Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment Synthesis An Important Note About this Document: This document represents an initial evaluation of vulnerability for endemic habitats based on expert input and existing information. Specifically, the information presented below comprises habitat expert vulnerability assessment survey results and comments, peer- review comments and revisions, and relevant references from the literature. The aim of this document is to expand understanding of habitat vulnerability to changing climate conditions, and to provide a foundation for developing appropriate adaptation responses. Executive Summary In this assessment, endemic habitats are considered as one collective habitat grouping, but directed comments are provided for the following systems of interest:1 serpentine, carbonate, gabbro, pebble plains, and clay lens. Price © Smithsonian Inst., 2005 Genetic Safety Net Species Hawai‘i Natural Heritage Ranking ‐ Critically Endangered (G1) Endemism – Kaua‘i Critical Habitat ‐ Designated SPECIES INFORMATION: Xylosma crenatum is a dioecious tree which grows up to 50 feet tall. It was first collected in 1917 but remained undiscovered for decades due to a misidentification. Over 50 years later, a second collection was made in 1968 along the banks of Mohihi Stream at the edge of Alaka‘i Swamp, Kaua‘i. It was later recognized as a distinct species in 1972. DISTRIBUTION: Northwest Kaua‘i. ABUNDANCE: Currently, it is known only from the island of Kaua‘i in four different populations consisting of a total of 13 individuals. Two of these populations have only a single plant. LOCATION AND CONDITION OF KEY HABITAT: Diverse koa‐‘ōhi‘a montane mesic forest at an elevation of 975‐1,065 meters. This species is found on State land, sometimes along stream banks. The habitat is threatened by invasion of alien plants and damage from feral pigs. THREATS: Habitat degradation by feral pigs; Fruit predation by rats; Competition from alien plant species; Stochastic extinction; Reduced reproductive vigor due to the small number of remaining individuals. CONSERVATION ACTIONS: The goals of conservation actions are not only to protect current populations, but also to establish new populations to reduce the risk of extinction. In addition to common statewide and island conservation actions, specific actions include: Survey historical range for surviving populations; Establish secure ex‐situ stocks with complete representation of remaining individuals; Augment wild population and establish new populations in safe harbors.
