Korea Forest Research Institute News 14-6 Experimental Forests of The Korea Forest Research Institute Experimental Forests? An Experimental Forest(EF), administered by the Korea Forest Research Institute(KFRI), is a forest provided for the research necessary for the sustainable forest management and the development of practical technologies. The following research projects are being conducted: • silviculture and forest management options; • forest tree improvement; and • long-term change of forest ecosystems, and climate change adaptation and monitoring. Additionally, the KFRI’s Experimental Forests are dedicated to the forest education which aims to increase people’s understanding of the importance of trees and forests, and the dissemination of knowledge and technologies developed by KFRI. 02 Management Strategy Strategic Goal Address the issue of forest and forestry by strengthening the linkage among policies, R&D and fields R&D Goal Increase the added value of forest R&D by developing technologies applicable to the forest and forestry fields Managerial Strategy Strategy Establish the infrastructure Strategy Conduct the research projects Strategy Dissemination of knowledge 01 for the sustainable 02 applicable to the forest policies 03 and technologies management of EF and forestry fields Protection and maintenance of EF Development of non-timber forest Establishment of model and Development of the web-based products as short-term income sources demonstration forests operational system Breeding of new timber varieties for Establishment of educational forests Establishment and management reforestation, and North Korea and for foresters and forest students of the database for the EF overseas plantations Operation of educational programs information Development of silvicultural technologies and services Expansion of EF and experimental Installation of flux towers for monitoring Diffusion of new varieties and their sites in EF the long-term change of forest cultivation methods Expansion of ex situ gene ecosystems and climate change conservation forests Test of the applicability of developed- technologies and models in the fields 03 Gwangneung Distribution of Seoul KFRI’s Experimental Suwon Forests 01 Headquarters Hongneung : 35 ha Urban forest ecosystems, Public education Jinju Seogwipo 02 Forest Practice Research Center 04 Southern Forest Resources Research Center Gwangneung: 1,072 ha Jinju: 749 ha Timber production, Gene conservation, Biodiversity conservation Public education 03 Dept. Station Hongneung neighborhood park 06 Outline The Hongneung Experimental Forest is located at the southwestern foot of Mt. Cheonjang (elevation : 141 m a.s.l.), east of Seoul. In the past, the grave for Empress Myeongseong was located in the forest (The grave was moved to another region in 1919). The name of the Experimental Forest originated from the name of the grave, Hongneung (‘Neung’ means a grave in Korean). In 1922, Korea’s first arboretum was established in the forest with the foundation of the Forestry Experiment Station, the former of KFRI. Currently, the arboretum holds a total of 2,035 plant species (1,224 woody plant species and 811 herbaceous plant species). During the weekdays, the forest is opened to the students for educational purposes. Since 1993, the forest has been opened to the public on Saturdays and Sundays, to increase people’s understanding of the importance of trees and forests. In 1911, most of the forest with the exception of the grave area was designated as the experimental forest. In 1912, an experimental nursery and an experimental site were set up in the forest. Since then, the Gwangneung Experimental Forest has played a key role in developing silvicultural technologies.
