Green Car Journal Announces Washington Auto Show Green Car Awards Finalists Barbara Pomerance [email protected] 800-697-7574 Green Car Journal Announces Washington Auto Show Green Car Awards Finalists WASHINGTON, Nov. 17, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Green Car Journal has announced finalists for the magazine’s prestigious 2017 Connected Green Car of the Year™, 2017 Luxury Green Car of the Year™, and 2017 Green SUV of the Year™ awards today at a press conference held at LA Auto Show’s AutoMobility LA™, with finalist vehicles on display. Winners of the three awards will be announced on January 26 at The Washington Auto Show® in Washington DC. Finalists for 2017 Connected Green Car of the Year™ include the Audi A3 e-tron, Honda Civic, Mercedes-Benz C350e, Tesla Model X, and Toyota Prius Prime. Each of these finalists offers advanced connectivity and driver assistance systems combined with admirable levels of environmental performance. Four are plug-in vehicles while one is powered by efficient gasoline internal combustion. In contention for 2017 Luxury Green Car of the Year™ are the 2017 Acura NSX, BMW 740e xDrive iPerformance, Jaguar XE 20d, Mercedes-Benz S550e, and Range Rover Td6. This diverse group of premium ‘green’ finalists includes plug-in, hybrid, and advanced diesel vehicles. Nominees for 2017 Green SUV of the Year™ include the BMW X5 xDrive40e iPerformance, Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-9, Mercedes-Benz GLE550e, and Nissan Rogue Hybrid. Also a diverse group, these efficient SUV and crossover models achieve their efficiencies with plug-in, hybrid, and internal combustion power. “These exceptional models illustrate that ‘green’ cars come in all classes and configurations,” said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal and GreenCarJournal.com. “Automakers continue to expand their efforts in designing and manufacturing more efficient and environmentally positive vehicles across the automotive spectrum. This is an important evolution from the early years of ‘green’ cars when models were primarily gasoline-electric hybrid and typically small sedans or hatchbacks.” Presented annually at The Washington Auto Show, these Green Car Awards™ honor the best-of- the-best in the important premium, connected, and SUV/crossover categories. Of particular importance is that these finalists achieve their environmental leadership in their own way. Hybrid power continues to be an important strategy in achieving greater environmental compatibility, along with plug-in hybrid, battery electric, and advanced gasoline and diesel propulsion. The coordination of Green Car Awards™ announcements and joint exhibition of finalists is a significant new development between major auto shows on the auto show circuit. This milestone underscores the growing importance of “green” cars in the auto industry and how they are in turn creating synergies in complementary areas as well. Green Car Journal’s Green Car of the Year® has been a high-profile program at Los Angeles Auto Show’s press and trade days (now AutoMobility LA™) since 2005. Beginning in 2008, the Green Car Awards™ have been a key feature of The Washington Auto Show®, the “public policy show” on the auto show circuit that puts a priority on safety and sustainability. About Green Car Journal The award-winning Green Car Journal has focused on the intersection of automobiles, energy, and environment since its launch in 1992. • General Motors: the Electric Revolution Sharon L
Journal of Business Case Studies – Second Quarter 2014 Volume 10, Number 2 General Motors: The Electric Revolution Sharon L. Poczter, Cornell University, USA Luka M. Jankovic, Cornell University, USA ABSTRACT The recent explosion in demand for electric vehicles, fueled by both increasing gas prices and rising awareness of consumers to environmental concerns, has challenged traditional car manufacturers to explore alternatives to gas-powered automobiles. Of the new models presenting alternatives to traditional gas-powered cars, the award-winning Tesla Model S and Nissan Leaf have commanded the majority of the attention and sales in the electric car market. General Motors’ Volt, on the other hand, has seen lukewarm sales after missing its high production and consumption expectations. As the inevitable pursuit of sustainable solutions for energy use continues, GM is placed in a precarious situation. On the one hand, their attempts at entering the electric car market have been unsuccessful thus far. On the other hand, retreating from the emerging industry may be detrimental if gas-powered cars become vestigial in the future. Should GM simply continue to manufacture standard automobiles? Or should they invest further in electric vehicles, acquiring the necessary technology to compete with market leaders? Keywords: Market Entry; Automobile Industry; Electric Automobiles INTRODUCTION t is 2013. A tense boardroom convenes at the General Motors headquarters in Detroit, Michigan. The anxious board looks on at Daniel Akerson, CEO and Chairman of General Motors, sitting pensively at the end of the table. The agenda: managing the threat of the emerging electric car industry. I GM’s foray into the electric vehicle market in 2010 with the hybrid Chevrolet Volt fell short of expectations as other manufacturers produced electric vehicles that had longer ranges, shorter recharging times, lower prices, and better all-around performance.

Chevrolet Volt Wins 2016 Canadian Green Car Award Volt continues to accumulate accolades TORONTO (Friday, April 15, 2016) – The 2016 Chevrolet Volt was recognized today with the 2016 Green Car Award at the Green Living Show. “Chevrolet is honoured to receive the 2016 Canadian Green Car Award here at the Green Living Show, as it reinforces our leadership and commitment to electrification of the automobile,” said Nicolas Longpre, assistant brand manager, Chevrolet Canada. “With up to 85 kilometres of EV range, the second-generation Volt is a no-compromise electric vehicle that eliminates range anxiety with its on- board generator, making it the most innovative plug-in vehicle in the industry.” The Canadian Green Car Award recognizes vehicles, widely available in Canada, that combine impressive environmental attributes with strong mass-market appeal, as a result, the assessments included both “objective” criteria, such as fuel economy, emissions and price, and the judges’ evaluations of performance, driving experience, value, features and “green” qualities. Those environmental benefits not only included fuel efficiency and emissions but also the use of sustainable or recyclable materials and measures taken by manufacturers to green their operations. A panel of top Canadian automotive journalists selected the Volt, the plug-in family car from among six category winners as the vehicle that best combines environmental benefits and mass-market appeal. The 2016 Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle with extended range showcases a sleeker, sportier design that offers up to 85 kilometres of EV range, greater efficiency and stronger acceleration. The Volt’s new propulsion system offers a significantly increased total driving range while the new 1.5L range extender, designed to use regular unleaded fuel, offers a combined fuel consumption rating of 5.6 L/100km eliminating range anxiety.
