PDF (Right Click to Download File) Chevrolet Volt Wins 2016 Canadian Green Car Award Volt continues to accumulate accolades TORONTO (Friday, April 15, 2016) – The 2016 Chevrolet Volt was recognized today with the 2016 Green Car Award at the Green Living Show. “Chevrolet is honoured to receive the 2016 Canadian Green Car Award here at the Green Living Show, as it reinforces our leadership and commitment to electrification of the automobile,” said Nicolas Longpre, assistant brand manager, Chevrolet Canada. “With up to 85 kilometres of EV range, the second-generation Volt is a no-compromise electric vehicle that eliminates range anxiety with its on- board generator, making it the most innovative plug-in vehicle in the industry.” The Canadian Green Car Award recognizes vehicles, widely available in Canada, that combine impressive environmental attributes with strong mass-market appeal, as a result, the assessments included both “objective” criteria, such as fuel economy, emissions and price, and the judges’ evaluations of performance, driving experience, value, features and “green” qualities. Those environmental benefits not only included fuel efficiency and emissions but also the use of sustainable or recyclable materials and measures taken by manufacturers to green their operations. A panel of top Canadian automotive journalists selected the Volt, the plug-in family car from among six category winners as the vehicle that best combines environmental benefits and mass-market appeal. The 2016 Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle with extended range showcases a sleeker, sportier design that offers up to 85 kilometres of EV range, greater efficiency and stronger acceleration. The Volt’s new propulsion system offers a significantly increased total driving range while the new 1.5L range extender, designed to use regular unleaded fuel, offers a combined fuel consumption rating of 5.6 L/100km eliminating range anxiety. “In addition to build award winning EVs, we are also committed to working with governments across Canada that are investing in better recharging infrastructure and providing Canadian consumers with a range of incentives to increase EV adoption,” said David Paterson, vice-president, corporate & environmental affairs, General Motors Canada. This latest accolade for the Chevrolet Volt compliments the recent AJAC 2016 Canadian Green Car of the Year award and the Green Car of the Year awarded by the Green Car Journal. It was the second time the Volt won the award. About The Green Living Show The Green Living Show is Canada’s largest consumer show dedicated to simple solutions for leading a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. This three-day event offers inspiration for all ages and features influential speakers; eco home, cottage and garden design; local and organic food and wine tastings; health, wellness and yoga pavilions; eco fashion and green beauty makeovers; electric and hybrid car test drives; nature exhibits and fun activities for the entire family. www.greenlivingshow.ca About the Canadian Green Car Award The Canadian Green Car Award is Canada’s premier award recognizing vehicles with the greatest potential for environmental benefits. • General Motors: the Electric Revolution Sharon L
Journal of Business Case Studies – Second Quarter 2014 Volume 10, Number 2 General Motors: The Electric Revolution Sharon L. Poczter, Cornell University, USA Luka M. Jankovic, Cornell University, USA ABSTRACT The recent explosion in demand for electric vehicles, fueled by both increasing gas prices and rising awareness of consumers to environmental concerns, has challenged traditional car manufacturers to explore alternatives to gas-powered automobiles. Of the new models presenting alternatives to traditional gas-powered cars, the award-winning Tesla Model S and Nissan Leaf have commanded the majority of the attention and sales in the electric car market. General Motors’ Volt, on the other hand, has seen lukewarm sales after missing its high production and consumption expectations. As the inevitable pursuit of sustainable solutions for energy use continues, GM is placed in a precarious situation. On the one hand, their attempts at entering the electric car market have been unsuccessful thus far. On the other hand, retreating from the emerging industry may be detrimental if gas-powered cars become vestigial in the future. Should GM simply continue to manufacture standard automobiles? Or should they invest further in electric vehicles, acquiring the necessary technology to compete with market leaders? Keywords: Market Entry; Automobile Industry; Electric Automobiles INTRODUCTION t is 2013. A tense boardroom convenes at the General Motors headquarters in Detroit, Michigan. The anxious board looks on at Daniel Akerson, CEO and Chairman of General Motors, sitting pensively at the end of the table. The agenda: managing the threat of the emerging electric car industry. I GM’s foray into the electric vehicle market in 2010 with the hybrid Chevrolet Volt fell short of expectations as other manufacturers produced electric vehicles that had longer ranges, shorter recharging times, lower prices, and better all-around performance.
