AutoMobility LA’s inaugural Hackathon, presented by Honda Innovations, became the first-ever hack hosted by an auto show. For this year’s challenge, a talented group of 100 developers had 24 hours on November 27-28 to use the 2018 Honda Odyssey as well as data, APIs and software provided by the City of Los Angeles, Los Angeles Department of Transportation and Honda Innovations to address mobility issues that dynamic cities face when hosting large, international events.

Tribal Scale's predictive driver assistance platform, that allows the City of Los Angeles to anticipate traffic collisions and arrive on scene within 30 seconds, won the grand prize of $7,500. Team 's application named WING, which utilizes publicly-owned transportation and parking data to alleviate vehicle congestion during high traffic events, earned second place, while EPAM Systems' submission, an in-car intelligent assistant, was awarded third place.

Each year, AutoMobility LA selects ten startups with the potential to shape the automotive industry. This year’s shortlist featured true standouts among an increasingly crowded field of companies emerging in the automotive space. The top ten were selected based on vision, innovation, unique perspective and the likelihood of technology adoption and success.

The winners of this year’s Top Ten Automotive Startups Competition presented by Magna International, Inc. received prizes equivalent to more than $200,000; prizes were provided by Audi, Elektrobit, Microsoft, NVIDIA and Porsche Consulting. The grand prize winner participated in an advisory session with the judges, had the opportunity to attend the Extreme Tech Challenge (XTC) and received a $15,000 cash award to help further grow their business.

29 DESIGN & DEVELOPER CHALLENGE

Earlier this year, AutoMobility LA invited professionals from automotive and beyond to look far into the future and imagine what life in Los Angeles would be like if the city were to host a major global sporting event in the year 2060 in its annual Design & Developer Challenge presented by Microsoft. Participants of this year’s challenge created conceptual plans on how 20 million citizens, athletes, volunteers and visitors will get around using new and existing public, private and alternate modes of mobility. Five teams were selected to present their concepts to industry and media professionals attending AutoMobility LA on Nov. 29, including a panel of judges. Once the winner of the Judges’ Pick award was announced, industry and media professionals from around the world were able to review all the entries and vote for their favorite concept on automobilityla.com. The winner of this year’s Industry Pick award was announced on Dec. 11, along with the People’s Pick award that the public voted for on laautoshow.com.
