In total 20 aphid species, representing 12 genera, were found infesting 35 medicinal and aromatic plant species under 31 genera encompassing 19 families. Aphis gossypii with 17 host plant species was the most polyphagous species followed by Myzus persicae and Aphis fabae that infested 15 and 12 host plant species respectively. Twenty-two host plant species had multiple aphid species infestation. Sonchus asper was infested by eight aphid species and was followed by Tagetes minuta, Galinosoga perviflora and Chenopodium album that were infested by 7, 6 and 5 aphid species respectively. Asteraceae with 11 host plant species under 10 genera, carrying 13 aphid species under 8 genera was the most aphid- prone plant family. A preliminary systematic checklist of studied aphids and list of host plant species are provided. Key words: Aphids, Medicinal/Aromatic plants, checklist, Poonch, Kashmir, Pakistan.

The list includes records before 1992, which have been published in previous papers, as well as data from an almost ten-year survey using Rothamsted suction traps and Moericke traps. The recorded aphidofauna consisted of 301 species. The family Aphididae is represented by 13 subfamilies and 120 genera (300 species), while only one genus (1 species) belongs to Phylloxeridae. The aphid fauna is dominated by the subfamily Aphidi- nae (57.1 and 68.4 % of the total number of genera and species, respectively), especially the tribe Macrosiphini, and to a lesser extent the subfamily Eriosomatinae (12.6 and 8.3 % of the total number of genera and species, respectively).

Not only do they feed on the plants, but aphids can transmit virus diseases. The natural spread of aphid transmitted cucurbit viruses is often accomplished by Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris), Aphis craccivora Koch, Aphis gossypii Glover and Myzus persicae (Sulzer). Aphid- transmitted viruses in cucurbits have been poorly investigated in Croatia, although Cucumber mosaic cucumovirus (CMV) sporadically occurs on cucurbits. The aim of this study was to investigate and identify aphid species in a watermelon field. The field experiment with watermelons [Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum & Nakai] was conducted during 2004 and 2005 at Opuzen (43°00’N, 17°34’E, 3 m elevation), located in the Mediterranean area of Croatia. Opuzen is situated in the delta of the river Neretva River, the most important watermelon-growing area in Croatia. Aphid sampling was carried out using yellow water traps (70x70x12 cm). Traps were installed at the date of transplanting and observed daily in order to determine initial aphid flight prior to the first sampling.

Both new recorded species belong to the tribe Pem- phigini, subfamily Eriosomatinae. Among the identified species, 8 aphid species were new records for Razavi Khorasan province. Keywords: Aphid, elm, poplar, fauna, gall-inducing aphid. Many insect groups, around 13,000 species, are known as plant gall makers (Nyman and Julkunen-Tiitto, 2000; Suzuki et al., 2009). Among them, Aphidoidea is a very large superfamily in the hemipteran suborder Sternorrhyncha with about 5000 known species (Blackman and Eastop, 2000; Ge et al., 2016). It is estimated that there are practically 10–20 % gallicolous aphid species nationwide (Chakrabarti, 2007; Chen and Qiao, 2012; Álvarez et al., 2013).

  • Aspects of the Biology and Taxonomy of British Myrmecophilous Root Aphids
Aspects of the biology and taxonomy of British myrmecophilous root aphids. by Richard George PAUL, BoSc.(Lond.),17.90.(Glcsgow). Thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosopk,. of the University of London and for the Diploma of Imperial Colleao Decemi)or 1977. Dopartaent o:vv. .;:iotory)c Cromwell Road. 1.0;AMOH )t=d41/: -1- ABSTRACT. This thesis concerns the biology and taxonomy of root feeding aphids associated with British ants. A root aphid for the purposes of this thesis is defined as an aphid which, during at least part of its life cycle feeds either (a) beneath the normal soil surface or (b) beneath a tent of soil that has been placed over it by ants. The taxonomy of the genera Paranoecia and Anoecia has been revised and some synonomies proposed. Chromosome numbers have been discovered for Anoecia spp. and are used to clarify the taxonomy. The biology of Anoecia species has been studied and new facts about their life cycles have been discovered. A key is given to the British r European, African and North American species of Anoeciinae and this is included in a key to British myrmecophilous root aphids. Suction trap catches (1968-1976) from about twenty British traps have been used as a record of seasonal flight patterns for root aphids. All the Anoecia species caught in 1975 and 1976 were identified on the basis of new taxonomic work. Catches which had formerly all been identified as Anoecia corni were found to be A. corni, A. varans and A. furcata. The information derived from the catches was used to plot relative abundance and distribution maps for the three species.

  • Population Genetics in Biological Control: Cryptic Species, Host-Associations, and the Geographic Mosaic of Coevolution
Population Genetics in Biological Control: Cryptic Species, Host-associations, and the Geographic Mosaic of Coevolution By Jeremy C Andersen A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Science Policy and Management in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Nicholas J. Mills, Chair Professor George K. Roderick Professor Rasmus Nielsen Spring 2015 ABSTRACT Population Genetics in Biological Control: Cryptic Species, Host-associations, and the Geographic Mosaic of Coevolution by Jeremy C Andersen Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Science Policy and Management University of California, Berkeley Professor Nicholas J Mills, Chair In this dissertation I expand upon our knowledge in regards to the utility of population genetic approaches to be used for the study of the evolution of introduced biological control agents and their target pests. If biological control methods are to provide sustainable pest management services then more long-term studies will be necessary, and these studies should also include the use of population genetic approaches. For existing biological control programs, post-release population genetic studies could be initiated using museum voucher specimens for baseline data. In Chapter 2, I explored what factors influence our ability to extract usable genomic material from dried museum specimens, and whether we could use non-destructive techniques for parasitic hymenoptera. I found that the age of the specimen was the most important determinant for the amplification of PCR products, with nuclear loci having a higher probability of amplification from older specimens than mitochondrial loci. With these sequence results I was able to differentiate voucher specimens of different strains of the biological control agent Trioxys pallidus and I was able to confirm the identification of an unknown parasitoid reared from the invasive light brown apple moth.
