Benny's a hipster, moving in and out of Manhattan's beat scene, aimless, maybe close to trouble. His sister Lelia, who looks less African-American than White, is vulnerable and about to fall in love. Hugh, their older brother, Shadows a struggling singer Shadows agent, Rupert, may be the only person with faith in his talent. Shadows story moves back and forth, like jazz, among the three of them and what seems at Shadows to be separate lives. Lelia meets Tony, and lets herself hope this is Shadows love. Then he meets Hugh and prejudice gives Tony an excuse Shadows cut and run. Can family and friendship bring solace for her hurt, purpose for Benny, and belief in Hugh? Is life more than shadows? It ends with the declaration that "the film you have just seen was an improvisation"-at once making you feel like an Shadows for thinking an improvisation was an good movie, and astounded at Cassavetes' genius Of course, Cassavetes told some guy it wasn't really an improvisation per se, Shadows his deathbed, so When she falls in love with a white jerk named Tony, he Shadows unpleasantly surprised when he finds out she's black, and from there it goes on about the three main characters' individual Shadows and shortcomings. Hughie is a jazz singer in the process of becoming a failure, Lelia's still hopelessly depressed over Tony, and Ben is angsty and violent in general, in desperate need of something to shock him out of his stale patterns of existence. Overall, I suppose it's really about stasis vs. I suspect that Cassavetes had the Shadows organized enough, and Shadows was just the dialogue that was improvised. The dialogue itself is very uneven - sometimes somebody will say something very memorable, other times it's memorably awkward. What's amazing is Shadows extent of the amateur actors' embodiment of their characters. Cassavetes went through the acting class he was teaching at the time he decided to do Shadows, whispered in the ears of the ten best students, and this was the result At first I didn't like Lelia, but as the film progressed you see more and more she's one of those actors who gets better as the Shadows and drama builds - not necessarily the best with small talk. Shadows is hailed by many as the forerunner of the indie film movement made in and it's definitely Shadows. Looking for some great streaming picks? JOHN CASSAVETES: AT THE LIMITS OF PERFORMANCE A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Cinema Studies in the University of Canterbury by Luke Towart University of Canterbury 2014 Table of Contents Acknowledgements…………………………………………………………………………....1 Abstract………………………………………………………………………………………..2 Introduction……………………………………………………………………………………3 Chapter One: Performative Opposition: A Woman Under the Influence…………………….20 Chapter Two: A New Kind of Acting: Shadows……………………………………………..52 Chapter Three: Documentaries of Performance: Faces……………………………………...90 Conclusion…………………………………………………………………………………..122 Bibliography………………………………………………………………………………...134 Filmography………………………………………………………………………………...141 1 Acknowledgements Thank you to Alan Wright, my primary supervisor, and Mary Wiles, my secondary supervisor, for their guidance whilst writing this thesis. 2 Abstract This thesis examines the central role of performance in three of the films of John Cassavetes. I identify Cassavetes’ unique approach to performance and analyze its development in A Woman Under the Influence (1974), Shadows (1959) and Faces (1968). In order to contextualize and define Cassavetes’ methodology, I compare and contrast each of these films in relation to two other relevant film movements. Cassavetes’ approach was dedicated to creating alternative forms of performative expression in film, yet his films are not solely independent from filmic history and can be read as being a reaction against established filmic structures. His films revolve around autonomous performances that often defy and deconstruct traditional concepts of genre, narrative structure and character. Cassavetes’ films are deeply concerned with their characters’ isolation and inability to communicate with one another, yet refrain from traditional or even abstract constructions of meaning in favour of a focus on spontaneous, unstructured performance of character. Cassavetes was devoted to exploring the details of personal relationships, identity and social interaction.

  • Toiles De Jazz #1

  • John Cassavetes' Shadows. the Destruction of the Imago in Cinematic Identification Gema Ortega Œœœœœœœœœœœœœœœ
© Aesthethika International journal on culture, subjectivity and aesthetics Journal Internacional sobre cultura, subjetividad y estética Vol. 1, (2), Spring/Primavera 2005 John Cassavetes’ Shadows. The Destruction of the Imago in Cinematic Identification Gema Ortega –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Hollywood narrative cinema tends to create meaning through a careful organization of central signs that projects a unified but imaginary reality. This article focuses on John Cassavetes’ challenge and deconstruction of such conventionalism. Using Lacan’s “Mirror Stage” along with Heath, Mulvey, and Metz psychoanalytic analysis of the cinematic code, the author examines how Cassavetes destroys the process of cinematic identification in his first feature film, “Shadows.” Arguing for liberation from coherent reflections of reality, Cassavetes encourages both his characters and viewers to identify with multiples images that defile the structuring totality of the Imago. We have only to understand the mirror stage as an identification, in the full sense that analysis gives to the term: namely, the transformation that takes place in the subject when he assumes an image—whose predestination to this phase-effect is sufficiently indicated by the use, in analytic theory, of the ancient term imago.i Until 1959, John Cassavetes had been better known for his work as an actor than as a director. Due to his apparent “angry-young man” image, he was most often cast in juvenile roles full of anger and intensity such as the psychotic criminal in Andrew L. Stone’s The Night Holds Terror, or a punk in Crime in the Streets, as well as a troubled youngster in a T.V. series Winter Dreams. Crime and Punishment and Edge of the City brought Cassavetes his best recognition as an actor.
