Boulet) NOTE ON THE SPIRITUAL LIFE OF CHILDREN Among children who have kept their innocence of heart and who live in the love of Christ, experience testifies that there are always to be found some who outstrip the ordinary ways of the spiritual life and who enjoy a special familiarity with Christ. Such children, who doubtless act under the influence of the Holy Spirit and who are called to a higher spiritual life, need particular help. Children of this age who are specially gifted with grace can be recognized as such without much difficulty, since ordinarily they are not yet capable of so feigning an authentic interior life. The signs of a deeper spiritual life in children are as follows: a knowledge of God and of the mysteries of faith in which simplicity and profundity are joined in a wonderful way; promptitude to make sacrifices, especially when not seen by others; sincerity and truthfulness; a reverent way of speaking about God and Christ; a certain facility in meditating or praying in their own words. These signs ought to be joined to a serious desire of doing good and exercising virtues (obedience, diligence, charity, etc.). Where these signs are found, Directors must see if perhaps a disposition and a vocation to greater progress in the spiritual life is present. These children should in the first place be exhorted to fulfill the program of the Crusade, to do everything out of love for Jesus and as perfectly as they can.

For other uses, see Saint-Sébastien (disambiguation). Saint Sebastian (died c. 288) was an early Christian saint and martyr. He was killed during the Roman em- peror Diocletian's persecution of Christians. He is com- monly depicted in art and literature tied to a post or tree and shot with arrows. Despite this being the most com- mon artistic depiction of Sebastian, he was, according to legend, rescued and healed by Irene of Rome. Shortly af- terwards he criticized Diocletian in person and as a result was clubbed to death.[1] He is venerated in the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. The details of Saint Sebastian’s martyrdom were first spoken of by 4th-century bishop Ambrose of Milan (Saint Ambrose), in his sermon (number 22) on Psalm 118. Ambrose stated that Sebastian came from Milan and that he was already venerated there at that time. Translating self psychological theories about ritual experience into accessible language, designed for those who wish to enrich their liturgical and spiritual life with psychological insight, is the next step. Self psychology retrieves psychoanalysis for fruitful and chal­ lenging insights into religious ritual experience. For the dialogue between psychoanalysts and ritualists to continue, self psycholo­ gists must be willing to don ritual masks in many religious rites in order to see and hear the world empathically as the worshipers in different traditions do. The self psychologist must be willing to join the ritual dance, knowing that one's partners in the dance become at deep levels extensions of one's self, even the self of the psychologist, as the dance unfolds in celebratory story.     THE SAINTS OF EPILEPSY by EDWARD L. MURPHY E PILEPSY, at least in its grand mal variety, presents so dramatic and, to the lay observer, so terrifying a spectacle that it is not strange that its victims readily resorted to supernatural aid for alleviation. Unlike so many other diseases it offers no external signs ofits presence and the horrifying suddenness with which apparently healthy and normal people could be transformed into writhing convulsives must have gone a long way in suggesting that the syndrome resulted from visitations of God or from His temporary defeat by the powers of evil. As we know, the Greeks thought of the disease as a divine intervention in the life of man, although the critical voice of Hippocrates had announced that it was no more divine than any other ailment. In early Christian times, and especially in the Middle Ages, the Devil and his attendant minor fiends came to play a very important role in religious concepts. It has been well said that the people of the Middle Ages loved God but feared the Devil. They had good reasons for their fear, for had not the Malleus Maleficarum, an authorative text- book for the professional witch-hunter, declared 'there is no infirmity, not even leprosy or epilepsy, which cannot be caused by witches, with God's permission'. Certainly many saints especially famed for their prowess over the powers of darkness were also invoked for the cure of epilepsy. It is to be remembered that the Church has always taught that saints cannot by their own powers work miracles or cure disease.

Docentes eos servare omnia quæcumque mandavi vobis.” “Going therefore, teach all nations: baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.” (St. Matthew 28.19-20) While the Martyrology presented is complete, it nevertheless does not present us with great detail concerning the lives of those whose names are forever indited within it, still less the complete circumstances surrounding and leading up to their martyrdom. For greater detail of their lives, the sources now available on the Internet are extensive and we encourage you to explore them.2 As it stands, the Martyrology is eminently suited to a brief daily reflection that will inspire us to greater fervor, even to imitate these conspicuously holy men and women in whatever measure our own state in life affords us through the grace and providence of Almighty God.

Because of the salutary effects derived from the reading of this sacred volume, various Pontiffs have urged its use by those who recite the Office privately.
