Power Consumption Variation Over Activation Functions
POWER CONSUMPTION VARIATION OVER ACTIVATION FUNCTIONS Leon Derczynski Department of Computer Science IT University of Copenhagen 2300 Denmark [email protected] ABSTRACT The power machine learning models consume when making predictions can be affected by a model’s architecture. This paper presents various estimates of power consumption for a range of different activation functions, a core factor in neural network model architecture design. Substantial differences in hardware perfor- mance exist between activation functions. This difference informs how power consumption in machine learning models can be reduced. 1 INTRODUCTION The field of deep neural networks has reported strong progress in many problem areas, including natural language processing (NLP), image recognition, and game playing. Many of the advances in these areas have been the fruit of using larger and thus more computationally demanding neural networks. Amodei & Hernandez (2018) find that the cost of training doubled every few months be- tween the releases of AlexNet (Krizhevsky et al., 2012) and AlphaZero Silver et al. (2018). In NLP, power consumption has also risen: Strubell et al. (2019) determine the carbon footprint of a con- temporary machine translation architecure search to be in the order of hundreds of intercontinental flights, for models that offer only marginal performance improvement. This paper examines activation functions, a core part of neural networks. The activation function is the non-linearity at the core of each network node. It is applied over the input and bias parameters at a given node for each inference that a model makes. This makes for a potentially large num- ber of computation being required to make predictions, predicated on network structure and size. -

Note: the ITU‐T JRG‐MMQA meeting is held coincident with VQEG during the Multimedia and Hybrid sessions. VQEG Minutes from Monday 25 January 2010, Boulder Thanks to Filippo Speranza (CRC) for taking notes. Meeting starts at 9:15am. FS is designated as the note taker. Participant’s introductions. MP discusses meeting logistics: hours, restaurants, etc. Updates on Projects Group status work. 1) Independent Lab Group (ILG). KB clarifies that most of the ILG work has been in the HDTV test. Most of the subjective tests have been completed (the Acreo one still in progress); video test material has been distributed. 2) Multimedia2 CS notes that this multimedia test includes audio and video. In previous meeting a discussion was started regarding the methodology to be used. The plan in this meeting is to further clarify the method and define who’s doing what. 3) HDTV MP notes that all models were submitted. Most of the subjective data are now available; and some preliminary statistical analysis has been done by NTIA. 4) Hybrid – Perceptual/Bitstream CL notes that at the last meeting a group was created to define the `work system`. Two possible systems were posted by CL but no feedback has been provided. CL hopes that such feedback will be available in this meeting. 5) Tools and Subjective Labs Setup Group YD some tools were created for the Joint Effort Group (JEG) project. The tools are in the public ftp related to the JEG. -

With one picture, the first one sees it as spots on a giraffe. The second one sees it as eyes and a nose when you turn it around at 90 degrees. The third one sees it as a close-up of Swiss cheese. The fourth one sees it as two balloons playing catch. It all depends on how you look at it. The four LeVars look at a couple more eye riddles. Many people see many things in different ways. Besides having a unique way of seeing things, people's other senses are unique too. LeVar loves coming Arthurs Eyes the farmer's bazaar because he gets surrounded by all kinds of sights, smells, and textures. He challenges the viewers' eyes at seeing Arthurs Eyes of certain fruits and vegetables. The things the viewers see are viewed through a special camera lens. Some people use special lenses to see things, especially when they can't see well. LeVar explains, "I wear glasses, and sometimes I wear contact lenses. A different color blindness, unlike with your eyes, has something to do with your mind. It has nothing to do with what you see, but how you see it. LeVar has a flipbook he made himself. The picture changes each time you turn a page. Flipping the pages faster looks like a moving film. -

Saint Sebastian
Educating the Youth to Live the Mass Experts from the Manual of the Eucharistic Crusade of the Apostleship of Prayer Published in 1962 by the Central Office of the Eucharistic Crusade, Rome (Edited by Fr. Boulet) NOTE ON THE SPIRITUAL LIFE OF CHILDREN Among children who have kept their innocence of heart and who live in the love of Christ, experience testifies that there are always to be found some who outstrip the ordinary ways of the spiritual life and who enjoy a special familiarity with Christ. Such children, who doubtless act under the influence of the Holy Spirit and who are called to a higher spiritual life, need particular help. Children of this age who are specially gifted with grace can be recognized as such without much difficulty, since ordinarily they are not yet capable of so feigning an authentic interior life. The signs of a deeper spiritual life in children are as follows: a knowledge of God and of the mysteries of faith in which simplicity and profundity are joined in a wonderful way; promptitude to make sacrifices, especially when not seen by others; sincerity and truthfulness; a reverent way of speaking about God and Christ; a certain facility in meditating or praying in their own words. These signs ought to be joined to a serious desire of doing good and exercising virtues (obedience, diligence, charity, etc.). Where these signs are found, Directors must see if perhaps a disposition and a vocation to greater progress in the spiritual life is present. These children should in the first place be exhorted to fulfill the program of the Crusade, to do everything out of love for Jesus and as perfectly as they can. -
