It lists former Fellows from the foundation of the Society in 1783 to October 2002. Most are deceased Fellows up to and including the list given in the RSE Directory 2003 (Session 2002-3) but some former Fellows who left the Society by resignation or were removed from the roll are still living. HISTORY OF THE PROJECT Information on the Fellowship has been kept by the Society in many ways – unpublished sources include Council and Committee Minutes, Card Indices, and correspondence; published sources such as Transactions, Proceedings, Year Books, Billets, Candidates Lists, etc. All have been examined by the compilers, who have found the Minutes, particularly Committee Minutes, to be of variable quality, and it is to be regretted that the Society’s holdings of published billets and candidates lists are incomplete. The late Professor Neil Campbell prepared from these sources a loose-leaf list of some 1500 Ordinary Fellows elected during the Society’s first hundred years. He listed name and forenames, title where applicable and national honours, profession or discipline, position held, some information on membership of the other societies, dates of birth, election to the Society and death or resignation from the Society and reference to a printed biography. -
Sonic, Infrasonic, and Ultrasonic Frequencies
SONIC, INFRASONIC, AND ULTRASONIC FREQUENCIES: The Utilisation of Waveforms as Weapons, Apparatus for Psychological Manipulation, and as Instruments of Physiological Influence by Industrial, Entertainment, and Military Organisations. TOBY HEYS A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Liverpool John Moores University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy March 2011 1 ABSTRACT This study is a trans-disciplinary and trans-historical investigation into civilian and battlefield contexts in which speaker systems have been utilised by the military-industrial and military-entertainment complexes to apply pressure to mass social groupings and the individuated body. Drawing on authors such as historian/sociologist Michel Foucault, economist Jacques Attali, philosopher Michel Serres, political geographer/urban planner Edward Soja, musician/sonic theorist Steve Goodman, and cultural theorist/urbanist Paul Virilio, this study engages a wide range of texts to orchestrate its arguments. Conducting new strains of viral theory that resonate with architectural, neurological, and political significance, this research provides new and original analysis about the composition of waveformed geography. Ultimately, this study listens to the ways in which the past and current utilisation of sonic, infrasonic, and ultrasonic frequencies as weapons, apparatus for psychological manipulation, and instruments of physiological influence, by industrial, civilian, entertainment, and military organisations, predict future techniques of socio spatialised organisation. In chapter one it is argued that since the inception of wired radio speaker systems into U.S. industrial factories in 1922, the development of sonic strategies based primarily on the scoring of architectonic spatiality, cycles of repetition, and the enveloping dynamics of surround sound can be traced to the sonic torture occurring in Guantanamo Bay during the first decade of the twenty-first century. -

Use these pre- and post-visit activities to teach your students about progressive figures in 19th-century Montréal and to hone their critical thinking skills with respect to progress in history. BEFORE YOUR VISIT ACTIVITY 1 Discovering Montréal’s key 19th-century figures When they visit Pointe-à-Callière, your students will take part in a role-playing game involving key figures from 19th-century Montréal. This pre-visit activity will prepare them for this by teaching them about the people who paved the way for modern-day Montréal. Women Pilots?
There is a lot on this site and others about the role of Gander in the transfer of bombers from the United States to Britain in World War ll. In our mind’s eye, we can clearly see the young men - and some much older – sitting bravely in their cockpits in the evening light as the props start to turn and the first puff of smoke comes out the cylinders of the mighty engines. A last-minute cockpit check, throttles full forward and another bomber races down those reassuringly long Gander runways as they fly out, with little to guide and protect them on the way, over 2000 miles of empty ocean. All these men, the stuff of heroes! But were there no women who ferried a bomber across the Atlantic? Scholarly and military-related sources seemed unanimous that it was an all-male operation and that women were definitely not welcome - but I wanted to find out for sure. My interest for this question was stirred up even more by a photo I found and bought through an Internet search concerning a well known American pilot who may have done it – but the story was far from certain, especially after finding out that she had doctored her own autobiography! But before going any further, a few definitions: - ATA : the Air Transport Auxiliary was a British World War II civilian organization that basically ferried new, repaired and damaged military aircraft between UK factories, assembly plants, transatlantic delivery points and active service squadrons and airfields. It also flew service personnel on urgent duty and performed air ambulance work. -

BLACK RACIALIZATION AND RESISTANCE AT AN ELITE UNIVERSITY rosalind hampton BLACK RACIALIZATION AND RESISTANCE AT AN ELITE UNIVERSITY The presence and experiences of Black people at elite universities have been largely underrepresented or erased from institutional histories. In Black Racialization and Resistance at an Elite University, rosalind hampton documents narratives that span half a century and that reflect differ- ences in class, gender, and national identifications among Black schol- ars. By mapping Black people’s experiences of studying and teaching at McGill University, hampton reveals how the “whiteness” of the uni- versity both includes and exceeds the racial identities of students and professors. The study highlights the specific functions of Blackness and of anti-Blackness within society in general and within the institution of higher education in particular, demonstrating how structures and prac- tices of the university reproduce interlocking systems of oppression that uphold racial capitalism, reproduce colonial relations, and pro- mote settler nationalism. Stahnisch (Guest Editor)1 Abstract: The processes of long-term migration of physicians and scholars affect both the academic migrants and their receiving environments in often dramatic ways. On the one side, their encounter confronts two different knowledge traditions and personal values. On the other side, migrating scientists and academics are also confronted with foreign institutional, political, economic, and cultural frameworks when trying to establish their own ways of professional knowledge and cultural adjustments. The twentieth century has been called the century of war and forced migration: it witnessed two devastating World Wars, which led to an exodus of physicians, scientists, and academics. Nazism and Fascism in the 1930s and 1940s, forced thousands of scientists and physicians away from their home institutions based in Central and Eastern Europe.
