This Institution was upgraded as Medical College in 1948. In 1950, to commemorate the Great Freedom Fighter this College was renamed as Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College who was also an alumni of this College. It is amazing, how one small Medical School has turned into one of the Pioneer Colleges of our country with the passage of time. During this long journey of transformation this College has been the ‘origin’ of numerous Medical Professionals who have left their imprints in different fields of Medical Science in our country as well as around the globe. I wish every success for the celebration of 142nd Foundation Day of this prestigious Medical College and hope that this institution will remain incandescent in the History of Medical Education for years to come. It is a great pride to be here to celebrate an occasion when we as an institution can convey our deep reverence to its founders. This college is one of the oldest medical institutions of our country and has cut a special niche in the history of medical education and research. It came into being long back in 1864 into the central hall, which served then as the “Sealdah Market”and converted to Sealdah Municipal Hospital. On 1stDecember, 1873 the vernacular section of the Calcutta Medical College was shifted to this building, making it the first medical institution where the subject medicine was taught in Bengali. Starting with the humble student population of 44 it has grown in leaps and bounds to become an institute imparting medical education to around 1400 students and nursing education to around 400 students. In 1874 it was rechristened as the Campbell Medical School after the name of the then Lieutenant Governor Sir George Campbell. In the Year 1900, The Fraser Ward was built to accommodate the surgical beds and it still continues to do so. On 1st July, 1948, the institution was upgraded to Campbell Medical College, with 105 medical students in the first year class. Finally, on 19th August, 1950 our prestigious institution got its present name to pay tribute to its illustrious alumina, Sir Nilratan Sircar. The lady Elliot Hostel came into being in 1895, helped by the generous donation of Rs. 25,040/- by her highness of Murshidabad Shams – E- Jahan Begam Paradus Mahal Sahiba. This marvellous structure still attracts visitor’s attention. This College can boast of many eminent Physicians, Researchers and Medical Teachers who have worked here at various points of time. I would like to mention a few preeminent names. Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, the ex- Chief Minister of West Bengal taught Anatomy and Materia Medica between 1912 and 1918. Sri U.N. Brahmachari discovered Urea Stibamine in 1921, while working in a cubicle located in the Central Hall that helped in controlling the killer disease Kala-azar. Prof. A.K. Saha did his pioneer work on “dislocation of shoulder joint” here. Prof. A.K. Basu performed the first Cardiac surgery in India in this institution. Sir Kedar Nath Das, teacher of Midwifery in Campbell Medical School, was famous for the Das’s forceps. And how can we ever forget Dr. Subhas Mukhopadhyay , a faculty of the Physiology department of this college and his relentless search for perfecting the technique of in vitro – fertilization. The Academic Building was sanctioned in the year of 1990, which houses some of the pre & para clinical departments, the Principal’s office and Central Library with its ever- growing stock of books, journals, research papers and state of art electronic facilities. Ever since 1873 this institution has been on the path of progress. This institution is regarded as a Prime Medical College of the Country with 1890 indoor beds. The capacity of MBBS students has been raised to 250 in the 2011-2012 Academic Session , the post graduate and post Doctoral courses in 26 disciplines of which 17 broad speciality and 9 super speciality are continuing keeping pace with the time. Various para-medical courses are also regularly being taught. The Nursing Training school was established in 1944 as a wing of this institution .From 2008 onwards BSc Nursing course and MSc nursing has been continuously run successfully. NRS has been progressing by upgrading different departments in the field of training, research and patient care facilities. The following departments and investigation facilities have been added to the huge list of services offered by this institution in the last one year namely SNCU , Paediatric Nephrology , Pet CT , BMT unit, LINAC unit, Central OT Complex and night shelter for patient party. MCH Hub, state of art Mortuary and facilities of Blood Cell Irradiation along with a new Blood Bank are in the pipeline. Older ones are being extended and several new buildings are being built to accommodate the ever-increasing need of the day to provide hostel facility for the increasing number of students, as well as to house the increasing number of departments. Nursing personnel, Medical Officers and Paramedical staff of various districts is being trained by various units like IMNCI, National Nodal Centre in collaboration with Indian Nursing Council and JHPIEGO in areas of Post Partum care and Family Planning. Workshops, Seminars, Scientific sessions, State conferences and CME Programmes are regularly being held for updating medical education. 10th January has been declared as ‘’Medical Education Day. The doctor’s day is celebrated with aplomb. The College administration is indebted to the services rendered by its renowned teachers , in addition to those already mentioned, Prof. Hiralal Saha , Prof. Manas Roy Chowdhury , Prof. Shambhu Nath De , Prof. Bishnu Pada Chatterjee , Prof. Subir Kumar Chatterjee, Prof. Chunilal Mukherjee , Prof. Chitta Shankar Dawn , Prof. Durlav Chandra Dutta , Prof.Samir Biswas , Prof. Saibal Gupta , Prof. Durgapada Bakshi, Prof. Ajit kumar Dutta Gupta, Prof. Motilal Pan,Prof. Bijay Kumar Chakraborty, Prof. Chaitnya Charan Mallik, Prof. Sitesh Chandra Lahiri, Prof. Ajay Kumar Chandra, Prof. Nalini Ranjan Konar,Prof. Baidyanath Chakraborty, Prof. Arun kumar Nandi, Prof. Kshitindra Mohan Guin, Prof. Asok Kumar Bagchi,Prof. Nalinakshya Mukherjee, Prof. G.C. 1. SPEECH AT PUBLIC MEETING, CHICACOLE December 3, 1927 You seem to be dividing all the good things with poor Utkal1. I flattered myself with the assumption that my arrival here is one of the good things, for I was going to devote all the twenty days to seeing the skeletons of Orissa; but as you, the Andhras, are the gatekeepers of Orissa on this side, you have intercepted my march. But I am glad you have anticipated me also. After entering Andhra Desh, I have been doing my business with you and I know God will reward all those unknown people who have been co-operating with me who am a self- appointed representative of Daridranarayana. And here, too, you have been doing the same thing. Last night, several sister came and presented me with a purse. But let me tell you this is not after all my tour in Andhra. I am not going to let you alone so easily as this, nor will Deshabhakta Konda Venkatappayya let me alone, because I have toured in some parts of Ganjam. I am under promise to tour Andhra during the early part of next year, and let me hope what you are doing is only a foretaste of what you are going to do next year. You have faith in true non-co-operation. There is the great drink evil, eating into the vitals of the labouring population. I would like you to non-co-operate with that evil without a single thought and I make a sporting proposal, viz., that those who give up drink habit should divide their savings with me on behalf of Daridranarayan.

The first two chapters deal with change in the structure and organ isation of higher education as Calcutta became a teaching university and Dacca, founded in 1921, emerged from its shadow.
